<p>During his state visit to Nepal, Vice Premier Wang said that road connectivity was his first priority.</p>

<p>The government is planning to give the responsibility of importing petroleum products from China to National Trading Limited. As of now, the state-owned Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has the monopoly of importing oil in the country.</p>

<p>The government believes that India might interfere if it hands the responsibility of importing oil to NOC. Keeping this in mind, the government is planning to give the responsibility to National Trading, said a highly placed source at the Ministry of Supply.</p>

<p>The source also dismissed rumors that the NOC and National Trading were in the process of merging.</p>

<p>Importing petroleum products from China took the center stage two years ago when India imposed an undeclared economic embargo on Nepal. &nbsp;During the crisis, the Chinese government had provided 130,000 liters of petrol as grant to the government of Nepal.</p>

The JFA is the common framework of the government and development partners to effectively implement the SSDP, according to the European Union&rsquo;s delegation in Nepal.</p>

<p>Issuing a press statement, the EU delegation said that the SSDP is a 7-year sector plan, which is operationalised through a 5-year implementation program that was initiated in July 2016 with the main objective of supporting Nepal&rsquo;s ambition to graduate from the status of Least Developed Country by 2023 by ensuring its citizens&#39; access to quality education.</p>

<p>The total cost of the SSDP has been estimated at around US$ 6.4 billion, with the external assistance being envisioned to cover around 8 per cent of this amount, according to the EU.</p>

<p>The SSDP JFA brings different partners together to support the Government of Nepal to improve equity, quality, efficiency, governance and management of the education sector. The mechanism of pooled funding and expertise is expected to bring down the transaction cost significantly and enhance the impact to progress in the sector.</p>

<p>At a recent meeting called by the Minister for &nbsp;Education Gopal Man Shrestha, JFA partners discussed SSDP implementation.</p>

<p>The EU Ambassador Rensje Teerink highlighted the challenging and exciting context in which the SSDP was developed and is currently being implemented on the backdrop of a profound and historic state restructuring.</p>

<p>&quot;It was an intense and delightful honour for the EU to co-chair together with Finland the education working group during the last twelve months in Nepal at the crucial time, when the SSDP was finalised,&quot; said Teerink, who is soon to move to Bangladesh. &quot;We will strongly stay engaged as an active partner and will continue to extend our support to the government and our dear friends from UNICEF and Norway as new education co-focal points.&quot;</p>

<p>Minister for Education, Gopal Man Shrestha thanked the development partners for the strong support to the sector over the past years and in the conception of the new education sector plan.</p>

<p>&quot;The government recognizes the right to education as a fundamental human right and therefore has and will give priority to this sector. However, in order to reach those most vulnerable and in need of education, more resources will be needed,&quot; said Minister Shrestha. &quot;I am certain that this partnership will go beyond the SSDP timeline to ensure Nepal will meet its commitment to the citizens made with the Sustainable Development Goals.&quot;</p>

<p>At the meeting, the EU and UNICEF handed over the SSDP Joint Financing Arrangement to Minister Shrestha. The JFA represents a combined commitment of the Development Partners of almost US$ 485 million to support implementation of SSDP. In addition to this, the wider Development Partner Group will support the SSDP implementation through non-budget support and technical assistance as well.</p>

<p>According to the EU, the relief assistance is an expression of European solidarity towards people in need around the world. It aims to save lives, prevent and alleviate human suffering, and safeguard the integrity and human dignity of populations affected by natural disasters and man-made crises.</p>

<p>Issuing a press statement on August 25, WFP said that the distributions are going on as the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) warns of more floods in the coming days.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The tragedy has affected 1.7 million people, with nearly 461,000 of them displaced from their homes and in desperate need of assistance,&rdquo; reads the statement.</p>

<p>According to the latest report, WFP said that almost half a million people in the impacted areas are currently food insecure, and 300,000 people have very little access to food and are urgently in need of food assistance.</p>

<p>Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP) supported by WFP&nbsp; made the first assessment of the damage to determine the extent of food insecurity in flood-affected districts within 48 hours after the floods, WFP said in the statement.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Many people whose homes have been washed away were extremely poor already, living in rudimentary shelters and struggling to make ends meet. Families that have lost food stocks have nothing to fall back on,&rdquo; said WFP Representative and Country Director Pippa Bradford. &ldquo;WFP is working around the clock to provide food to the poorest to ensure that they have enough to eat,&rdquo; she further added.</p>

<p>The statement quoted the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) indicating that over 80 percent of land in the Terai has been inundated.</p>

<p>It is expected that the floods will impact the rice and wheat harvests in this area, which is the &lsquo;bread basket&rsquo; of Nepal, thus resulting in food shortages in the coming months.</p>

<p>According to WFP, the area already has high rates of malnutrition, with 14 percent of children aged 6-59 months acutely malnourished. These children, along with pregnant women and nursing mothers, are particularly vulnerable to water-borne diseases and food insecurity after disasters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To prevent malnutrition, WFP, along with the Government of Nepal and its partners, will be providing 200 MT of fortified food to 19,500 pregnant women and nursing mothers and about 27,700 children aged between 6 to 23 months, across 13 flood affected districts of the Terai, the statement said.</p>

<p>WFP has begun distributing two-week rations of rice and yellow split peas to people in Saptari, Bardiya, Banke and Rautahat districts, in coordination with local authorities. An additional 40,000 displaced people in areas of Rautahat where the local markets have been restored, will receive cash to help them buy food.</p>

<p>WFP said it takes food quality and safety extremely seriously.</p>

<p>&ldquo;All of our warehouses comply with international standards and WFP staff regularly inspect the conditions of the food. We have seen no evidence that there are any food quality issues,&rdquo; the statement further said.</p>

<p>A source at the ministry said that the insurance company had requested for 45 days to meet the paid-up capital requirement and the ministry instructed the board to give time as per the need of the companies.</p>

<p>However, the Insurance Board has not yet decided about extending the deadline, according the board&rsquo;s director Chiranjeevi Poudel.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We will hold a meeting and decide after a few days whether to extend the deadline or not,&rdquo; said Poudel.</p>

<p>Addressing the Nepal-India Business Forum on August 23, Rana informed the gathering of Indian businesspersons that the major problem of Nepal&rsquo;s development, the political instability, is being sorted out by Nepal&rsquo;s leaders by institutionalizing the new constitution.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Our government has already successfully conducted two local elections and gearing up for next phase of elections. This has and will further provide the thrust on maintaining the political stability and ending the prolonged transitional period,&rdquo; Rana said during the meeting held in honour of visiting Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p>Rana further said that the government of Nepal and its bureaucratic mechanism have prioritized creating conducive environment for investment and lowering the cost of doing business in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Government has started a second-generation policy reform initiatives and reformed several laws like Industrial Enterprises Act, Company Act, Labour Act, Social Service Act, to name a few and brought new ones like Special Economic Zone, IPR Policy, Mines and Minerals Policy, among others. The much-awaited Foreign Investment Act is also expected to be ratified by the Parliament within a month. This all shows Nepal&rsquo;s willingness to support the private sector led growth,&rdquo; added Rana.</p>

<p>Rana informed the meeting attended by delegates of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ASSOCHAM that the macroeconomic indicators of Nepal have been relatively well despite the country undergoing through a rough phase in the last two decades marked by internal conflict, prolonged political transition and the devastating natural disasters.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Last year, Nepal achieved its highest economic growth of 7.5 percent, the highest in the region. In the last one decade, the per capita income of Nepal has increased significantly thereby increasing the consumption by manifold and making Nepal an attractive market,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>Even though there is a trade imbalance, the balance of payment is satisfactory, said Rana during the speech.</p>

<p>According to Rana, there has been a rise in local investments in sectors like hospitality, manufacturing, and agro processing. There is also a surge of FDI in sectors like hydropower, infrastructure and manufacturing.</p>

<p>Last year, Nepal received a commitment of about 14 billion USD during the Nepal Investment Summit. Recently, the Millennium Challenge Corporation of USA has approved the investment of USD 500 million in Nepal&rsquo;s power and transportation sector, informed Rana adding that this would further encourage FDI in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Nepal, despite its flaws and challenges, is a profitable market. Just ask some of your colleagues from the ITC, Unilever, Dabur, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, among others, who are enjoying a good rate of return in their investments. These are the companies who have been in Nepal for about more than two decades and still doing a good business in Nepal.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rana further informed that the volume of bilateral trade between Indian and Nepal is also increasing every year. However, the growing trade gap is a matter of great concern for Nepal.&ldquo;This is the reason why we seek greater investments from Indian private and public sector, especially in productive sector,&rdquo; she added.</p>

<p>Rana also informed the gathering that FNCCI and CII are jointly organizing Nepal-India Business Summit this year.&ldquo;Taking this opportunity, we would like to invite you all to participate in the summit and support us in enhancing Nepal-India economic cooperation,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The government believes that India might interfere if it hands the responsibility of importing oil to NOC. Keeping this in mind, the government is planning to give the responsibility to National Trading, said a highly placed source at the Ministry of Supply.</p>

<p>The source also dismissed rumors that the NOC and National Trading were in the process of merging.</p>

<p>Importing petroleum products from China took the center stage two years ago when India imposed an undeclared economic embargo on Nepal. &nbsp;During the crisis, the Chinese government had provided 130,000 liters of petrol as grant to the government of Nepal.</p>

<p>Issuing a press statement, the EU delegation said that the SSDP is a 7-year sector plan, which is operationalised through a 5-year implementation program that was initiated in July 2016 with the main objective of supporting Nepal&rsquo;s ambition to graduate from the status of Least Developed Country by 2023 by ensuring its citizens&#39; access to quality education.</p>

<p>The total cost of the SSDP has been estimated at around US$ 6.4 billion, with the external assistance being envisioned to cover around 8 per cent of this amount, according to the EU.</p>

<p>The SSDP JFA brings different partners together to support the Government of Nepal to improve equity, quality, efficiency, governance and management of the education sector. The mechanism of pooled funding and expertise is expected to bring down the transaction cost significantly and enhance the impact to progress in the sector.</p>

<p>At a recent meeting called by the Minister for &nbsp;Education Gopal Man Shrestha, JFA partners discussed SSDP implementation.</p>

<p>The EU Ambassador Rensje Teerink highlighted the challenging and exciting context in which the SSDP was developed and is currently being implemented on the backdrop of a profound and historic state restructuring.</p>

<p>&quot;It was an intense and delightful honour for the EU to co-chair together with Finland the education working group during the last twelve months in Nepal at the crucial time, when the SSDP was finalised,&quot; said Teerink, who is soon to move to Bangladesh. &quot;We will strongly stay engaged as an active partner and will continue to extend our support to the government and our dear friends from UNICEF and Norway as new education co-focal points.&quot;</p>

<p>According to the latest report, WFP said that almost half a million people in the impacted areas are currently food insecure, and 300,000 people have very little access to food and are urgently in need of food assistance.</p>

<p>Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP) supported by WFP&nbsp; made the first assessment of the damage to determine the extent of food insecurity in flood-affected districts within 48 hours after the floods, WFP said in the statement.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Many people whose homes have been washed away were extremely poor already, living in rudimentary shelters and struggling to make ends meet. Families that have lost food stocks have nothing to fall back on,&rdquo; said WFP Representative and Country Director Pippa Bradford. &ldquo;WFP is working around the clock to provide food to the poorest to ensure that they have enough to eat,&rdquo; she further added.</p>

<p>The statement quoted the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) indicating that over 80 percent of land in the Terai has been inundated.</p>

<p>It is expected that the floods will impact the rice and wheat harvests in this area, which is the &lsquo;bread basket&rsquo; of Nepal, thus resulting in food shortages in the coming months.</p>

<p>According to WFP, the area already has high rates of malnutrition, with 14 percent of children aged 6-59 months acutely malnourished. These children, along with pregnant women and nursing mothers, are particularly vulnerable to water-borne diseases and food insecurity after disasters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To prevent malnutrition, WFP, along with the Government of Nepal and its partners, will be providing 200 MT of fortified food to 19,500 pregnant women and nursing mothers and about 27,700 children aged between 6 to 23 months, across 13 flood affected districts of the Terai, the statement said.</p>

<p>WFP has begun distributing two-week rations of rice and yellow split peas to people in Saptari, Bardiya, Banke and Rautahat districts, in coordination with local authorities. An additional 40,000 displaced people in areas of Rautahat where the local markets have been restored, will receive cash to help them buy food.</p>

<p>WFP said it takes food quality and safety extremely seriously.</p>

<p>&ldquo;All of our warehouses comply with international standards and WFP staff regularly inspect the conditions of the food. We have seen no evidence that there are any food quality issues,&rdquo; the statement further said.</p>

<p>However, the Insurance Board has not yet decided about extending the deadline, according the board&rsquo;s director Chiranjeevi Poudel.</p>

<p>Addressing the Nepal-India Business Forum on August 23, Rana informed the gathering of Indian businesspersons that the major problem of Nepal&rsquo;s development, the political instability, is being sorted out by Nepal&rsquo;s leaders by institutionalizing the new constitution.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Our government has already successfully conducted two local elections and gearing up for next phase of elections. This has and will further provide the thrust on maintaining the political stability and ending the prolonged transitional period,&rdquo; Rana said during the meeting held in honour of visiting Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p>Rana further said that the government of Nepal and its bureaucratic mechanism have prioritized creating conducive environment for investment and lowering the cost of doing business in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Government has started a second-generation policy reform initiatives and reformed several laws like Industrial Enterprises Act, Company Act, Labour Act, Social Service Act, to name a few and brought new ones like Special Economic Zone, IPR Policy, Mines and Minerals Policy, among others. The much-awaited Foreign Investment Act is also expected to be ratified by the Parliament within a month. This all shows Nepal&rsquo;s willingness to support the private sector led growth,&rdquo; added Rana.</p>

<p>Rana informed the meeting attended by delegates of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ASSOCHAM that the macroeconomic indicators of Nepal have been relatively well despite the country undergoing through a rough phase in the last two decades marked by internal conflict, prolonged political transition and the devastating natural disasters.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Last year, Nepal achieved its highest economic growth of 7.5 percent, the highest in the region. In the last one decade, the per capita income of Nepal has increased significantly thereby increasing the consumption by manifold and making Nepal an attractive market,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>Even though there is a trade imbalance, the balance of payment is satisfactory, said Rana during the speech.</p>

<p>According to Rana, there has been a rise in local investments in sectors like hospitality, manufacturing, and agro processing. There is also a surge of FDI in sectors like hydropower, infrastructure and manufacturing.</p>

<p>Last year, Nepal received a commitment of about 14 billion USD during the Nepal Investment Summit. Recently, the Millennium Challenge Corporation of USA has approved the investment of USD 500 million in Nepal&rsquo;s power and transportation sector, informed Rana adding that this would further encourage FDI in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Nepal, despite its flaws and challenges, is a profitable market. Just ask some of your colleagues from the ITC, Unilever, Dabur, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, among others, who are enjoying a good rate of return in their investments. These are the companies who have been in Nepal for about more than two decades and still doing a good business in Nepal.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rana further informed that the volume of bilateral trade between Indian and Nepal is also increasing every year. However, the growing trade gap is a matter of great concern for Nepal.&ldquo;This is the reason why we seek greater investments from Indian private and public sector, especially in productive sector,&rdquo; she added.</p>

<p>Rana also informed the gathering that FNCCI and CII are jointly organizing Nepal-India Business Summit this year.&ldquo;Taking this opportunity, we would like to invite you all to participate in the summit and support us in enhancing Nepal-India economic cooperation,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The source also dismissed rumors that the NOC and National Trading were in the process of merging.</p>

<p>Importing petroleum products from China took the center stage two years ago when India imposed an undeclared economic embargo on Nepal. &nbsp;During the crisis, the Chinese government had provided 130,000 liters of petrol as grant to the government of Nepal.</p>

The campaign named &lsquo;Jimmewar Chalak Ma&rsquo; started on August 1 and will run for six months, according to a press statement issued by Syakar Trading.</p>

<p>The campaign is Honda&#39;s effort towards encouraging road discipline, as per its pledge to promote the use of a side light at turns, to use high beam lights only during necessary situations and not to overtake from the left lane.</p>

<p>&quot;Jimmewar Chalak Ma&quot; campaign was previously organized on June 2014 and is still carried out at all Honda showrooms throughout Nepal.</p>

<p>Syakar Trading, which has been distributing Honda motorcycles in Nepal since 1976, has its retail outlets spread all across the nation.</p>

The JFA is the common framework of the government and development partners to effectively implement the SSDP, according to the European Union&rsquo;s delegation in Nepal.</p>

<p>Issuing a press statement, the EU delegation said that the SSDP is a 7-year sector plan, which is operationalised through a 5-year implementation program that was initiated in July 2016 with the main objective of supporting Nepal&rsquo;s ambition to graduate from the status of Least Developed Country by 2023 by ensuring its citizens&#39; access to quality education.</p>

<p>The total cost of the SSDP has been estimated at around US$ 6.4 billion, with the external assistance being envisioned to cover around 8 per cent of this amount, according to the EU.</p>

<p>The SSDP JFA brings different partners together to support the Government of Nepal to improve equity, quality, efficiency, governance and management of the education sector. The mechanism of pooled funding and expertise is expected to bring down the transaction cost significantly and enhance the impact to progress in the sector.</p>

<p>At a recent meeting called by the Minister for &nbsp;Education Gopal Man Shrestha, JFA partners discussed SSDP implementation.</p>

<p>The EU Ambassador Rensje Teerink highlighted the challenging and exciting context in which the SSDP was developed and is currently being implemented on the backdrop of a profound and historic state restructuring.</p>

<p>&quot;It was an intense and delightful honour for the EU to co-chair together with Finland the education working group during the last twelve months in Nepal at the crucial time, when the SSDP was finalised,&quot; said Teerink, who is soon to move to Bangladesh. &quot;We will strongly stay engaged as an active partner and will continue to extend our support to the government and our dear friends from UNICEF and Norway as new education co-focal points.&quot;</p>

<p>Minister for Education, Gopal Man Shrestha thanked the development partners for the strong support to the sector over the past years and in the conception of the new education sector plan.</p>

<p>&quot;The government recognizes the right to education as a fundamental human right and therefore has and will give priority to this sector. However, in order to reach those most vulnerable and in need of education, more resources will be needed,&quot; said Minister Shrestha. &quot;I am certain that this partnership will go beyond the SSDP timeline to ensure Nepal will meet its commitment to the citizens made with the Sustainable Development Goals.&quot;</p>

<p>At the meeting, the EU and UNICEF handed over the SSDP Joint Financing Arrangement to Minister Shrestha. The JFA represents a combined commitment of the Development Partners of almost US$ 485 million to support implementation of SSDP. In addition to this, the wider Development Partner Group will support the SSDP implementation through non-budget support and technical assistance as well.</p>

<p>According to the EU, the relief assistance is an expression of European solidarity towards people in need around the world. It aims to save lives, prevent and alleviate human suffering, and safeguard the integrity and human dignity of populations affected by natural disasters and man-made crises.</p>

<p>Issuing a press statement on August 25, WFP said that the distributions are going on as the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) warns of more floods in the coming days.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The tragedy has affected 1.7 million people, with nearly 461,000 of them displaced from their homes and in desperate need of assistance,&rdquo; reads the statement.</p>

<p>According to the latest report, WFP said that almost half a million people in the impacted areas are currently food insecure, and 300,000 people have very little access to food and are urgently in need of food assistance.</p>

<p>Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP) supported by WFP&nbsp; made the first assessment of the damage to determine the extent of food insecurity in flood-affected districts within 48 hours after the floods, WFP said in the statement.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Many people whose homes have been washed away were extremely poor already, living in rudimentary shelters and struggling to make ends meet. Families that have lost food stocks have nothing to fall back on,&rdquo; said WFP Representative and Country Director Pippa Bradford. &ldquo;WFP is working around the clock to provide food to the poorest to ensure that they have enough to eat,&rdquo; she further added.</p>

<p>The statement quoted the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) indicating that over 80 percent of land in the Terai has been inundated.</p>

<p>It is expected that the floods will impact the rice and wheat harvests in this area, which is the &lsquo;bread basket&rsquo; of Nepal, thus resulting in food shortages in the coming months.</p>

<p>According to WFP, the area already has high rates of malnutrition, with 14 percent of children aged 6-59 months acutely malnourished. These children, along with pregnant women and nursing mothers, are particularly vulnerable to water-borne diseases and food insecurity after disasters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To prevent malnutrition, WFP, along with the Government of Nepal and its partners, will be providing 200 MT of fortified food to 19,500 pregnant women and nursing mothers and about 27,700 children aged between 6 to 23 months, across 13 flood affected districts of the Terai, the statement said.</p>

<p>WFP has begun distributing two-week rations of rice and yellow split peas to people in Saptari, Bardiya, Banke and Rautahat districts, in coordination with local authorities. An additional 40,000 displaced people in areas of Rautahat where the local markets have been restored, will receive cash to help them buy food.</p>

<p>WFP said it takes food quality and safety extremely seriously.</p>

<p>&ldquo;All of our warehouses comply with international standards and WFP staff regularly inspect the conditions of the food. We have seen no evidence that there are any food quality issues,&rdquo; the statement further said.</p>

<p>A source at the ministry said that the insurance company had requested for 45 days to meet the paid-up capital requirement and the ministry instructed the board to give time as per the need of the companies.</p>

<p>However, the Insurance Board has not yet decided about extending the deadline, according the board&rsquo;s director Chiranjeevi Poudel.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We will hold a meeting and decide after a few days whether to extend the deadline or not,&rdquo; said Poudel.</p>

<p>Addressing the Nepal-India Business Forum on August 23, Rana informed the gathering of Indian businesspersons that the major problem of Nepal&rsquo;s development, the political instability, is being sorted out by Nepal&rsquo;s leaders by institutionalizing the new constitution.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Our government has already successfully conducted two local elections and gearing up for next phase of elections. This has and will further provide the thrust on maintaining the political stability and ending the prolonged transitional period,&rdquo; Rana said during the meeting held in honour of visiting Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p>Rana further said that the government of Nepal and its bureaucratic mechanism have prioritized creating conducive environment for investment and lowering the cost of doing business in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Government has started a second-generation policy reform initiatives and reformed several laws like Industrial Enterprises Act, Company Act, Labour Act, Social Service Act, to name a few and brought new ones like Special Economic Zone, IPR Policy, Mines and Minerals Policy, among others. The much-awaited Foreign Investment Act is also expected to be ratified by the Parliament within a month. This all shows Nepal&rsquo;s willingness to support the private sector led growth,&rdquo; added Rana.</p>

<p>Rana informed the meeting attended by delegates of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ASSOCHAM that the macroeconomic indicators of Nepal have been relatively well despite the country undergoing through a rough phase in the last two decades marked by internal conflict, prolonged political transition and the devastating natural disasters.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Last year, Nepal achieved its highest economic growth of 7.5 percent, the highest in the region. In the last one decade, the per capita income of Nepal has increased significantly thereby increasing the consumption by manifold and making Nepal an attractive market,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>Even though there is a trade imbalance, the balance of payment is satisfactory, said Rana during the speech.</p>

<p>According to Rana, there has been a rise in local investments in sectors like hospitality, manufacturing, and agro processing. There is also a surge of FDI in sectors like hydropower, infrastructure and manufacturing.</p>

<p>Last year, Nepal received a commitment of about 14 billion USD during the Nepal Investment Summit. Recently, the Millennium Challenge Corporation of USA has approved the investment of USD 500 million in Nepal&rsquo;s power and transportation sector, informed Rana adding that this would further encourage FDI in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Nepal, despite its flaws and challenges, is a profitable market. Just ask some of your colleagues from the ITC, Unilever, Dabur, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, among others, who are enjoying a good rate of return in their investments. These are the companies who have been in Nepal for about more than two decades and still doing a good business in Nepal.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rana further informed that the volume of bilateral trade between Indian and Nepal is also increasing every year. However, the growing trade gap is a matter of great concern for Nepal.&ldquo;This is the reason why we seek greater investments from Indian private and public sector, especially in productive sector,&rdquo; she added.</p>

<p>Rana also informed the gathering that FNCCI and CII are jointly organizing Nepal-India Business Summit this year.&ldquo;Taking this opportunity, we would like to invite you all to participate in the summit and support us in enhancing Nepal-India economic cooperation,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The government is planning to give the responsibility of importing petroleum products from China to National Trading Limited. As of now, the state-owned Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has the monopoly of importing oil in the country.</p>

<p>The government believes that India might interfere if it hands the responsibility of importing oil to NOC. Keeping this in mind, the government is planning to give the responsibility to National Trading, said a highly placed source at the Ministry of Supply.</p>

<p>The source also dismissed rumors that the NOC and National Trading were in the process of merging.</p>

<p>Importing petroleum products from China took the center stage two years ago when India imposed an undeclared economic embargo on Nepal. &nbsp;During the crisis, the Chinese government had provided 130,000 liters of petrol as grant to the government of Nepal.</p>

<p>Issuing a press statement, the EU delegation said that the SSDP is a 7-year sector plan, which is operationalised through a 5-year implementation program that was initiated in July 2016 with the main objective of supporting Nepal&rsquo;s ambition to graduate from the status of Least Developed Country by 2023 by ensuring its citizens&#39; access to quality education.</p>

<p>The total cost of the SSDP has been estimated at around US$ 6.4 billion, with the external assistance being envisioned to cover around 8 per cent of this amount, according to the EU.</p>

<p>The SSDP JFA brings different partners together to support the Government of Nepal to improve equity, quality, efficiency, governance and management of the education sector. The mechanism of pooled funding and expertise is expected to bring down the transaction cost significantly and enhance the impact to progress in the sector.</p>

<p>At a recent meeting called by the Minister for &nbsp;Education Gopal Man Shrestha, JFA partners discussed SSDP implementation.</p>

<p>The EU Ambassador Rensje Teerink highlighted the challenging and exciting context in which the SSDP was developed and is currently being implemented on the backdrop of a profound and historic state restructuring.</p>

<p>&quot;It was an intense and delightful honour for the EU to co-chair together with Finland the education working group during the last twelve months in Nepal at the crucial time, when the SSDP was finalised,&quot; said Teerink, who is soon to move to Bangladesh. &quot;We will strongly stay engaged as an active partner and will continue to extend our support to the government and our dear friends from UNICEF and Norway as new education co-focal points.&quot;</p>

<p>Minister for Education, Gopal Man Shrestha thanked the development partners for the strong support to the sector over the past years and in the conception of the new education sector plan.</p>

<p>Issuing a press statement on August 25, WFP said that the distributions are going on as the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) warns of more floods in the coming days.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The tragedy has affected 1.7 million people, with nearly 461,000 of them displaced from their homes and in desperate need of assistance,&rdquo; reads the statement.</p>

<p>According to the latest report, WFP said that almost half a million people in the impacted areas are currently food insecure, and 300,000 people have very little access to food and are urgently in need of food assistance.</p>

<p>Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP) supported by WFP&nbsp; made the first assessment of the damage to determine the extent of food insecurity in flood-affected districts within 48 hours after the floods, WFP said in the statement.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Many people whose homes have been washed away were extremely poor already, living in rudimentary shelters and struggling to make ends meet. Families that have lost food stocks have nothing to fall back on,&rdquo; said WFP Representative and Country Director Pippa Bradford. &ldquo;WFP is working around the clock to provide food to the poorest to ensure that they have enough to eat,&rdquo; she further added.</p>

<p>The statement quoted the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) indicating that over 80 percent of land in the Terai has been inundated.</p>

<p>It is expected that the floods will impact the rice and wheat harvests in this area, which is the &lsquo;bread basket&rsquo; of Nepal, thus resulting in food shortages in the coming months.</p>

<p>According to WFP, the area already has high rates of malnutrition, with 14 percent of children aged 6-59 months acutely malnourished. These children, along with pregnant women and nursing mothers, are particularly vulnerable to water-borne diseases and food insecurity after disasters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To prevent malnutrition, WFP, along with the Government of Nepal and its partners, will be providing 200 MT of fortified food to 19,500 pregnant women and nursing mothers and about 27,700 children aged between 6 to 23 months, across 13 flood affected districts of the Terai, the statement said.</p>

<p>WFP has begun distributing two-week rations of rice and yellow split peas to people in Saptari, Bardiya, Banke and Rautahat districts, in coordination with local authorities. An additional 40,000 displaced people in areas of Rautahat where the local markets have been restored, will receive cash to help them buy food.</p>

<p>WFP said it takes food quality and safety extremely seriously.</p>

<p>&ldquo;All of our warehouses comply with international standards and WFP staff regularly inspect the conditions of the food. We have seen no evidence that there are any food quality issues,&rdquo; the statement further said.</p>

<p>August 25: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) President Bhavani Rana urged Indian entrepreneurs to increase their investment in Nepal, saying that the country was moving toward political stability after holding two phases of local elections.</p>

<p>Addressing the Nepal-India Business Forum on August 23, Rana informed the gathering of Indian businesspersons that the major problem of Nepal&rsquo;s development, the political instability, is being sorted out by Nepal&rsquo;s leaders by institutionalizing the new constitution.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Our government has already successfully conducted two local elections and gearing up for next phase of elections. This has and will further provide the thrust on maintaining the political stability and ending the prolonged transitional period,&rdquo; Rana said during the meeting held in honour of visiting Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p>Rana further said that the government of Nepal and its bureaucratic mechanism have prioritized creating conducive environment for investment and lowering the cost of doing business in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Government has started a second-generation policy reform initiatives and reformed several laws like Industrial Enterprises Act, Company Act, Labour Act, Social Service Act, to name a few and brought new ones like Special Economic Zone, IPR Policy, Mines and Minerals Policy, among others. The much-awaited Foreign Investment Act is also expected to be ratified by the Parliament within a month. This all shows Nepal&rsquo;s willingness to support the private sector led growth,&rdquo; added Rana.</p>

<p>Rana informed the meeting attended by delegates of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ASSOCHAM that the macroeconomic indicators of Nepal have been relatively well despite the country undergoing through a rough phase in the last two decades marked by internal conflict, prolonged political transition and the devastating natural disasters.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Last year, Nepal achieved its highest economic growth of 7.5 percent, the highest in the region. In the last one decade, the per capita income of Nepal has increased significantly thereby increasing the consumption by manifold and making Nepal an attractive market,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>Even though there is a trade imbalance, the balance of payment is satisfactory, said Rana during the speech.</p>

<p>According to Rana, there has been a rise in local investments in sectors like hospitality, manufacturing, and agro processing. There is also a surge of FDI in sectors like hydropower, infrastructure and manufacturing.</p>

<p>Last year, Nepal received a commitment of about 14 billion USD during the Nepal Investment Summit. Recently, the Millennium Challenge Corporation of USA has approved the investment of USD 500 million in Nepal&rsquo;s power and transportation sector, informed Rana adding that this would further encourage FDI in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Nepal, despite its flaws and challenges, is a profitable market. Just ask some of your colleagues from the ITC, Unilever, Dabur, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, among others, who are enjoying a good rate of return in their investments. These are the companies who have been in Nepal for about more than two decades and still doing a good business in Nepal.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rana further informed that the volume of bilateral trade between Indian and Nepal is also increasing every year. However, the growing trade gap is a matter of great concern for Nepal.&ldquo;This is the reason why we seek greater investments from Indian private and public sector, especially in productive sector,&rdquo; she added.</p>

<p>Rana also informed the gathering that FNCCI and CII are jointly organizing Nepal-India Business Summit this year.&ldquo;Taking this opportunity, we would like to invite you all to participate in the summit and support us in enhancing Nepal-India economic cooperation,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p>
