This project has been given special focus since a long time as it is considered vital in easing traffic congestion in Kathmandu and Lalitpur. The total length of the corridor is 17.61 kms.

The Bagmati Corridor Road stretches from Gokarneshwar Temple to Balkhu en route Tilganga, Sinamangal, Minbhavan, Shankhamul and Thapathali.

"Only 3.88 kms of the corridor road is yet to be constructed," says Jyoti Kumar Shrestha, director of the project. He said that there is no separate project as such for Bagmati corridor but the roads are being constructed under the Bagmati Area Physical Infrastructure Development Project.

“We have divided the corridor into various sections and the construction is underway in most of the places,” he said.

Out of 1,750 metres of the road section from Gokarneshwar to Guheswari, 1,250 metres has been completed. According to the project, 3,419 kilometres of the road which falls in the area has been completed. Also, 1,391 metres of Sinamangal-Minbhavan road section has also been completed.

However, the construction of Minbhawan-Shankhamul road section of the corridor almost ready. The road section is 6,600 metres long while construction of 6,570 metres has already finished. 1100 metres of Shankamul-Thapathali road section has been completed as per the target. Meanwhile, only 150 metres of Thapathali-Balkhu road section has been completed so far.

The agreement for construction of 2,500 metres Balkhu-Sundarighat road section was signed in 2013. Therefore, the fluctuation in paddy production directly affects the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Agriculture Development, Shankar Sapkota, made such remarks during a function organized by Nepal Agriculture Journalists Association in the capital on Wednesday to mark the 14th National Paddy Day.

Of late, the agriculture sector has been contributing 29.4 percent of the total GDP of the country. According to the ministry, paddy constitutes 20 percent of the total agricultural products of the country.

Deputy Spokesperson Sapkota said that 5.4 million metric tons of paddy is estimated to be produced in the coming fiscal year.

Paddy expert Krishna Devkota said that there has been a decrease in paddy production due to lack of proper irrigation and manure management among various other things.

Out of the total 3 million hectares of arable land in Nepal, paddy production was done on 1.362 million hectares in the fiscal year 2015/2016, says Tilak Chaulagain, a project officer under the Prime Minister’s Modernization Project.

During that period, 4.219 million metric tons of paddy was produced. According to Chaulagain, the amount of paddy produced in the country was less than the total demand of the country by 2 million metric tons. In the fiscal year 2015/16, the production of paddy was 3.15 metric tons per hectare. The country can be self reliant on paddy if the production is increased to 4.5 metric ton per hectare, says Chaulagain.

The project has a target of making the country self reliant on major crops within the next three years. In order to meet the target, the project has already created a super zone in Jhapa in the current fiscal year. Likewise, other five zones have also been set up especially for paddy in Kanchanpur, Kapilbastu, Pyuthan, Bardiya and Sarlahi. The project has also established 24 blocks in various districts for paddy production. He further informed that the project will create another paddy zone in Siraha in the coming fiscal year 2017/2018 with a view to increase production.

Nepal used to export paddy in the past but in the recent years Nepal has turned into importer. The direct effect of demonetization was felt in countries like Nepal and Bhutan that transact in Indian currency. They are now busy analyzing the possible effects of the GST.

Earlier, different taxes imposed by the central and state governments of India had made the price of imported goods from India very high.

With the implementation of the GST, there will be uniform rate in all products. It has also been analysed that the current effect of the GST will be positive. However, there is a negative side of the GST as well, and the first effect of it will be seen in the import of goods to Nepal.

The GST will increase the transportation tax rate by three percent. Due to this, the transportation fare will rise by three percent, say industrialists and traders.

Transportation tax which was 15 percent earlier has reached 18 percent. This is the reason for the increase in transportation fares while importing goods to Nepal.

Likewise, the Nepali import transactions are done in Indian currency. The GST will not accept that kind of transaction as export and only those in USD is considered as export.

Therefore, Nepal will not receive the GST facilities that other countries dealing in USD get.

According to Pashupati Murarka, former president of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), the huge informal trade with India will now come through formal channel.

Meanwhile, Rabi Shankar Sainju, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) said they have written to the Indian government requesting waiver on service tax to give relief to the importers. “We are waiting for the reply,” he said.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5875', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6090', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Indian tourists beat the summer heat in Pokhara', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days.', 'content' => '
June 28: Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days. According to Western Region Hotel Association, Pokhara’s Chairman Bikal Tulachan, Indian tourists basically visit Pokhara to beat the summer heat and to spend their vacation.

“Most of the Indian tourists come to Pokhara to get away from the excessive heat in India,” said Tulachan, adding, “The Indian tourists have increased in comparison to last year.”

Among the Indian tourists, most of them are from the cities of the bordering states.

The presence of Indian tourists in Pokhara was almost nil in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 2015 and during the blockade imposed by India. Tourism entrepreneurs are hopeful that the situation will become better as the inflow of Indian tourists has gradually increased since last year. Most of the tourists in Pokhara at present are Indians.

Indian tourists account for around 40 percent occupancy of Pokhara-based hotels, according to Tulachan. The remaining tourists are Nepalis while the number of foreign tourists other than Indians is negligible.

Before the earthquake, majority of tourists during this season used to be Chinese. But after the quake, Chinese tourists have hardly traveled to Pokhara.

Avia Club’s Manager Rijan Rijal informed that most of the tourists at present are Indians. According to Rijal, around 70 percent of tourists who come for ultralight flights are Indians.

Although the number of Indian tourists visiting pokhara has increased significantly, the overall situation is not satisfactory, says Hotel Landmark’s operator Om Pandey.

“Half of the tourists are Indians. Even a small number of tourists from India, which shares border with Nepal, would significantly boost the tourism industry in Pokhara. Hotel entrepreneurs are active in increasing the number of Indian tourists, for which the Western Region Hotel Association has been launching a special campaign ‘Chaliye Pokhara’ for the last seven years.

This campaign has helped to a great extent in bringing Indian tourists to Pokhara, says the association’s former chairman Biplav Poudel, who operates Hotel Barahi. Poudel believes that Indian tourists have not only helped tourism thrive in Pokhara but have helped in the overall tourism business across Nepal.

Pokhara falls in the priority list of Indian tourists who live in the bordering cities of India as they can drive to Pokhara on their own.
', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5874', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 14 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6089', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Ncell announces new offer', 'sub_title' => 'Attractive gifts everyday under ‘Sabailai Upahar Harek Din Lagataar’ offer', 'summary' => ' The customers will get attractive gifts including bonus talk time, data, bonus SMS every day under the scheme.', 'content' => '
June 28: Ncell has announced attractive gifts every day under ‘Sabailai Upahar Harek Din Lagataar’ offer.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5875', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6090', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Indian tourists beat the summer heat in Pokhara', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days.', 'content' => '

But we still need to do a lot to bring more tourists,” he said.

Indian tourists are considered vital for the hospitality business of Pokhara.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5875', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6090', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Indian tourists beat the summer heat in Pokhara', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days.', 'content' => '

But we still need to do a lot to bring more tourists,” he said.

Indian tourists are considered vital for the hospitality business of Pokhara.

Currently, Nepal spends more than Rs 25 billion to import paddy and rice every year.
', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-29', 'modified' => '2017-06-29', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5880', 'image' => '20170629011931_paddy.jpg', 'article_date' => '2017-06-29 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 8 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6095', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Hydropower Companies Awaiting for Approval to Issue IPOs ', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => ' Thirteen hydropower companies are going to issue their IPOs in the near future.', 'content' => '
June 29: Thirteen hydropower companies are going to issue their IPOs in the near future.

Out of 19 companies which are awaiting the approval for issuance of IPOs and FPOs from SEBON, 13 applicants are from hydropower sector.

Apart from banks and financial institutions (BFIs), applications from hydropower companies asking for approval to issue common shares for capital increment has also increased, claims Niranjaya Ghimire, deputy director of SEBON.

The mandatory provision imposed by the government for hydropower projects to include 10 percent shareholders from among the locals of the affected area has made the sector more attractive for investors.

The companies awaiting approval are Sanjen Jalavidhyut, Rasuwagadhi Hydropower, Ankhukhola Hydropower, Garjyang Upatyaka Hydropower Company, Joshi Hydropower Development, Subham Power, Panchakanya Mai Hydropower, Radhi Bidyut, Laughing Buddha Power, Unique Hydel, Panchakanya Jalabidyut, Nepal Hydro Developer and Nyadi Hydropower Ltd.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-29', 'modified' => '2017-06-29', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5879', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-29 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 9 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6094', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'NRB and Bank of Korea to Prepare Macroeconomic Model for Nepal', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Bank of Korea (BoK) has agreed to provide technical assistance to prepare a macroeconomic model for the economic projection of Nepal by the end of 2017.', 'content' => '
June 28: Bank of Korea (BoK) has agreed to provide technical assistance to prepare a macroeconomic model for the economic projection of Nepal by the end of 2017.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5875', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6090', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Indian tourists beat the summer heat in Pokhara', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days.', 'content' => '

But we still need to do a lot to bring more tourists,” he said.

Indian tourists are considered vital for the hospitality business of Pokhara.
