"Fossil fuels will continue to dominate the energy mix in the coming decades, with the demand for coal set to rise by more than 50% over the outlook period, or nearly 2% a year, led by consumption in the People’s Republic of China and a pickup in use in Southeast Asia as countries look for low cost options to diversify existing supply sources," states the report entitled Energy Outlook for Asia and the Pacific. The report also forecast oil demand to grow by 2% a year, led by the transport sector, with newly affluent South Asians buying an increasing number of motor vehicles. "Natural gas demand will expand at the fastest annual pace of 4% because of the lower environmental burden and ease of use," says the ADB reoprt. The report provides in-depth data and projections on energy use at the sub-region, country, and sector levels until 2035, along with an analysis of the impacts of a “business as usual” approach to power, and an alternative approach in which countries scale up efficiencies and low carbon technologies.

“Our projections show the region will consume more than half the world’s energy supply by 2035, with electricity consumption more than doubling as economic growth and rising affluence drive demand,” said S. Chander, Special Senior Advisor, Infrastructure and Public-Private Partnerships at ADB. “Countries cannot meet these huge power requirements all on their own, so the region must accelerate cross-border interconnection of electricity and gas grids to improve efficiencies, cut costs, and take advantage of surplus energy.” The reliance on fossil fuels presents major pricing, energy security, and environmental challenges, with Asia and the Pacific’s carbon dioxide emissions set to double by 2035, making up more than half the world’s total output. Without reducing its heavy reliance on oil imports, using power more efficiently, and adopting more green energy options, the region will see a growing energy divide between the rich and poor, and increasing threats from climate change.

"Using a mix of efficiency measures, advanced generation technologies, and greater use of renewable power could almost halve the projected annual rise in energy demand through to 2035. More efficient oil refining and gas processing, along with a reduction in demand for electricity, offer the bulk of the energy savings potential," says the report.

The report also highlights opportunities for building on existing cross-border power exchange initiatives in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Central Asia, with the ultimate goal of establishing a pan-Asia energy market by 2030. A new report released by the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) on August 29 finds that this will not only improve their livelihoods but is also an enormous market potential which waits to be tapped. "Today, 2.5 billion people lack access to sanitation and at least 780 million people lack access to safe drinking water. Global estimates of economic losses from the lack of access to water and sanitation are estimated at US$260 billion every year," the report said.

“The public sector alone cannot meet this massive challenge; if we want to end extreme poverty by 2030 and boost shared prosperity for the bottom 40%, we will have to scale up water and sanitation access,” said WSP Manager Jae So. “And to do that, both the public and private sector will need to work together.”

One of the most striking findings of Tapping the Markets: Opportunities for Domestic Investments in Water and Sanitation for the Poor, is the enormous market potential. That is 10 times the current number, a market worth at least US$90 million a year. Recently, Sujan Dhungana of The Corporate talked to Mahinay on some of the ongoing projects of VSO Nepal and its operational hurdles. Excerpts:

Could you shed light on the major working areas of (VSO) Nepal?
VSO Nepal is part of VSO International, a development organisation based in the United Kingdom working in 33 countries including Nepal. Most organizations that are involved in the sector do their work by providing funds to partner organisations and the projects. Instead of funds, we provide international volunteer-experts. We send our volunteers to different working areas. We have been working in Nepal since 1964 AD. Our focus areas are health, education and secured livelihood.

What about your ongoing projects?
We are into a number of projects. Most of our projects are aimed at alleviation of poverty through education, secure livelihoods and health services. We concentrate most of our resources in the Mid- and Far- West as these are the poorest areas and quite remote. But we also have volunteers in other parts of the country. We are involved in for example, training school teachers, and we are working on improving maternal health services at Mugu District Hospital, or helping train farmers on agriculture.

We also have projects to encourage girl’s education. Our volunteers are assigned in different communities and schools. As well as supporting in the improvement of the quality of formal education, we also encourage girl’s education. We are also working on sustainable livelihood projects including looking at the effects of climate change here in Nepal.

How has VSO rated Nepal’s march towards attaining its Millennium Development goals (MDGs)?
Attaining all of the MDGs would be quite difficult for any country. However, in the context of Nepal, the country has made good progress in health and education.

Although a plethora of anti-poverty programmes have been implemented in Nepal, majority of Nepalis are still poor. What is your view on this?
Well, alleviation of poverty is something that takes time. The poverty level in the country is on a decline. In addition to that, poverty is perceived in different ways by different people. I believe that trying to alleviate poverty through means of education, good health services and providing knowledge about secured living would be a best way out.

What about VSO Nepal’s operational challenges in Nepal?
Whenever we work through our volunteers, we sometimes witness challenges related to lack of understanding of the socio-cultural context. As our volunteers are foreigners, they find it difficult in the beginning to understand the Nepali context. To help them develop a better understanding of the context, therefore, we provide them with an in-country orientation as soon as they arrive in Nepal. This helps them to adapt, and as a result, enable them to provide relevant and important support to partner communities.

What are your expectations from the Nepali government for efficient and effective mobilisation of aid?
Well, we have very good relationship with the government of Nepal as we are working hand-in-hand with various ministries and some governmental bodies. The government treats our volunteers and the staffers as its own. Similarly, the good understanding and interaction among government staffers should continue.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2013-06-28', 'modified' => '0000-00-00', 'keywords' => 'new business age corporate focus news & articles, corporate focus news & articles from new business age nepal, corporate focus headlines from nepal, current and latest corporate focus news from nepal, economic news from nepal, nepali corporate focus economic news and events, ongoing corporate foc', 'description' => 'new business age corporate focus news & articles, corporate focus news & articles from new business age nepal, corporate focus headlines from nepal, current and latest corporate focus news from nepal, economic news from nepal, nepali corporate focus economic news and events, ongoing corporate focus news of nepal', 'sortorder' => '1036', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '0000-00-00 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => false, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '0' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '1173', 'article_category_id' => '138', 'title' => 'Atmospheric Changes Affects Economy: Experts', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => null, 'content' => '
Atmospheric researchers from around the globe have opined that changes in the Asian summer monsoon have implications on the weather, people’s health, agriculture, and glaciers of the entire Hindu Kush Himalayan region.

As per the report, in South Asia considerable progress has been made in primary school enrolment that increased to 93 per cent from 78 per cent during 2011 and 2000.

Focusing only on Bangladesh, Benin, and Cambodia, about 20 million people are projected to obtain their water from rural piped water schemes by 2025.
