India was also positive about another proposal forwarded by Nepal to use Dhamra Port in the east coast of India for overseas business.

However, no official agreement has been reached regarding the outcome of the meeting.

So far, Nepal has been using customs points at Kakkarbhitta of Jhapa, Biratnagar of Morang, Birgunj of Parsa, Bhairahawa of Rupandehi and Nepalgunj of Banke for overseas business. Other customs points are limited to business with India only. Krishnanagar is one of such customs points, which the government wants to develop as a major customs point.

Biratnagar is all set to be linked with railway network while Birgunj is already linked to railway. The government is planning to link Kakarbhitta, Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj with railway network but the work has not started yet.

Krishnanagar customs point has not been used for overseas trade but interestingly there is railway service just 500 meters across the border. If developed into an overseas trade point, Nepal can utilize this border without incurring much expenses.

Former joint secretary at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies Ravi Shankar Sainju points out three major factors for developing this customs point for overseas business.

First of all, the customs point can link Nepal with the western port of India. Secondly, there is already rail service at India’s Badhani which operates train service to India’s Mundra Port. This, according to Sainju, would cut down expenses for operating railway service. Thirdly, the infrastructures at Nepalgunj and Dodhara-Chandani borders are yet to be developed. Sainju argues that all these factors show that Krishnanagar Customs Point is ready to be operated for overseas business.

“We had asked for access to Jwahar Lal Nehru Port of Mumbai but the India authorities did not show interest because of the excessive overflow of goods there,” said Sainju, adding, “So we asked for access to Mundra Port as an alternative.”

According to Sainju, there is a possibility to develop Kapilbastu, Banke, Dang among other districts as industrial corridor if the decision to link Krisnhanagar with Mundra Port materializes.

Across the border, Badhani Rail Sub-Station of India is linked to big cities of India like Lucknow, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata among others. Developing this customs point can also boost bilateral trade, according to analysts.

Currently, Nepal imports coal, clinker, gymsum and other raw materials through Krishnanagar customs point all the way from India’s Assam, Jharkhand and Chhatisgadh.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-06-09', 'modified' => '2019-06-09', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '10611', 'image' => '20190609010610_11111111.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-06-09 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 9 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10859', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Himalayan Travel Mart Kicks Off', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'June 7: The third edition of Himalayan Travel Mart kicked off in the capital on Thursday, June 6.', 'content' => '
June 7: The third edition of Himalayan Travel Mart kicked off in the capital on Thursday, June 6.

Nepal has been organising this event since 2017 to promote this country as the ‘Gateway to the Himalayas” as well as to potray Nepal as an adventure tourism destination in front of the world.

Inaugurating the event at Soaltee Crowne Plaza, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli informed the audience that Nepal, a naturally beautiful country, is an ideal destination for adventure tourism.

He said that such event is the right medium to develop new tourism products.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Tourism Dhan Bahadur Budha said that the Himalayan Travel Mart showed that the government was serious about developing the tourism sector.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-06-09', 'modified' => '2019-06-09', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '10611', 'image' => '20190609010610_11111111.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-06-09 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 9 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10859', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Himalayan Travel Mart Kicks Off', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'June 7: The third edition of Himalayan Travel Mart kicked off in the capital on Thursday, June 6.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-06-09', 'modified' => '2019-06-09', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '10611', 'image' => '20190609010610_11111111.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-06-09 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 9 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10859', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Himalayan Travel Mart Kicks Off', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'June 7: The third edition of Himalayan Travel Mart kicked off in the capital on Thursday, June 6.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-06-09', 'modified' => '2019-06-09', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '10611', 'image' => '20190609010610_11111111.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-06-09 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 9 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10859', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Himalayan Travel Mart Kicks Off', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'June 7: The third edition of Himalayan Travel Mart kicked off in the capital on Thursday, June 6.', 'content' => '
