Together, they opened a small confectionery factory called ‘Laxmi Mithai Bhandar’ in Pokhara in 2030 BS (1974) with an initial investment of NPR 2,000 that included money borrowed from neighbours. Using local knowhow about producing ‘pustakari’, a local sweet item, the two brothers used Indian manual machines to produce chocolates. At the time, their competitors like Nebico and Pashupati Biscuits used advanced German-made machines. Within two years, the brothers upgraded the production line with semi-automatic machines.
The same year, Laxmi Mithai Bhandar moved into the newly opened Pokhara Industrial Zone and was renamed as Jay Ma Laxmi Confectionary Industry which expanded into further units like Suva Laxmi, Maha Laxmi and Mahashakti Chocolate Company. These units produced popular chocolate items like Orange Ball, Diamond, Laxmi Sweets and Rimjhim Ball. In 1986, the two brothers established Jaya Ma and Jaya Confectionaries, which introduced candies like Mango Tart, Lacto Fun and Yo Yo, which were extremely popular brands. Laxmi Group continued with their business expansion with the establishment of Jaya Packaging Industry in 1988 and Jaya Polythene Industry in 1991. After his demise, the lime factory closed down for three years due to financial constraints. After Madhav’s death, his spouse took over the business but it did not function as usual and was then taken over by Ajeya and Arun Sumargi once they were ready to lead the business. As lime was elemental to leather tanning industries, the demand for lime started rising. As it happened, industry owners approached the Sumargi family to resume the operation of Hetauda Lime Industry. Hetauda Lime Industry can be regarded as a key milestone and a game-changer for the Sumargi family whose venture into mining industry is considered amongst the first.
In the early 2000, Ajeya Raj Sumargi was amongst a group of investors in Spice Nepal Pvt Ltd, the stakes of which were later sold. Investment in Spice Nepal that introduced ‘Mero Mobile’ has been a key highlight amongst the several ventures of the business group. In 2004, the Sumargi family ventured into the business of producing mineral water with Himalayan Natural Spring Water Company Pvt Ltd. In 2005, it registered Nepal Satellite Telecom Pvt Ltd to become a telecom operator. In 2006, the family registered Muktishree Pvt Ltd as a parent company with the view of investing in the telecommunication sector but later switched to the idea of bringing its entire investments under the parent company and make investments in other various business activities. Since then, Muktishree Pvt Ltd has established various subsidiary companies in the fields of telecom, energy and cement industry. Nepal Satellite Telecom Pvt Ltd started its operation in 2009 with the brand name ‘Hello Nepal’. Another telecom company Muktishree Telecom was established in 2009. Lately, Muktishree has established Inco Panel, a construction material industry that was introduced post-2015 earthquake. Muktishree also has strong presence in the media sector with Bindabashini Media Pvt Ltd and Radio Thaha Sanchaar. This shift towards the agribusiness sector led to the formation of Nimbus International in 2000. In its initial days, the company imported animal vitamins, vaccines and medicines from US and France-based MNCs. As experience about animal health and nutrition broadened, Nimbus International started a plant producing feed supplements. In 2004, the group established Probiotech Industries, the first pellet feed manufacturing unit in Nepal. The move was a turning point for the business group whose animal feed brand ‘Shakti’ started a gradual takeover of the market and today enjoys tremendous market share in Nepal. Probiotech is also the producer of Byanjan and Sunaulo Kiran edible oil brands which are gradually building their position in the market.
Following the success with animal feed, it was time for the group to expand their footprint into other business activities. National Polyplast, a company that manufactures poly woven fabrics was established in 2000 and was later renamed as Progeochem Industries. The group further expanded into the LPG business by acquiring Samriddhi Gas Udhyog and Nepal Gas.
Today, Nimbus is a leading agri-business company of Nepal that has strongly leveraged its distribution network in expanding the outreach of its products. Using local knowhow about producing ‘pustakari’, a local sweet item, the two brothers used Indian manual machines to produce chocolates.
In 1995, Suva Laxmi, Jay Ma and Laxmi merged into a single entity known as Sujal Foods.
