<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">MAN informed that the signed MOU was exchanged between the two organizations at an event held at Taj Mansingh Hotel on August 24 in presence of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">&nbsp;Sushil Bhatta, president of MAN, and Gopal Jiwarajka, president of PHDCCI signed the MOU.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Issuing a press statement, MAN said both of the national organizations work as the two focal points in both the countries in an effort to establish and develop mutual trade relations between their respective members and also enlarge the areas and scope of cooperation.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">&ldquo;This MOU helps to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and business communities,&rdquo; the statement said.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Both parties claim the MOU is a milestone in arranging reciprocal trade and market research missions and make beneficial business contacts as well as activities aimed at promoting mutual trade and relations. They also agreed to collaborate and conduct national-level programs such as training, research, consulting, exchange of faculty and students, staff development, collaborate together in the organisation and participation in exhibitions, trade fairs, symposia, conferences or similar events, and provide appropriate recommendations to the respective governments.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">&ldquo;Both organizations are committed to explore opportunities for the development of medium, small and micro enterprises (MSMEs) by inviting delegates at the conference, visits, observations; help entrepreneurs of both the countries develop relations, networking and business; and invite intellectual and professional members to present a technical paper or participate in the national and international conference organized by both institutions as appropriate in the areas of interest of the both organization.&rdquo;</p>

<p>The importers are at the receiving end because of lack of coordination among the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Department of Customs while importing food and drinks from India.</p>

<p>The importers need to take the permission in advance from the DFTQC to import food. The foreign exchange management department of Nepal Rastra Bank has made it mandatory for the importers to take permission from the DFTQC. But the Department of Customs has be letting in the goods even if the importers don&rsquo;t have permission. As a result, the importers have been unable to make payment as the bank demands the permission granted by the DFTQC.</p>

<p>The importers say that those who reach banks for payment with the customs clearance bill are sent back by the authorities saying that the banks require permission from DFTQC.</p>

<p>The central bank had recently issued a circular on August 10 stating that the importers need to take permission from the DFTQC in advance to import goods from India. Although the central bank has informed about the decision to the commercial banks, the two departments seem to be unaware about new rules.</p>

<p>Birgunj Customs Office Chief Semantak Pokharel said that they have not been informed about the permission in advance from DFTQC to import food to Nepal.&nbsp; As the customs department has not been informed about the new rules, it has been issuing clearance as it used to do before.</p>

<p>There was no human casualties during the flooding as around 600 tourists were promptly taken to safe areas with the help of elephants and tractors, informed the chairman of Regional Hotel Entrepreneurs Association, Suman Ghimire.</p>

<p>Ghimire further said that after evacuating the tourists, the hoteliers joined hands to clean up the mess in a bid to bring the hotels back in operation.</p>

<p>The eastern parts of the district were not much affected by the floods, according to HAN.</p>

<p>HAN&rsquo;s General Secretary Vinayak Shah informed that the hoteliers were working in collaboration with airlines companies to announce attractive packages for promotion of tourism in Chitwan. Hotels in Chitwan have been facing a hard time due to the obstruction of vehicular movement along the Mugling-Narayanghat road section.</p>

<p>At a time when the business was hard hit by transportation woes, the flood caused further damage to the hospitality business, said Shah. As the expansion of Mugling-Narayanghat road section would still take some time, hotel entrepreneurs are looking for other alternative means of transportation, including air travel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Rockstart Impact is a 100-day accelerator program that is focused on developing countries that bridges the gap between entrepreneurs and impact investors. The application for the 2017 batch is open from August 1 to October 5.</p>

<p>Out of all the applicants, 22 companies will be selected for the entrepreneurship programs out of which 10 will be finalized for the Rockstart Program where as the other 12 will be joining Nepal Communitere&rsquo;s I-Cube Program. <p>Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, informed that the government has made it compulsory for 12 kinds of products to get the NS mark.</p>

<p>Those products requiring the NS mark include OPC, PPC and PLC cements and rods; LPG cylinder; LPG valve, LPG regulator; battery; PVC cable and GI wire.</p>

<p>Upadhyay informed that the process to make NS mark compulsory for LPG bottling plants is also underway.</p>

<p>The products meeting the criteria of NS mark cannot be sold in the market without displaying the mark.</p>

<p>Of late, various industries are booming due to the investment-friendly environment. According to the Department of Industry, a total of 7031 industries have been registered till the end of last fiscal year 2016/17. However, they have not given due attention to acquire the NS mark. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, information officer at Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, altogether 212 industries have acquired NS mark for 292 products as of 2016/17.</p>

<p>The bureau had started providing the NS mark since 1990.</p>

<p>The products which meet the criteria set by the bureau can display the NS mark for up to three years. After that, they companies have to renew the license. To obtain the license of NS mark, the companies have to pay annual fee on different heads. They have to provide Rs 20,000 as deposit while the companies requiring NS mark for more than one product have to pay additional charges. The renewal fee is Rs 1000 per year.&nbsp;</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Japanese ambassador to Nepal Masashi Ogawa handed over the relief materials to Home Minister Janardan Sharma at the Humanitarian Staging Area of Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday, August 23.</p>

<p>The first shipment of emergency relief goods that arrived on Wednesday includes 3,000 blankets, 100 plastic sheets, 2,000 sleeping pads, 100 tents &nbsp;and</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">10 water tanks, weighing almost 10.4 tons, reads a press statement issued by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">The statement further said that the relief materials were sent by the Japanese government in response to the damages caused by heavy&nbsp; rainfall since August 11 in the southern parts of Nepal. JICA said the relief supplies provided are worth around 25 million Japanese yen (about NRs 23.4 million).</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">During the occasion, Ogawa extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims of the unfortunate natural disaster and said, &ldquo;The Japanese Government and Japanese citizens have not forgotten the friendship and compassion given to Japan during the great east Japan earthquake in March 2011 and the Kumamoto earthquake in April 2016 by the government and people of Nepal. Likewise, the Japanese Government and JICA are happy to be able to implement emergency assistance ahead of other governments and international organizations, which is an indication of the cordial relationship between our respective governments and citizens.&rdquo;</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">The Government of Japan sincerely hopes that these goods will be delivered promptly to the victims and will someway help in improving the lives of those affected and that restoration work will go ahead steadily in the disaster-affected areas and the victims will be able to go back to their normal and peaceful lives as quickly as possible, reads the statement.</p>

<p>Rice constitutes the major proportion of imported food, informed an official at the center. Besides rice, the import of food grains like maize, wheat, buck wheat, barley, is also growing over the years.</p>

<p>According to the Ministry of Agriculture Development, Nepal produces 10.5 million metric tons of raw food grains like rice, wheat, maize and buck wheat annually. After processing, 5.5 million metric tons of grains are left, according to the ministry.</p>

<p>An official at the ministry said that the current population requires 7.4 million metric tons of food. In this regard, the domestic production is not enough to suffice the demands of the country.</p>

<p>Of late, the trend of consuming rice, especially the long-grain rice, has also contributed in increase in import of rice.</p>

<p>Although the government has given priority to increase in food production, the import of food has been rising instead. The government has been spending a lot in the agriculture sector but has not yielded the expected results, said Agriculture Secretary Uttam Bhattarai.</p>

<p>According to Bhattarai, besides the production woes the lack of proper use and management of food as well as change in food habit have resulted in the country becoming dependent on food like rice, maize and wheat.</p>

The number of BFIs which were in trouble for a long time has been reduced after meeting the criteria set by Nepal Rastra Bank. There were 16 problematic BFIs in the country until a few years ago but that has been reduced to nine at present.</p>

<p>A financial report till mid-July prepared by the central bank has revealed that seven problematic BFIs have overcome their problems. Among them, General Finance and Arun Finance are back in operation. Some other troubled BFIs are either in course of operating under normal circumstances or in the process of merging with other institutions.</p>

<p>Among the nine problematic BFIs, three are in the process of share ownership transfer.</p>

<p>NRB sources informed that the three BFIs opted for share ownership transfer as they are in the process of merger or acquisition. Another BFI, which is also in process of acquisition, has started discussion about share ownership transfer. Cases of two remaining BFIs are sub judice in the court, informed NRB.</p>

<p>The process of acquisition and merger which started during the tenure of Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada as the governor of NRB has not only reduced the number of BFIs but also helped in bringing down the number of problematic BFIs. In addition to that, the mandatory provision of doubling the paid-up capital within two years introduced by the current governor of NRB has expedited the process of acquisition of problematic BFIs. As a result, a total of 170 BFIs have been involved in the merger/acquisition process as of mid-July 2017. Following the merger/acquisition process, the license of 111 BFIs have been scrapped and there are 39 institutions left.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Issuing a press statement, MAN said both of the national organizations work as the two focal points in both the countries in an effort to establish and develop mutual trade relations between their respective members and also enlarge the areas and scope of cooperation.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">&ldquo;This MOU helps to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and business communities,&rdquo; the statement said.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Both parties claim the MOU is a milestone in arranging reciprocal trade and market research missions and make beneficial business contacts as well as activities aimed at promoting mutual trade and relations. They also agreed to collaborate and conduct national-level programs such as training, research, consulting, exchange of faculty and students, staff development, collaborate together in the organisation and participation in exhibitions, trade fairs, symposia, conferences or similar events, and provide appropriate recommendations to the respective governments.</p>

<p>The importers are at the receiving end because of lack of coordination among the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Department of Customs while importing food and drinks from India.</p>

<p>The importers need to take the permission in advance from the DFTQC to import food. The foreign exchange management department of Nepal Rastra Bank has made it mandatory for the importers to take permission from the DFTQC. But the Department of Customs has be letting in the goods even if the importers don&rsquo;t have permission. As a result, the importers have been unable to make payment as the bank demands the permission granted by the DFTQC.</p>

<p>The importers say that those who reach banks for payment with the customs clearance bill are sent back by the authorities saying that the banks require permission from DFTQC.</p>

<p>The central bank had recently issued a circular on August 10 stating that the importers need to take permission from the DFTQC in advance to import goods from India. Although the central bank has informed about the decision to the commercial banks, the two departments seem to be unaware about new rules.</p>

<p>Birgunj Customs Office Chief Semantak Pokharel said that they have not been informed about the permission in advance from DFTQC to import food to Nepal.&nbsp; As the customs department has not been informed about the new rules, it has been issuing clearance as it used to do before.</p>

<p>The eastern parts of the district were not much affected by the floods, according to HAN.</p>

<p>HAN&rsquo;s General Secretary Vinayak Shah informed that the hoteliers were working in collaboration with airlines companies to announce attractive packages for promotion of tourism in Chitwan. Hotels in Chitwan have been facing a hard time due to the obstruction of vehicular movement along the Mugling-Narayanghat road section.</p>

<p>At a time when the business was hard hit by transportation woes, the flood caused further damage to the hospitality business, said Shah. As the expansion of Mugling-Narayanghat road section would still take some time, hotel entrepreneurs are looking for other alternative means of transportation, including air travel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, informed that the government has made it compulsory for 12 kinds of products to get the NS mark.</p>

<p>Those products requiring the NS mark include OPC, PPC and PLC cements and rods; LPG cylinder; LPG valve, LPG regulator; battery; PVC cable and GI wire.</p>

<p>Upadhyay informed that the process to make NS mark compulsory for LPG bottling plants is also underway.</p>

<p>The products meeting the criteria of NS mark cannot be sold in the market without displaying the mark.</p>

<p>Of late, various industries are booming due to the investment-friendly environment. According to the Department of Industry, a total of 7031 industries have been registered till the end of last fiscal year 2016/17. However, they have not given due attention to acquire the NS mark. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, information officer at Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, altogether 212 industries have acquired NS mark for 292 products as of 2016/17.</p>

<p>The bureau had started providing the NS mark since 1990.</p>

<p>The products which meet the criteria set by the bureau can display the NS mark for up to three years. After that, they companies have to renew the license. To obtain the license of NS mark, the companies have to pay annual fee on different heads. They have to provide Rs 20,000 as deposit while the companies requiring NS mark for more than one product have to pay additional charges. The renewal fee is Rs 1000 per year.&nbsp;</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Japanese ambassador to Nepal Masashi Ogawa handed over the relief materials to Home Minister Janardan Sharma at the Humanitarian Staging Area of Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday, August 23.</p>

<p>The first shipment of emergency relief goods that arrived on Wednesday includes 3,000 blankets, 100 plastic sheets, 2,000 sleeping pads, 100 tents &nbsp;and</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">10 water tanks, weighing almost 10.4 tons, reads a press statement issued by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">The statement further said that the relief materials were sent by the Japanese government in response to the damages caused by heavy&nbsp; rainfall since August 11 in the southern parts of Nepal. JICA said the relief supplies provided are worth around 25 million Japanese yen (about NRs 23.4 million).</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">During the occasion, Ogawa extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims of the unfortunate natural disaster and said, &ldquo;The Japanese Government and Japanese citizens have not forgotten the friendship and compassion given to Japan during the great east Japan earthquake in March 2011 and the Kumamoto earthquake in April 2016 by the government and people of Nepal. Likewise, the Japanese Government and JICA are happy to be able to implement emergency assistance ahead of other governments and international organizations, which is an indication of the cordial relationship between our respective governments and citizens.&rdquo;</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">The Government of Japan sincerely hopes that these goods will be delivered promptly to the victims and will someway help in improving the lives of those affected and that restoration work will go ahead steadily in the disaster-affected areas and the victims will be able to go back to their normal and peaceful lives as quickly as possible, reads the statement.</p>

<p>Rice constitutes the major proportion of imported food, informed an official at the center. Besides rice, the import of food grains like maize, wheat, buck wheat, barley, is also growing over the years.</p>

<p>According to the Ministry of Agriculture Development, Nepal produces 10.5 million metric tons of raw food grains like rice, wheat, maize and buck wheat annually. After processing, 5.5 million metric tons of grains are left, according to the ministry.</p>

<p>An official at the ministry said that the current population requires 7.4 million metric tons of food. In this regard, the domestic production is not enough to suffice the demands of the country.</p>

<p>Of late, the trend of consuming rice, especially the long-grain rice, has also contributed in increase in import of rice.</p>

<p>Although the government has given priority to increase in food production, the import of food has been rising instead. The government has been spending a lot in the agriculture sector but has not yielded the expected results, said Agriculture Secretary Uttam Bhattarai.</p>

<p>According to Bhattarai, besides the production woes the lack of proper use and management of food as well as change in food habit have resulted in the country becoming dependent on food like rice, maize and wheat.</p>

The number of BFIs which were in trouble for a long time has been reduced after meeting the criteria set by Nepal Rastra Bank. There were 16 problematic BFIs in the country until a few years ago but that has been reduced to nine at present.</p>

<p>A financial report till mid-July prepared by the central bank has revealed that seven problematic BFIs have overcome their problems. Among them, General Finance and Arun Finance are back in operation. Some other troubled BFIs are either in course of operating under normal circumstances or in the process of merging with other institutions.</p>

<p>Among the nine problematic BFIs, three are in the process of share ownership transfer.</p>

<p>NRB sources informed that the three BFIs opted for share ownership transfer as they are in the process of merger or acquisition. Another BFI, which is also in process of acquisition, has started discussion about share ownership transfer. Cases of two remaining BFIs are sub judice in the court, informed NRB.</p>

<p>The process of acquisition and merger which started during the tenure of Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada as the governor of NRB has not only reduced the number of BFIs but also helped in bringing down the number of problematic BFIs. In addition to that, the mandatory provision of doubling the paid-up capital within two years introduced by the current governor of NRB has expedited the process of acquisition of problematic BFIs. As a result, a total of 170 BFIs have been involved in the merger/acquisition process as of mid-July 2017. Following the merger/acquisition process, the license of 111 BFIs have been scrapped and there are 39 institutions left.</p>

<p>The importers are at the receiving end because of lack of coordination among the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Department of Customs while importing food and drinks from India.</p>

<p>The importers need to take the permission in advance from the DFTQC to import food. The foreign exchange management department of Nepal Rastra Bank has made it mandatory for the importers to take permission from the DFTQC. But the Department of Customs has be letting in the goods even if the importers don&rsquo;t have permission. As a result, the importers have been unable to make payment as the bank demands the permission granted by the DFTQC.</p>

<p>The importers say that those who reach banks for payment with the customs clearance bill are sent back by the authorities saying that the banks require permission from DFTQC.</p>

<p>The central bank had recently issued a circular on August 10 stating that the importers need to take permission from the DFTQC in advance to import goods from India. Although the central bank has informed about the decision to the commercial banks, the two departments seem to be unaware about new rules.</p>

<p>Birgunj Customs Office Chief Semantak Pokharel said that they have not been informed about the permission in advance from DFTQC to import food to Nepal.&nbsp; As the customs department has not been informed about the new rules, it has been issuing clearance as it used to do before.</p>

As the expansion of Mugling-Narayanghat road section would still take some time, hotel entrepreneurs are looking for other alternative means of transportation, including air travel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Rockstart Impact is a 100-day accelerator program that is focused on developing countries that bridges the gap between entrepreneurs and impact investors. The application for the 2017 batch is open from August 1 to October 5.</p>

<p>Out of all the applicants, 22 companies will be selected for the entrepreneurship programs out of which 10 will be finalized for the Rockstart Program where as the other 12 will be joining Nepal Communitere&rsquo;s I-Cube Program. The application for the program is available in Rockstart&rsquo;s website www.rockstart.com/impact/.</p>

<p>Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, informed that the government has made it compulsory for 12 kinds of products to get the NS mark.</p>

<p>Those products requiring the NS mark include OPC, PPC and PLC cements and rods; LPG cylinder; LPG valve, LPG regulator; battery; PVC cable and GI wire.</p>

<p>Upadhyay informed that the process to make NS mark compulsory for LPG bottling plants is also underway.</p>

<p>The products meeting the criteria of NS mark cannot be sold in the market without displaying the mark.</p>

<p>Of late, various industries are booming due to the investment-friendly environment. According to the Department of Industry, a total of 7031 industries have been registered till the end of last fiscal year 2016/17. However, they have not given due attention to acquire the NS mark. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, information officer at Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, altogether 212 industries have acquired NS mark for 292 products as of 2016/17.</p>

<p>The bureau had started providing the NS mark since 1990.</p>

<p>The products which meet the criteria set by the bureau can display the NS mark for up to three years. After that, they companies have to renew the license. To obtain the license of NS mark, the companies have to pay annual fee on different heads. They have to provide Rs 20,000 as deposit while the companies requiring NS mark for more than one product have to pay additional charges. The renewal fee is Rs 1000 per year.&nbsp;</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Japanese ambassador to Nepal Masashi Ogawa handed over the relief materials to Home Minister Janardan Sharma at the Humanitarian Staging Area of Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday, August 23.</p>

<p>The first shipment of emergency relief goods that arrived on Wednesday includes 3,000 blankets, 100 plastic sheets, 2,000 sleeping pads, 100 tents &nbsp;and</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">10 water tanks, weighing almost 10.4 tons, reads a press statement issued by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">The statement further said that the relief materials were sent by the Japanese government in response to the damages caused by heavy&nbsp; rainfall since August 11 in the southern parts of Nepal. JICA said the relief supplies provided are worth around 25 million Japanese yen (about NRs 23.4 million).</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">During the occasion, Ogawa extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims of the unfortunate natural disaster and said, &ldquo;The Japanese Government and Japanese citizens have not forgotten the friendship and compassion given to Japan during the great east Japan earthquake in March 2011 and the Kumamoto earthquake in April 2016 by the government and people of Nepal. Likewise, the Japanese Government and JICA are happy to be able to implement emergency assistance ahead of other governments and international organizations, which is an indication of the cordial relationship between our respective governments and citizens.&rdquo;</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">The Government of Japan sincerely hopes that these goods will be delivered promptly to the victims and will someway help in improving the lives of those affected and that restoration work will go ahead steadily in the disaster-affected areas and the victims will be able to go back to their normal and peaceful lives as quickly as possible, reads the statement.</p>

<p>Rice constitutes the major proportion of imported food, informed an official at the center. Besides rice, the import of food grains like maize, wheat, buck wheat, barley, is also growing over the years.</p>

<p>According to the Ministry of Agriculture Development, Nepal produces 10.5 million metric tons of raw food grains like rice, wheat, maize and buck wheat annually. After processing, 5.5 million metric tons of grains are left, according to the ministry.</p>

<p>An official at the ministry said that the current population requires 7.4 million metric tons of food. In this regard, the domestic production is not enough to suffice the demands of the country.</p>

<p>Of late, the trend of consuming rice, especially the long-grain rice, has also contributed in increase in import of rice.</p>

<p>Although the government has given priority to increase in food production, the import of food has been rising instead. The government has been spending a lot in the agriculture sector but has not yielded the expected results, said Agriculture Secretary Uttam Bhattarai.</p>

<p>According to Bhattarai, besides the production woes the lack of proper use and management of food as well as change in food habit have resulted in the country becoming dependent on food like rice, maize and wheat.</p>

The number of BFIs which were in trouble for a long time has been reduced after meeting the criteria set by Nepal Rastra Bank. There were 16 problematic BFIs in the country until a few years ago but that has been reduced to nine at present.</p>

<p>A financial report till mid-July prepared by the central bank has revealed that seven problematic BFIs have overcome their problems. Among them, General Finance and Arun Finance are back in operation. Some other troubled BFIs are either in course of operating under normal circumstances or in the process of merging with other institutions.</p>

<p>Among the nine problematic BFIs, three are in the process of share ownership transfer.</p>

<p>NRB sources informed that the three BFIs opted for share ownership transfer as they are in the process of merger or acquisition. Another BFI, which is also in process of acquisition, has started discussion about share ownership transfer. Cases of two remaining BFIs are sub judice in the court, informed NRB.</p>

<p>The process of acquisition and merger which started during the tenure of Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada as the governor of NRB has not only reduced the number of BFIs but also helped in bringing down the number of problematic BFIs. In addition to that, the mandatory provision of doubling the paid-up capital within two years introduced by the current governor of NRB has expedited the process of acquisition of problematic BFIs. As a result, a total of 170 BFIs have been involved in the merger/acquisition process as of mid-July 2017. Following the merger/acquisition process, the license of 111 BFIs have been scrapped and there are 39 institutions left.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">&nbsp;Sushil Bhatta, president of MAN, and Gopal Jiwarajka, president of PHDCCI signed the MOU.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Issuing a press statement, MAN said both of the national organizations work as the two focal points in both the countries in an effort to establish and develop mutual trade relations between their respective members and also enlarge the areas and scope of cooperation.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">&ldquo;This MOU helps to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and business communities,&rdquo; the statement said.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Both parties claim the MOU is a milestone in arranging reciprocal trade and market research missions and make beneficial business contacts as well as activities aimed at promoting mutual trade and relations. They also agreed to collaborate and conduct national-level programs such as training, research, consulting, exchange of faculty and students, staff development, collaborate together in the organisation and participation in exhibitions, trade fairs, symposia, conferences or similar events, and provide appropriate recommendations to the respective governments.</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">&ldquo;Both organizations are committed to explore opportunities for the development of medium, small and micro enterprises (MSMEs) by inviting delegates at the conference, visits, observations; help entrepreneurs of both the countries develop relations, networking and business; and invite intellectual and professional members to present a technical paper or participate in the national and international conference organized by both institutions as appropriate in the areas of interest of the both organization.&rdquo;</p>

<p>The importers are at the receiving end because of lack of coordination among the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Department of Customs while importing food and drinks from India.</p>

<p>The importers need to take the permission in advance from the DFTQC to import food. The foreign exchange management department of Nepal Rastra Bank has made it mandatory for the importers to take permission from the DFTQC. But the Department of Customs has be letting in the goods even if the importers don&rsquo;t have permission. As a result, the importers have been unable to make payment as the bank demands the permission granted by the DFTQC.</p>

<p>The importers say that those who reach banks for payment with the customs clearance bill are sent back by the authorities saying that the banks require permission from DFTQC.</p>

<p>The central bank had recently issued a circular on August 10 stating that the importers need to take permission from the DFTQC in advance to import goods from India. Although the central bank has informed about the decision to the commercial banks, the two departments seem to be unaware about new rules.</p>

<p>Birgunj Customs Office Chief Semantak Pokharel said that they have not been informed about the permission in advance from DFTQC to import food to Nepal.&nbsp; As the customs department has not been informed about the new rules, it has been issuing clearance as it used to do before.</p>

<p>HAN&rsquo;s General Secretary Vinayak Shah informed that the hoteliers were working in collaboration with airlines companies to announce attractive packages for promotion of tourism in Chitwan. Hotels in Chitwan have been facing a hard time due to the obstruction of vehicular movement along the Mugling-Narayanghat road section.</p>

<p>At a time when the business was hard hit by transportation woes, the flood caused further damage to the hospitality business, said Shah. As the expansion of Mugling-Narayanghat road section would still take some time, hotel entrepreneurs are looking for other alternative means of transportation, including air travel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Out of all the applicants, 22 companies will be selected for the entrepreneurship programs out of which 10 will be finalized for the Rockstart Program where as the other 12 will be joining Nepal Communitere&rsquo;s I-Cube Program. <p>Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, informed that the government has made it compulsory for 12 kinds of products to get the NS mark.</p>

<p>Those products requiring the NS mark include OPC, PPC and PLC cements and rods; LPG cylinder; LPG valve, LPG regulator; battery; PVC cable and GI wire.</p>

<p>Upadhyay informed that the process to make NS mark compulsory for LPG bottling plants is also underway.</p>

<p>The products meeting the criteria of NS mark cannot be sold in the market without displaying the mark.</p>

<p>Of late, various industries are booming due to the investment-friendly environment. According to the Department of Industry, a total of 7031 industries have been registered till the end of last fiscal year 2016/17. However, they have not given due attention to acquire the NS mark. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, information officer at Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, altogether 212 industries have acquired NS mark for 292 products as of 2016/17.</p>

<p>The bureau had started providing the NS mark since 1990.</p>

<p>The products which meet the criteria set by the bureau can display the NS mark for up to three years. After that, they companies have to renew the license. To obtain the license of NS mark, the companies have to pay annual fee on different heads. They have to provide Rs 20,000 as deposit while the companies requiring NS mark for more than one product have to pay additional charges. The renewal fee is Rs 1000 per year.&nbsp;</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">Japanese ambassador to Nepal Masashi Ogawa handed over the relief materials to Home Minister Janardan Sharma at the Humanitarian Staging Area of Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday, August 23.</p>

<p>The first shipment of emergency relief goods that arrived on Wednesday includes 3,000 blankets, 100 plastic sheets, 2,000 sleeping pads, 100 tents &nbsp;and</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">10 water tanks, weighing almost 10.4 tons, reads a press statement issued by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">The statement further said that the relief materials were sent by the Japanese government in response to the damages caused by heavy&nbsp; rainfall since August 11 in the southern parts of Nepal. JICA said the relief supplies provided are worth around 25 million Japanese yen (about NRs 23.4 million).</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">During the occasion, Ogawa extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims of the unfortunate natural disaster and said, &ldquo;The Japanese Government and Japanese citizens have not forgotten the friendship and compassion given to Japan during the great east Japan earthquake in March 2011 and the Kumamoto earthquake in April 2016 by the government and people of Nepal. Likewise, the Japanese Government and JICA are happy to be able to implement emergency assistance ahead of other governments and international organizations, which is an indication of the cordial relationship between our respective governments and citizens.&rdquo;</p>

<p style="margin-left:5.0pt">The Government of Japan sincerely hopes that these goods will be delivered promptly to the victims and will someway help in improving the lives of those affected and that restoration work will go ahead steadily in the disaster-affected areas and the victims will be able to go back to their normal and peaceful lives as quickly as possible, reads the statement.</p>

<p>Rice constitutes the major proportion of imported food, informed an official at the center. Besides rice, the import of food grains like maize, wheat, buck wheat, barley, is also growing over the years.</p>

<p>According to the Ministry of Agriculture Development, Nepal produces 10.5 million metric tons of raw food grains like rice, wheat, maize and buck wheat annually. After processing, 5.5 million metric tons of grains are left, according to the ministry.</p>

<p>An official at the ministry said that the current population requires 7.4 million metric tons of food. In this regard, the domestic production is not enough to suffice the demands of the country.</p>

<p>Of late, the trend of consuming rice, especially the long-grain rice, has also contributed in increase in import of rice.</p>

<p>Although the government has given priority to increase in food production, the import of food has been rising instead. The government has been spending a lot in the agriculture sector but has not yielded the expected results, said Agriculture Secretary Uttam Bhattarai.</p>

<p>According to Bhattarai, besides the production woes the lack of proper use and management of food as well as change in food habit have resulted in the country becoming dependent on food like rice, maize and wheat.</p>

Some other troubled BFIs are either in course of operating under normal circumstances or in the process of merging with other institutions.</p>

<p>Among the nine problematic BFIs, three are in the process of share ownership transfer.</p>

<p>NRB sources informed that the three BFIs opted for share ownership transfer as they are in the process of merger or acquisition. Another BFI, which is also in process of acquisition, has started discussion about share ownership transfer. Cases of two remaining BFIs are sub judice in the court, informed NRB.</p>

<p>The process of acquisition and merger which started during the tenure of Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada as the governor of NRB has not only reduced the number of BFIs but also helped in bringing down the number of problematic BFIs. In addition to that, the mandatory provision of doubling the paid-up capital within two years introduced by the current governor of NRB has expedited the process of acquisition of problematic BFIs. As a result, a total of 170 BFIs have been involved in the merger/acquisition process as of mid-July 2017. Following the merger/acquisition process, the license of 111 BFIs have been scrapped and there are 39 institutions left.</p>
