			'content' => '<p>July 20: The deadline given by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) &nbsp;to meet the paid-up capital requirement for banks and financial institutions (BFIs) has expired with the start of the new fiscal year. &nbsp;However, the central bank has shown some flexibility regarding this issue.</p>

<p>Only five commercial banks have fulfilled the requirement of Rs 8 billion paid-up capital as of now. Four commercial banks made the announcement well ahead of the deadline. Those banks meeting the criteria set by the central bank within mid-June are Rastriya Banijya Bank, Agriculture Development Bank, Nepal Investment Bank and Global IME Bank. Another commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited, fulfilled the requirement on the eve of the new fiscal year.</p>

<p>Other banks have pledged to fulfill the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares while some banks have said they have been able to meet only half of the paid-up capital requirement.</p>

<p>Records maintained by NRB show that the commercial banks which have so far failed to meet the ceiling set by NRB have paid-up-capital between Rs 4 billion to Rs 6 billion.</p>

<p>Likewise, national level development banks also have not been able to meet the paid-up capital requirement of Rs 2.5 billion set by the central bank. The ceiling for district level development banks has been set at Rs 1.5 billion.</p>

<p>Of late, most of the banks have been busy in merger and acquisition to meet the paid-up capital while some have made commitment to meet the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares.</p>

<p>Garima Bikas Bank, Kailash Bikash Bank and Lumbini Bikas Bank have almost met the paid-up capital requirement.</p>

<p>NRB has said that the banks which have already started the process of meeting the paid-up capital will not be punished until the final audit report is prepared.</p>

<p>NRB had issued a warning a few weeks ago that it would take action against banks and financial institutions (BFIs) if they fail to meet the paid-up capital requirement by mid-July.</p>

<p>NRB&rsquo;s Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Poudel had said the central bank would put a hold on cash dividends, bonus distribution, deposits, loan ceiling and opening of new branches of those BFIs which do not comply with its directives.</p>

<p>NRB had brought a new monetary policy two years ago under which all commercial banks were asked to increase the minimum paid-up capital from Rs 2 billion to Rs 8 billion by mid-July 2017.</p>

<p>However, Poudel has now softened his stance.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The BFIs Act 2073 has provision for final audit six months after the end of a fiscal year. We won&rsquo;t take action against BFIs until we get the final report,&rdquo; said poudel.</p>

<p>The NCC statement further says that the hike in business tax imposed by the KMC will result in rise in inflation and the public will have to bear the burden in the end.</p>

The government had allocated Rs 495 million for the flood victims of the two district in the last fiscal year but Rs 300 million remained unspent.</p>

<p>The amount was sent as relief for 1,652 victims of Banke and 3,579 victims of Bardiya. The amount was released after a long wait but the victims couldn&rsquo;t fully benefit from it as the government decided to distribute the relief amount in installments.</p>

<p>As per the government decision, 3,248 victims of Bardiya and 612 victims of Banke received the first installment worth Rs 50,000 per&nbsp; family, according to engineer Homnath Bhusal of the Urban Development and Building Division Office which distributed the amount.</p>

<p>The government had spent around Rs 193 million in the first installment.</p>

<p>Officials at the urban development office say that they failed to distribute the amount since the government released a large sum unexpectedly and they had trouble in facilitating banking process. They informed that the distribution was also partly affected by the elections.</p>

<p>The government had announced to provide Rs 350,000 to the victim families who did not own any land and Rs 300,000 to those families having land of their own.</p>

<p>More than 13,000 households had been displayed in the two districts due to floods in the Rapti river on August 14, 2014 caused by the Laxmanpur dam and Kalkala embankment built by India.&nbsp;</p>

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) made such announcement on July 18 while unveiling a report on economic and financial status of Nepal in 11 months of FY 2016/17. In the corresponding period of the previous FY, the current account surplus of Nepal was Rs 130 billion. According to the report, sharp rise in import of goods resulted in the deficit last year.</p>

<p>During the review period, net services income registered a surplus. This has led to Rs 74.26 billion in surplus in the overall balance of payment (BoP) of the country. However, the BoP in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 171 billion in surplus.</p>

<p>The BoP remained in surplus during the last fiscal year due to capital transfer of Rs 12.23 billion and direct foreign investment of Rs 12.27 billion, according to NRB.</p>

<p>The current account was in deficit from the start of the last fiscal year but saw some improvement in the last three months. The current account deficit started gradually declining since mid-April. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to NRB, the decline in current account deficit owes much to the income generated by the tourism industry. During that period, the income from tourism industry increased by 41.8 percent as compared to the previous year. The income from tourism sector was Rs 55.2 billion.</p>

<p>In the first 11 months of FY 2016/17, the export of goods increased by 10.4 percent for a total sale of Rs 68.62 billion. In the previous year, the export dropped by 20.1 percent.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the total import increased by 30.9 percent in the review period for a total import of Rs 896.57 billion. Import had decreased by 0.9 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Embassy of India, the government of India has pledged Rs 8,000 million for the construction of &nbsp;Postal Highway.</p>

<p>So far, the construction of two road sections of the Postal Highway including Dhangadhi-Bhajaniya-Satti road and Lamki-Tikapur-Khakraula road has been completed with the Indian government&rsquo;s grant assistance worth Rs 1,020 million, reads the statement. The construction works started on January 19 this year from Dhangadhi.</p>

<p>According to the press statement, the government of India has been supporting infrastructure development of Nepal and has provided financial assistance for construction of various highways, roads, bridges, airports, etc as part of its multi-sectoral and multi-dimensional India-Nepal Economic&nbsp;Cooperation Programme since 1950.</p>

<p>A team of the council reached Darjeeling, Sikim and Siliguri in India this year as well as in the previous year for the promotional activities. Similarly, a team of Western Region Hotel Entrepreneurs Association visited Bihar and different places of Uttar Prasad to launch the campaign.</p>

<p>Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) also headed off to Kolkata and Dhaka, Chatgaon and Cox&rsquo;s bazar of Bangladesh to promote Nepal&rsquo;s tourism, informed Dilli Prasad Gautam, chairman of NATTA. This campaign will contribute to increase the number of tourist, claims Gautam.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Chaliya Pokhara&rdquo; campaign initiated by Western Region Hotel Entrepreneurs Association has also successfully contributed in increasing the number of tourist in Nepal. NATTA has also promoted the campaign in Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Mumbai and Goa.</p>

<p>Various committees related to tourism industry have participated in promoting the tourism development campaign. The campaign is being promoted not only in neighbouring countries but also at various places within Nepal. Due to the campaigns, the tourism industry of Pokhara is slowly returning back to life.</p>

<p>Nepal imported vehicles and petroleum products worth nearly Rs 100 billion from Birgunj Customs Point in the last fiscal year. The import of vehicles and petroleum from this major customs point cost Rs 98.93 billion, which accounted for 54 percent of the total revenue collected from the customs point.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We collected 38 percent of the total revenue from vehicles and 16 percent from petroleum products,&rdquo; said the Birgunj Customs Office chief Sewantak Pokharel.</p>

<p>The total revenue collection from Birgunj customs in the fiscal year 2016/17 was Rs 108.1077 billion.</p>

<p>Vehicles worth Rs 32.57 billion were imported from Birgunj while Petroleum products worth Rs 65.51 billion were imported from the same customs point. Although the total cost of petroleum import was &nbsp;higher than vehicles, the latter contributed more in revenue since the tax for vehicles is much higher than petroleum products.</p>

<p>Among the vehicles, a total of 123,390 &nbsp;motorcycles worth Rs 10.88 &nbsp;billion were imported from the customs point. Likewise, cars, jeeps and vans worth Rs 7.86 billion were imported in the last year.</p>

<p>In the fiscal year 2015/16, vehicles worth Rs 22.22 billion were imported from the customs point. During that period, the country was reeling under blockade imposed by India, which resulted in low import.</p>

<p>In the last fiscal year, petroleum products worth Rs 65.51 billion were imported from Birgunj while the import in the previous year was Rs 79.40 billion. According to Pokharel, the drop in rate was a result of decrease in price of petroleum products but the quantity of import had actually increased in the given period. &nbsp;</p>

			'content' => '<p>July 18: Political stability and investment-friendly environment have encouraged investors to invest in big hotels in Nepal. &nbsp;Around a dozen big hotels with a total investment of Rs 30 billion are currently under construction at various places across the country.</p>

<p>These first-class hotels will be ready by 2020 AD adding 4,000 beds to the hospitality industry of the country. With the completion of the hotels, the total number of beds will reach 46,000. The government has a target to bring 2 million visitors annually to Nepal by 2020. Infrastructure development is vital for that as well.</p>

<p>Most of the under construction hotels being funded by established business families of Nepal and international chain of hotels will range from three stars to five stars.</p>

<p>According to the chairman of Hotel Association of Nepal, Amarman Shakya, investment in hotels is rising of late. Currently, there are 10 five-star hotels, two four-star hotels, 12 three-star hotels, 22 two-star hotels and 18 one-star hotels in Nepal.</p>

<p>Shakya said that the hospitality sector is getting back to business after the devastating earthquake and blockade imposed by India in 2015. However, infrastructure is still not sufficient, according to Shakya.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We haven&rsquo;t been able to bring in more tourists due to lack of infrastructure,&rdquo; said Shakya.</p>

<p>HAN General Secretary Binayak Shah informed that there has been a rise in investment in hotel sector of Nepal but the country needs to host &lsquo;mega events&rsquo; to attract more tourists.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We have lots to sell but we branding is essential for that,&rdquo; said Shah.</p>

<p>According to Shah, unless the fleet of national flag carrier is increased tourist arrival cannot get a boost since the government can use the state-owned airlines to provide discount to bring in more tourists.</p>

<p>Only five commercial banks have fulfilled the requirement of Rs 8 billion paid-up capital as of now. Four commercial banks made the announcement well ahead of the deadline. Those banks meeting the criteria set by the central bank within mid-June are Rastriya Banijya Bank, Agriculture Development Bank, Nepal Investment Bank and Global IME Bank. Another commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited, fulfilled the requirement on the eve of the new fiscal year.</p>

<p>Other banks have pledged to fulfill the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares while some banks have said they have been able to meet only half of the paid-up capital requirement.</p>

<p>Records maintained by NRB show that the commercial banks which have so far failed to meet the ceiling set by NRB have paid-up-capital between Rs 4 billion to Rs 6 billion.</p>

<p>Likewise, national level development banks also have not been able to meet the paid-up capital requirement of Rs 2.5 billion set by the central bank. The ceiling for district level development banks has been set at Rs 1.5 billion.</p>

<p>Of late, most of the banks have been busy in merger and acquisition to meet the paid-up capital while some have made commitment to meet the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares.</p>

<p>Garima Bikas Bank, Kailash Bikash Bank and Lumbini Bikas Bank have almost met the paid-up capital requirement.</p>

<p>NRB has said that the banks which have already started the process of meeting the paid-up capital will not be punished until the final audit report is prepared.</p>

<p>NRB had issued a warning a few weeks ago that it would take action against banks and financial institutions (BFIs) if they fail to meet the paid-up capital requirement by mid-July.</p>

<p>NRB&rsquo;s Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Poudel had said the central bank would put a hold on cash dividends, bonus distribution, deposits, loan ceiling and opening of new branches of those BFIs which do not comply with its directives.</p>

<p>NRB had brought a new monetary policy two years ago under which all commercial banks were asked to increase the minimum paid-up capital from Rs 2 billion to Rs 8 billion by mid-July 2017.</p>

<p>However, Poudel has now softened his stance.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The BFIs Act 2073 has provision for final audit six months after the end of a fiscal year. We won&rsquo;t take action against BFIs until we get the final report,&rdquo; said poudel.</p>

<p>The amount was sent as relief for 1,652 victims of Banke and 3,579 victims of Bardiya. The amount was released after a long wait but the victims couldn&rsquo;t fully benefit from it as the government decided to distribute the relief amount in installments.</p>

<p>As per the government decision, 3,248 victims of Bardiya and 612 victims of Banke received the first installment worth Rs 50,000 per&nbsp; family, according to engineer Homnath Bhusal of the Urban Development and Building Division Office which distributed the amount.</p>

<p>The government had spent around Rs 193 million in the first installment.</p>

<p>Officials at the urban development office say that they failed to distribute the amount since the government released a large sum unexpectedly and they had trouble in facilitating banking process. They informed that the distribution was also partly affected by the elections.</p>

<p>The government had announced to provide Rs 350,000 to the victim families who did not own any land and Rs 300,000 to those families having land of their own.</p>

<p>More than 13,000 households had been displayed in the two districts due to floods in the Rapti river on August 14, 2014 caused by the Laxmanpur dam and Kalkala embankment built by India.&nbsp;</p>

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) made such announcement on July 18 while unveiling a report on economic and financial status of Nepal in 11 months of FY 2016/17. In the corresponding period of the previous FY, the current account surplus of Nepal was Rs 130 billion. According to the report, sharp rise in import of goods resulted in the deficit last year.</p>

<p>During the review period, net services income registered a surplus. This has led to Rs 74.26 billion in surplus in the overall balance of payment (BoP) of the country. However, the BoP in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 171 billion in surplus.</p>

<p>The BoP remained in surplus during the last fiscal year due to capital transfer of Rs 12.23 billion and direct foreign investment of Rs 12.27 billion, according to NRB.</p>

<p>The current account was in deficit from the start of the last fiscal year but saw some improvement in the last three months. The current account deficit started gradually declining since mid-April. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to NRB, the decline in current account deficit owes much to the income generated by the tourism industry. During that period, the income from tourism industry increased by 41.8 percent as compared to the previous year. The income from tourism sector was Rs 55.2 billion.</p>

<p>In the first 11 months of FY 2016/17, the export of goods increased by 10.4 percent for a total sale of Rs 68.62 billion. In the previous year, the export dropped by 20.1 percent.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the total import increased by 30.9 percent in the review period for a total import of Rs 896.57 billion. Import had decreased by 0.9 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, the construction of two road sections of the Postal Highway including Dhangadhi-Bhajaniya-Satti road and Lamki-Tikapur-Khakraula road has been completed with the Indian government&rsquo;s grant assistance worth Rs 1,020 million, reads the statement. The construction works started on January 19 this year from Dhangadhi.</p>

<p>According to the press statement, the government of India has been supporting infrastructure development of Nepal and has provided financial assistance for construction of various highways, roads, bridges, airports, etc as part of its multi-sectoral and multi-dimensional India-Nepal Economic&nbsp;Cooperation Programme since 1950.</p>

<p>An umbrella organization constituting Pokhara Tourism Council, Western Region Hotel Entrepreneurs Association and NATTA Western Regional Chapter has been promoting tourism in neighbouring countries.</p>

<p>A team of the council reached Darjeeling, Sikim and Siliguri in India this year as well as in the previous year for the promotional activities. Similarly, a team of Western Region Hotel Entrepreneurs Association visited Bihar and different places of Uttar Prasad to launch the campaign.</p>

<p>Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) also headed off to Kolkata and Dhaka, Chatgaon and Cox&rsquo;s bazar of Bangladesh to promote Nepal&rsquo;s tourism, informed Dilli Prasad Gautam, chairman of NATTA. This campaign will contribute to increase the number of tourist, claims Gautam.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Chaliya Pokhara&rdquo; campaign initiated by Western Region Hotel Entrepreneurs Association has also successfully contributed in increasing the number of tourist in Nepal. NATTA has also promoted the campaign in Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Mumbai and Goa.</p>

<p>Various committees related to tourism industry have participated in promoting the tourism development campaign. The campaign is being promoted not only in neighbouring countries but also at various places within Nepal. Due to the campaigns, the tourism industry of Pokhara is slowly returning back to life.</p>

<p>Nepal imported vehicles and petroleum products worth nearly Rs 100 billion from Birgunj Customs Point in the last fiscal year. The import of vehicles and petroleum from this major customs point cost Rs 98.93 billion, which accounted for 54 percent of the total revenue collected from the customs point.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We collected 38 percent of the total revenue from vehicles and 16 percent from petroleum products,&rdquo; said the Birgunj Customs Office chief Sewantak Pokharel.</p>

<p>The total revenue collection from Birgunj customs in the fiscal year 2016/17 was Rs 108.1077 billion.</p>

<p>Vehicles worth Rs 32.57 billion were imported from Birgunj while Petroleum products worth Rs 65.51 billion were imported from the same customs point. Although the total cost of petroleum import was &nbsp;higher than vehicles, the latter contributed more in revenue since the tax for vehicles is much higher than petroleum products.</p>

<p>Among the vehicles, a total of 123,390 &nbsp;motorcycles worth Rs 10.88 &nbsp;billion were imported from the customs point. Likewise, cars, jeeps and vans worth Rs 7.86 billion were imported in the last year.</p>

<p>In the fiscal year 2015/16, vehicles worth Rs 22.22 billion were imported from the customs point. During that period, the country was reeling under blockade imposed by India, which resulted in low import.</p>

<p>In the last fiscal year, petroleum products worth Rs 65.51 billion were imported from Birgunj while the import in the previous year was Rs 79.40 billion. According to Pokharel, the drop in rate was a result of decrease in price of petroleum products but the quantity of import had actually increased in the given period. &nbsp;</p>

<p>These first-class hotels will be ready by 2020 AD adding 4,000 beds to the hospitality industry of the country. With the completion of the hotels, the total number of beds will reach 46,000. The government has a target to bring 2 million visitors annually to Nepal by 2020. Infrastructure development is vital for that as well.</p>

<p>Most of the under construction hotels being funded by established business families of Nepal and international chain of hotels will range from three stars to five stars.</p>

<p>According to the chairman of Hotel Association of Nepal, Amarman Shakya, investment in hotels is rising of late. Currently, there are 10 five-star hotels, two four-star hotels, 12 three-star hotels, 22 two-star hotels and 18 one-star hotels in Nepal.</p>

<p>Shakya said that the hospitality sector is getting back to business after the devastating earthquake and blockade imposed by India in 2015. However, infrastructure is still not sufficient, according to Shakya.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We haven&rsquo;t been able to bring in more tourists due to lack of infrastructure,&rdquo; said Shakya.</p>

<p>HAN General Secretary Binayak Shah informed that there has been a rise in investment in hotel sector of Nepal but the country needs to host &lsquo;mega events&rsquo; to attract more tourists.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We have lots to sell but we branding is essential for that,&rdquo; said Shah.</p>

<p>According to Shah, unless the fleet of national flag carrier is increased tourist arrival cannot get a boost since the government can use the state-owned airlines to provide discount to bring in more tourists.</p>

<p>Only five commercial banks have fulfilled the requirement of Rs 8 billion paid-up capital as of now. Four commercial banks made the announcement well ahead of the deadline. Those banks meeting the criteria set by the central bank within mid-June are Rastriya Banijya Bank, Agriculture Development Bank, Nepal Investment Bank and Global IME Bank. Another commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited, fulfilled the requirement on the eve of the new fiscal year.</p>

<p>Other banks have pledged to fulfill the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares while some banks have said they have been able to meet only half of the paid-up capital requirement.</p>

<p>Records maintained by NRB show that the commercial banks which have so far failed to meet the ceiling set by NRB have paid-up-capital between Rs 4 billion to Rs 6 billion.</p>

<p>Likewise, national level development banks also have not been able to meet the paid-up capital requirement of Rs 2.5 billion set by the central bank. The ceiling for district level development banks has been set at Rs 1.5 billion.</p>

<p>Of late, most of the banks have been busy in merger and acquisition to meet the paid-up capital while some have made commitment to meet the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares.</p>

<p>Garima Bikas Bank, Kailash Bikash Bank and Lumbini Bikas Bank have almost met the paid-up capital requirement.</p>

<p>NRB has said that the banks which have already started the process of meeting the paid-up capital will not be punished until the final audit report is prepared.</p>

<p>NRB had issued a warning a few weeks ago that it would take action against banks and financial institutions (BFIs) if they fail to meet the paid-up capital requirement by mid-July.</p>

<p>NRB&rsquo;s Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Poudel had said the central bank would put a hold on cash dividends, bonus distribution, deposits, loan ceiling and opening of new branches of those BFIs which do not comply with its directives.</p>

<p>NRB had brought a new monetary policy two years ago under which all commercial banks were asked to increase the minimum paid-up capital from Rs 2 billion to Rs 8 billion by mid-July 2017.</p>

<p>However, Poudel has now softened his stance.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The BFIs Act 2073 has provision for final audit six months after the end of a fiscal year. We won&rsquo;t take action against BFIs until we get the final report,&rdquo; said poudel.</p>

<p>The amount was sent as relief for 1,652 victims of Banke and 3,579 victims of Bardiya. The amount was released after a long wait but the victims couldn&rsquo;t fully benefit from it as the government decided to distribute the relief amount in installments.</p>

<p>As per the government decision, 3,248 victims of Bardiya and 612 victims of Banke received the first installment worth Rs 50,000 per&nbsp; family, according to engineer Homnath Bhusal of the Urban Development and Building Division Office which distributed the amount.</p>

<p>The government had spent around Rs 193 million in the first installment.</p>

<p>Officials at the urban development office say that they failed to distribute the amount since the government released a large sum unexpectedly and they had trouble in facilitating banking process. They informed that the distribution was also partly affected by the elections.</p>

<p>The government had announced to provide Rs 350,000 to the victim families who did not own any land and Rs 300,000 to those families having land of their own.</p>

<p>More than 13,000 households had been displayed in the two districts due to floods in the Rapti river on August 14, 2014 caused by the Laxmanpur dam and Kalkala embankment built by India.&nbsp;</p>

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) made such announcement on July 18 while unveiling a report on economic and financial status of Nepal in 11 months of FY 2016/17. In the corresponding period of the previous FY, the current account surplus of Nepal was Rs 130 billion. According to the report, sharp rise in import of goods resulted in the deficit last year.</p>

<p>During the review period, net services income registered a surplus. This has led to Rs 74.26 billion in surplus in the overall balance of payment (BoP) of the country. However, the BoP in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 171 billion in surplus.</p>

<p>The BoP remained in surplus during the last fiscal year due to capital transfer of Rs 12.23 billion and direct foreign investment of Rs 12.27 billion, according to NRB.</p>

<p>The current account was in deficit from the start of the last fiscal year but saw some improvement in the last three months. The current account deficit started gradually declining since mid-April. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to NRB, the decline in current account deficit owes much to the income generated by the tourism industry. During that period, the income from tourism industry increased by 41.8 percent as compared to the previous year. The income from tourism sector was Rs 55.2 billion.</p>

<p>In the first 11 months of FY 2016/17, the export of goods increased by 10.4 percent for a total sale of Rs 68.62 billion. In the previous year, the export dropped by 20.1 percent.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the total import increased by 30.9 percent in the review period for a total import of Rs 896.57 billion. Import had decreased by 0.9 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, the construction of two road sections of the Postal Highway including Dhangadhi-Bhajaniya-Satti road and Lamki-Tikapur-Khakraula road has been completed with the Indian government&rsquo;s grant assistance worth Rs 1,020 million, reads the statement. The construction works started on January 19 this year from Dhangadhi.</p>

<p>According to the press statement, the government of India has been supporting infrastructure development of Nepal and has provided financial assistance for construction of various highways, roads, bridges, airports, etc as part of its multi-sectoral and multi-dimensional India-Nepal Economic&nbsp;Cooperation Programme since 1950.</p>

This campaign will contribute to increase the number of tourist, claims Gautam.</p>

<p>Nepal imported vehicles and petroleum products worth nearly Rs 100 billion from Birgunj Customs Point in the last fiscal year. The import of vehicles and petroleum from this major customs point cost Rs 98.93 billion, which accounted for 54 percent of the total revenue collected from the customs point.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We collected 38 percent of the total revenue from vehicles and 16 percent from petroleum products,&rdquo; said the Birgunj Customs Office chief Sewantak Pokharel.</p>

<p>The total revenue collection from Birgunj customs in the fiscal year 2016/17 was Rs 108.1077 billion.</p>

<p>Vehicles worth Rs 32.57 billion were imported from Birgunj while Petroleum products worth Rs 65.51 billion were imported from the same customs point. Although the total cost of petroleum import was &nbsp;higher than vehicles, the latter contributed more in revenue since the tax for vehicles is much higher than petroleum products.</p>

<p>Among the vehicles, a total of 123,390 &nbsp;motorcycles worth Rs 10.88 &nbsp;billion were imported from the customs point. Likewise, cars, jeeps and vans worth Rs 7.86 billion were imported in the last year.</p>

<p>In the fiscal year 2015/16, vehicles worth Rs 22.22 billion were imported from the customs point. During that period, the country was reeling under blockade imposed by India, which resulted in low import.</p>

<p>In the last fiscal year, petroleum products worth Rs 65.51 billion were imported from Birgunj while the import in the previous year was Rs 79.40 billion. According to Pokharel, the drop in rate was a result of decrease in price of petroleum products but the quantity of import had actually increased in the given period. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Most of the under construction hotels being funded by established business families of Nepal and international chain of hotels will range from three stars to five stars.</p>

<p>According to the chairman of Hotel Association of Nepal, Amarman Shakya, investment in hotels is rising of late. Currently, there are 10 five-star hotels, two four-star hotels, 12 three-star hotels, 22 two-star hotels and 18 one-star hotels in Nepal.</p>

<p>Shakya said that the hospitality sector is getting back to business after the devastating earthquake and blockade imposed by India in 2015. However, infrastructure is still not sufficient, according to Shakya.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We haven&rsquo;t been able to bring in more tourists due to lack of infrastructure,&rdquo; said Shakya.</p>

<p>HAN General Secretary Binayak Shah informed that there has been a rise in investment in hotel sector of Nepal but the country needs to host &lsquo;mega events&rsquo; to attract more tourists.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We have lots to sell but we branding is essential for that,&rdquo; said Shah.</p>

<p>According to Shah, unless the fleet of national flag carrier is increased tourist arrival cannot get a boost since the government can use the state-owned airlines to provide discount to bring in more tourists.</p>

			'content' => '<p>July 20: The deadline given by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) &nbsp;to meet the paid-up capital requirement for banks and financial institutions (BFIs) has expired with the start of the new fiscal year. &nbsp;However, the central bank has shown some flexibility regarding this issue.</p>

<p>Only five commercial banks have fulfilled the requirement of Rs 8 billion paid-up capital as of now. Four commercial banks made the announcement well ahead of the deadline. Those banks meeting the criteria set by the central bank within mid-June are Rastriya Banijya Bank, Agriculture Development Bank, Nepal Investment Bank and Global IME Bank. Another commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited, fulfilled the requirement on the eve of the new fiscal year.</p>

<p>Other banks have pledged to fulfill the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares while some banks have said they have been able to meet only half of the paid-up capital requirement.</p>

<p>Records maintained by NRB show that the commercial banks which have so far failed to meet the ceiling set by NRB have paid-up-capital between Rs 4 billion to Rs 6 billion.</p>

<p>Likewise, national level development banks also have not been able to meet the paid-up capital requirement of Rs 2.5 billion set by the central bank. The ceiling for district level development banks has been set at Rs 1.5 billion.</p>

<p>Of late, most of the banks have been busy in merger and acquisition to meet the paid-up capital while some have made commitment to meet the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares.</p>

<p>Garima Bikas Bank, Kailash Bikash Bank and Lumbini Bikas Bank have almost met the paid-up capital requirement.</p>

<p>NRB has said that the banks which have already started the process of meeting the paid-up capital will not be punished until the final audit report is prepared.</p>

<p>NRB had issued a warning a few weeks ago that it would take action against banks and financial institutions (BFIs) if they fail to meet the paid-up capital requirement by mid-July.</p>

<p>NRB&rsquo;s Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Poudel had said the central bank would put a hold on cash dividends, bonus distribution, deposits, loan ceiling and opening of new branches of those BFIs which do not comply with its directives.</p>

<p>NRB had brought a new monetary policy two years ago under which all commercial banks were asked to increase the minimum paid-up capital from Rs 2 billion to Rs 8 billion by mid-July 2017.</p>

<p>However, Poudel has now softened his stance.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The BFIs Act 2073 has provision for final audit six months after the end of a fiscal year. We won&rsquo;t take action against BFIs until we get the final report,&rdquo; said poudel.</p>

<p>The amount was sent as relief for 1,652 victims of Banke and 3,579 victims of Bardiya. The amount was released after a long wait but the victims couldn&rsquo;t fully benefit from it as the government decided to distribute the relief amount in installments.</p>

<p>As per the government decision, 3,248 victims of Bardiya and 612 victims of Banke received the first installment worth Rs 50,000 per&nbsp; family, according to engineer Homnath Bhusal of the Urban Development and Building Division Office which distributed the amount.</p>

<p>The government had spent around Rs 193 million in the first installment.</p>

<p>Officials at the urban development office say that they failed to distribute the amount since the government released a large sum unexpectedly and they had trouble in facilitating banking process. They informed that the distribution was also partly affected by the elections.</p>

<p>The government had announced to provide Rs 350,000 to the victim families who did not own any land and Rs 300,000 to those families having land of their own.</p>

<p>More than 13,000 households had been displayed in the two districts due to floods in the Rapti river on August 14, 2014 caused by the Laxmanpur dam and Kalkala embankment built by India.&nbsp;</p>

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) made such announcement on July 18 while unveiling a report on economic and financial status of Nepal in 11 months of FY 2016/17. In the corresponding period of the previous FY, the current account surplus of Nepal was Rs 130 billion. According to the report, sharp rise in import of goods resulted in the deficit last year.</p>

<p>During the review period, net services income registered a surplus. This has led to Rs 74.26 billion in surplus in the overall balance of payment (BoP) of the country. However, the BoP in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 171 billion in surplus.</p>

<p>The BoP remained in surplus during the last fiscal year due to capital transfer of Rs 12.23 billion and direct foreign investment of Rs 12.27 billion, according to NRB.</p>

<p>The current account was in deficit from the start of the last fiscal year but saw some improvement in the last three months. The current account deficit started gradually declining since mid-April. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to NRB, the decline in current account deficit owes much to the income generated by the tourism industry. During that period, the income from tourism industry increased by 41.8 percent as compared to the previous year. The income from tourism sector was Rs 55.2 billion.</p>

<p>In the first 11 months of FY 2016/17, the export of goods increased by 10.4 percent for a total sale of Rs 68.62 billion. In the previous year, the export dropped by 20.1 percent.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the total import increased by 30.9 percent in the review period for a total import of Rs 896.57 billion. Import had decreased by 0.9 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, the construction of two road sections of the Postal Highway including Dhangadhi-Bhajaniya-Satti road and Lamki-Tikapur-Khakraula road has been completed with the Indian government&rsquo;s grant assistance worth Rs 1,020 million, reads the statement. The construction works started on January 19 this year from Dhangadhi.</p>

<p>According to the press statement, the government of India has been supporting infrastructure development of Nepal and has provided financial assistance for construction of various highways, roads, bridges, airports, etc as part of its multi-sectoral and multi-dimensional India-Nepal Economic&nbsp;Cooperation Programme since 1950.</p>

<p>Nepal imported vehicles and petroleum products worth nearly Rs 100 billion from Birgunj Customs Point in the last fiscal year. The import of vehicles and petroleum from this major customs point cost Rs 98.93 billion, which accounted for 54 percent of the total revenue collected from the customs point.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We collected 38 percent of the total revenue from vehicles and 16 percent from petroleum products,&rdquo; said the Birgunj Customs Office chief Sewantak Pokharel.</p>

<p>The total revenue collection from Birgunj customs in the fiscal year 2016/17 was Rs 108.1077 billion.</p>

<p>Vehicles worth Rs 32.57 billion were imported from Birgunj while Petroleum products worth Rs 65.51 billion were imported from the same customs point. Although the total cost of petroleum import was &nbsp;higher than vehicles, the latter contributed more in revenue since the tax for vehicles is much higher than petroleum products.</p>

<p>Among the vehicles, a total of 123,390 &nbsp;motorcycles worth Rs 10.88 &nbsp;billion were imported from the customs point. Likewise, cars, jeeps and vans worth Rs 7.86 billion were imported in the last year.</p>

<p>In the fiscal year 2015/16, vehicles worth Rs 22.22 billion were imported from the customs point. During that period, the country was reeling under blockade imposed by India, which resulted in low import.</p>

<p>In the last fiscal year, petroleum products worth Rs 65.51 billion were imported from Birgunj while the import in the previous year was Rs 79.40 billion. According to Pokharel, the drop in rate was a result of decrease in price of petroleum products but the quantity of import had actually increased in the given period. &nbsp;</p>

The world&rsquo;s fast growing airline has announced it will add a number of exciting new destinations to its growing network in 2017/18, including Dublin, Nice, Skopje, Sarajevo and many more, flying passengers on board its modern fleet of 200 aircraft.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A multiple award-winning airline, Qatar Airways was recently named Airline of the Year by the 2017 World Airline Awards, managed by international air transport rating organisation Skytrax.&nbsp;</p>

			'content' => '<p>July 18: Political stability and investment-friendly environment have encouraged investors to invest in big hotels in Nepal. &nbsp;Around a dozen big hotels with a total investment of Rs 30 billion are currently under construction at various places across the country.</p>

<p>These first-class hotels will be ready by 2020 AD adding 4,000 beds to the hospitality industry of the country. With the completion of the hotels, the total number of beds will reach 46,000. The government has a target to bring 2 million visitors annually to Nepal by 2020. Infrastructure development is vital for that as well.</p>

<p>Most of the under construction hotels being funded by established business families of Nepal and international chain of hotels will range from three stars to five stars.</p>

<p>According to the chairman of Hotel Association of Nepal, Amarman Shakya, investment in hotels is rising of late. Currently, there are 10 five-star hotels, two four-star hotels, 12 three-star hotels, 22 two-star hotels and 18 one-star hotels in Nepal.</p>

<p>Shakya said that the hospitality sector is getting back to business after the devastating earthquake and blockade imposed by India in 2015. However, infrastructure is still not sufficient, according to Shakya.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We haven&rsquo;t been able to bring in more tourists due to lack of infrastructure,&rdquo; said Shakya.</p>

<p>HAN General Secretary Binayak Shah informed that there has been a rise in investment in hotel sector of Nepal but the country needs to host &lsquo;mega events&rsquo; to attract more tourists.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We have lots to sell but we branding is essential for that,&rdquo; said Shah.</p>

<p>According to Shah, unless the fleet of national flag carrier is increased tourist arrival cannot get a boost since the government can use the state-owned airlines to provide discount to bring in more tourists.</p>

<p>The municipality plans to distribute allowances to old and helpless citizens in areas like Jutpani and Padampur village through proper banking system while people of Shaktikhor and Siddima, which lack banking facility, will benefit from the mobile banking service. Their main objective will be to encourage agricultural and tourism sector.</p>

<p>The municipality expects to earn Rs 348.850 million from financial transactions and from individual and property tax and other various tax sources. The municipality plans to maintain the waterfalls and rivulets of the area in order to attract tourists.</p>
