'content' => '
Pioneering the manufacturing of construction materials, Panchakanya Group is considered as a force to be reckoned with in the Nepali industrial fraternity. The group is the result of a vision and the ambition of its founder Prem Bahadur Shrestha and the hard work of his sons. A 17 year old Prem Bahadur Shrestha, after rejecting a government job offer, decided to start a business of his own. His first venture was a potato farm in Fikkal of Ilam. However, it could not succeed. Then he came to Jhapa and began trading in rice and other items gradually achieving success. Afterwards he started a partnership business in timber in 2024 BS. With strong support from his brothers, the business turned out to become quite successful.
In 1971, Shrestha established the Panchakanya Rice Mill in Jhapa which is considered as a stepping stone inthe formation ofthe Panchakanya Group. In 1981, he ventured into iron and steel manufacturing by establishing the Panchakanya Iron Industries at Kotihawa, Rupandehi. The primary idea behind starting the company in Rupandehi was to tap the opportunities in the unexplored market for iron and steel construction materials in the western part of Nepal. During the 1980s, Panchakanya Group diversified further by setting up a pipe, wire and a steel manufacturing industry in Bhairahawa. The group then planned to build industrial plants in the Kathmandu Valley.
Today, the group has five plants in the Kathmandu Valley for manufacturing RMC (readymix concrete), stainless steel tanks, aggregates and furniture. In 1994, Panchakanya acquired Nepal Bitumen & Barrel Udhyog, a government owned company established in 1984, under the government’s privatisation programme.
In 2002, Panchakanya Steel became the first company to manufacture TMT steel bars in Nepal. Post-2015 earthquake, Panchakanya started a manufacturing plant for structural galvanized-steel and light gauge steel, which is first such plant in Nepal.
With its innovation in the steel industry, the number of industries under the flag of Panchakanya and its history of being a company with strong business repute, the group has today become a highly admired brand among the Nepalis.

The emergence of the Prabhu brand started after the formation of Prabhu Travels, a travel agency formed in 1990. Devi Prakash Bhattachan, the chairman of the Prabhu Group, is the man behind the group of companies with the brand name Prabhu.
In 2001, the group started Prabhu Finance and Prabhu Investment Company. Prabhu Group rose to prominence after the Prabhu Development Bank (which was upgraded from Prabhu Finance) merged with Kist Bank, Gaurishankar Development Bank and Zenith Finance Ltd to form Prabhu Bank. This was in 2014. So far, eight financial institutions have been merged into Prabhu Bank.
Prabhu Group has since intensified its business expansion. In 2014, Prabhu Technology was established which later became the first company to receive a license from the central bank for mobile payments. In 2015, Prabhu group acquired a 55 percent stake in Muktinath Airlines and transformed it into Prabhu Helicopters. In 2016, Prabhu Group acquired Growmore Merchant Bank and converted it into Prabhu Capital. In late 2017, Prabhu Life Insurance came into existence. The group already has a general insurance company under its wing.
The group has also been undertaking money transfer services through Prabhu Money Transfer since 2002. A Malaysia-based Prabhu Money Transfer was established in 2007 which was acquired by Telenor Group in May 2016. The group also comprises of a US-based financial service providing company, Prabhu Group Inc. which is led by the chairman’s daughter Shikshya Bhattachan.

After one hundred years in trade and business, Saakha Group can be considered as one of the oldest business houses of Nepal. To build on the company’s traditional business activities, Ram Bhakta Saakha sent his son to Mumbai (then known as Bombay) to study business. Upon his return from Mumbai, Ganesh Saakha started importing adhesive glues for industrial use in Nepal and further imported dyes and chemicals. At times, Ganesh Saakha also imported shoes, cloths and umbrellas from China but with the increase in demand for industrial intermediary goods, he decided to establish Nepal Polycal Industries. The establishment of the industry in 2035 BS in Hattisar marked the beginning of Saakhas as a business house in Nepal.
In the 1980s, Saakha Group entered into garment production but the business declined in the mid-2000s and the group had to withdraw from it. In 1983, the group established Nepal Paints Pvt. Ltd. in technical collaboration with a Korean franchise. Later, their Saakha Metal Industries started the production of non-ferrous metal sheets and circles (copper, brass, and aluminium sheets) which are primarily used in the production of utensils. In 1995, Saakha Steel Industries was founded which produced ToR-steel using a Luxemburg-based franchise. 15 years later, the company upgraded its plant to produce TMT bars. Today, it is one of the leading Nepali steel manufacturers. Ganesh Bhakta Saakha believes that his life as an industrialist actually started from 2041 BS onwards after his venture into large scale industries such as Nepal Paint Industries, Saakha Metal Industries and Unisa Polychem Industries.
In 2001, the group bought a 33 percent stake in Chemidrug Industries which is one of the oldest Nepali pharmaceuticals established in the 1970s. Saakha Group is also engaged in the import of automobiles, dyes and chemicals, solar products and prefab houses. Real estate, finance and education are other areas of business where Saakha Group has investments.

The group has now over 30 companies under its umbrella spanning a range of sectors including mining, cement, steel, synthetics, textiles, FMCG, trading and, insurance, capital market, real estate and hospitality. The group’s momentum in manufacturing gained speed after establishing Jagdamba Steels in 1994 and Jagdamba Cement in 2001. It was followed by a plastic yarn manufacturing company Jagdamba Synthetics and pipes, tubes and TMT bars manufacturer Jagdamba Enterprises in 2001. Jagdamba Entreprises has been the authorised distributor of Tata Steelium for Nepal since 2006.
In 2014, Shanker Group partnered with Ambe Group and initiated a USD 60 million cement project, Riddhi Siddhi Cement. 'content' => '
More than six decades ago, Duli Chandra Sharda set up a rice mill in Lahan namely Pashupati Rice Mill. It was this rice mill that built a base for the establishment of Sharda Group. Prior to that, Duli Chandra Sharda and his father were Lahan-based small traders who traded in rice, jute, mustard seeds etc. Back then, farmers and traders travelled to India with their paddy. Lack of a rice mill in the Terai region encouraged Duli Chandra to set up a rice mill in Lahan. There was no looking back after that. In the subsequent years, he added three more rice mills in Lahan, three more in other parts of Siraha district and one in Janakpur. They also opened a sugar mill which unfortunately failed but their oil mill business succeeded.
Later, the sons of Duli Chandra, established two rolling mills in Nepal, Everest Iron and Steel Industry in Biratnagar and Hetauda Iron Industries in Hetauda. Following the establishment of the rice mill and iron and steel industry, the family went into more industries such as solvent extraction, oxygen plant and ghee manufacturing and plants. The group manufactured wire and cables, flour, lentil, and noodle and shoe, carpet and grain spirit.
In 2000, Sharda Group, in a joint venture with Jaju Group, established Asian Thai Food which is the producer of noodle brands such as Rumpum, Preeti and 2PM. Twelve years later, the two groups started another joint venture as Asian Biscuit and Confectionary. The confectionary group started producing Goodlife brand of biscuits in 2014.
In 2006, the group entered the cement industry establishing Shivam Cement. In 2017, the group signed a joint venture with China’s Hongshi Group and established Hongshi-Shivam Cement. The joint venture project is valued at USD 359 million and is expected to be operational by 2018. The group has also entered the hydropower sector with Ridi Hydropower while there are other hydropower projects in the pipeline too. The group is a leading promoter at Kumari Bank and is present in NMB Bank and Sunrise Bank too. Pioneer Motocorp, a subsidiary of the group, represents Datsun in Nepal.

Soaltee Hotel, founded in 1967 and later managed by Oberoi Hotel group in 1969, turned into a public limited company in 1975 after Soaltee Enterprises, Nepal Industrial Development Corporation, International Finance Corporation, Oberoi Hotels, Nepal Airlines Corporation and the public bought its stakes. The public limited company now owns the Soaltee Crowne Plaza. Only a few months ago, the Soaltee Hotel Limited expanded its portfolio with a four-star hotel namely Soaltee Westend Premier Hotel in Nepalgunj.
In 1982, Prabhakar Rana established Sipradi Trading Pvt. Ltd. which became the exclusive distributor of Tata Motors Ltd. for Nepal in the same year. Meanwhile, Sipradi Energy, a company under Sipradi group of companies, represents Exide batteries and Luminous inverters. Apart from Sipradi, the Rana group has significant investments in manufacturing and hydropower. In 1986, Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd., an Indo-Nepal-UK joint venture was established which manufactures the Surya brand of cigarettes, a best-selling cigarette brand in Nepal. Apart from the tobacco business, the company is engaged in the business of safety matches, incense and readymade garments.
In 1996, Bhote Koshi Power Company was added to the Rana’s group of businesses. Together with Soaltee Enterprises and Surya Enterprises, the investment companies through which the Rana family has made investments, the Rana group also has engagements in other businesses such as travel, transport and shipping, tea processing and private equity management.
With the growing and ever expanding business, Siddhartha SJB Rana (son of Prabhakar SJB Rana) who currently looks after the entire business operations has been often named as the top individual income taxpayer in Nepal, while Surya Nepal has often made it to the list of the top 10 tax paying enterprises. In addition, Sipradi Trading is amongst the highest tax-paying trading enterprises in Nepal bagging the award in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Although the group of businesses doesn’t have an official group name, it is believed that they prefer the name Siddhartha Rana Group.

The power company owns the 45 MW Upper Bhote Koshi hydro power project which is the first privately funded run of the river hydropower project in Nepal.

'content' => '

Afterwards, the group formed Sanima Hydro, a group of private and public companies with investments from NRNs. After the successful implementation of the Sunkoshi Small Hydropower Project, the group established multiple special purpose vehicles and invested in multiple hydropower projects with a total generation capacity of over 100 MW. The companies under Sanima Hydro include, Sanima Hydropower Limited, Sanima Middle Tamor Hydropower Ltd, Sanima Hydro and Engineering Pvt Ltd, Tamor Sanima Energy Pvt Ltd, Swet Ganga Hydropower and Construction Ltd and Sanima Hydro and Engineering Pvt Ltd (SHEPL).

Sanima Group of Companies now comprises a life insurance company, Sanima Life Insurance, while a general insurance company is all set to begin operation in April.

Shanker Lal Agrawal, the youngest son of Rawat, whose initial exposure was in the fabric business continued his father’s business and established Shanker Group in 1979.

The power company owns the 45 MW Upper Bhote Koshi hydro power project which is the first privately funded run of the river hydropower project in Nepal.

'content' => '

Their investment efforts were complimented by Belarus-Russian entrepreneurs including Dr Upendra Mahato, Khem Lamichhane, Binaya Kumar Shrestha, Dr Niraj Govind Shrestha, Olga Ojha, Ram Krishna Shah and Ghanashyam Thapa.

A decade later, the development bank was upgraded to a commercial bank which has been a key milestone for the group. Sanima Group of Companies now comprises a life insurance company, Sanima Life Insurance, while a general insurance company is all set to begin operation in April.

Golyan was originally from Myanmar and arrived in Nepal exploring business opportunities. After the failure of the button factory, Golyan returned to trading.
Shanker Lal Agrawal, the youngest son of Rawat, whose initial exposure was in the fabric business continued his father’s business and established Shanker Group in 1979.

'content' => '
Prabhakar SJB Rana, the Chairman Emeritus of Soaltee Crowne Plaza, has been engaged in a number of sectors particularly hospitality, trade, automobiles and hydropower.
The power company owns the 45 MW Upper Bhote Koshi hydro power project which is the first privately funded run of the river hydropower project in Nepal.
