Ram Lal received advice and support from an Indian jute mill owner Radha Krishna Chamodia to start the mill which inspired other business families to set up industries. His sons Hansraj and Hulaschand took the Golchha Organization to new heights by expanding its business portfolio in various sectors. Golchha Organisation is regarded as the first group in the country to start overseas exports of Nepali products. In 1981, Hulas Steel Industries was jointly established as a Greenfield venture by Golchha Organization and Comcraft of Switzerland. The group in 1988 commenced Him Electronics to produce and supply electrical utilities. Another major business entity of Golchha Organization was started in 1998 as Hansraj Hulaschand and Company (HH Bajaj) to introduce the popular two-wheeler brand Bajaj in Nepal. HH Bajaj which is among the largest trading companies in Nepal is credited for starting a new wave of two-wheeler enthusiasm in the Nepali market by introducing Bajaj Pulsar motorbikes. The stationary business, started by Ram Lal Shrestha, mostly catered to government and semi-government clients. His relationship with such clients proved to be a beneficial leverage to start a business that catered the service of representation and liaisoning to foreign firms giving birth to Inter-Continental Trading Concern in 1975. In the 1970s, ICTC had established Himalayan Brick Factory and electric bulb production plant, but both failed. In 1978, its initials were retained to form ICTC Pvt Ltd with a capital base of Rs 5,000. In the same year, ICTC was engaged in its first project, Lower Marshyangdi Hydropower Project. Today, with its four decades of experience in providing representation and liaisoning service, ICTC boasts of specialisation in providing support to foreign firms entering Nepal.

Since 1991, the group started diversifying into a range of business activities but keeping its focus mainly on five business sectors – services, engineering and construction, energy, consumer products and information and communication services. Within these sectors, the group has presence in business areas such as insurance, beverages, hospitality, hydropower and real estate development, consumer product trading, marketing and distribution, IT, communication, software development and business process outsourcing services.

In 1991, the group established Taragaon Regency Hotels Ltd under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, with investments coming from the government, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the ICTC. The Taragaon Regency is considered among the first PPPs in Nepal that started operating Hyatt Regency Kathmandu in 2000. Three years later, the group promoted Premier Insurance Co, a general insurance company, landing its investment in the insurance sector. The group also has presence in liquor manufacturing through its Highland Distillery. According to Dinesh Lal Shrestha, Highland Distillery is the second largest distillery in Nepal in terms of business turnover and its net profit stood at Rs 430 million in 2016.

Financials

Annual Turnover Rs 1.6 billion in hotel businesses, Rs 1.5 billionin insurance, Rs 3.5 billion in liquor business

Estimated turnover from Solu hydroelectric project once the project starts commercial production is Rs 700 million

Rs 758 millionin 2015 from Prime International (confectionaries, liquor, beer and detergents)

Key Business

Service

Engineering and Construction

Energy

Consumer products

Information and communication services

Joint Venture

Hyatt Regency Kathmandu

Planned Projects

Expansion within Hyatt Regency Kathmandu adding 150 rooms

A 4-star hotel primarily catering to Chinese tourists

International Exhibition Centre with 1,000 car capacity

Taragaon Village, a Boudha-based project with a replica of Thamel

Engagement in government projects including Upper Karnali with India’s GMR and West Seti with China’s Three Gorges

Employment

1,000 people

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-04-12', 'modified' => '2018-04-12', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '7725', 'image' => '20180412104529_Clipboard70.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-04-12 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => false, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '11' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '7943', 'article_category_id' => '217', 'title' => 'IME Group', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Chandra Prasad Dhakal who began his career as a banker at Rastriya Banijya Bank decided to take up a cargo business in 1992 after sensing opportunity in it. The Kansakar’s business quest in India ended in the 1960s when he moved back to Nepal. In 1961, his son Maniharsha Kansakar established Himal Iron and Steel, Nepal’s first iron and steel factory laying the foundations of the Jyoti Group. From the 1960s, the firm moved into the production of cement, textile (spinning mills and yarn processing plants), steel and wires and gas and medicines and delivery of services such as engineering, import-export, logistic solutions, tourism and health care. The group has maintained a strong presence in the two-wheeler industry ever since it established the Syakar Company in 1976 which became the authorised distributor for Honda and later Hero Honda two-wheelers in 1986. Currently, Syakar serves as the authorised distributor and retailer of Honda two and four-wheelers and Philips home appliances while another subsidiary, Nepal General Marketing, serves as the exclusive authorised distributor of Hero bikes.
