The interaction titled &lsquo;Post-Earthquake Conflict Resolution&rsquo; was organised by South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE) in the capital on Tuesday, October 31.</p>

<p>This is the fifth such discussion forum organized by SAWTEE under the project &lsquo;Initiating dialogue on Post Disaster Reconstruction Experience&rsquo; undertaken with support from The Asia Foundation (TAF), reads a press statement issued by SAWTEE.</p>

<p>Mohan Das Manandhar, executive director of Niti Foundation, pointed out that the earthquake-affected areas have seen a number of conflicts related to loss of livelihood, unequal distribution of aid, issues related to ownership of land, migration and the resultant resource crunch, struggle arising from scarcity of drinking water and irrigation resources.</p>

<p>He said that cases of domestic violence have increased in the earthquake affected areas, which is also a part of increased conflict. However, the nature of these conflicts is not only issue-based, he explained, adding that these are the manifestations brought by the existing institutions such as caste, religion, identity and resultant access to resources.</p>

<p>Thus, existing legal and alternate dispute settlement mechanism needs to be strengthened adequately to address the conflicts arising during disasters.This opinion was seconded by Dr Ram Krishna Timalsena, executive director of National Law College and former registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal.</p>

<p>During reconstruction, legal and conflict-mediation experts said that there should be provisions such as free legal aid to the victims in need, prioritised handling of disaster related cases at the court, but such mechanism is not present in the present legal framework.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Moreover, lack of redressal mechanism is also stifling the conflict resolution,&rdquo; Timalsena added, citing that if a chief district office refuses compensation to the victims under certain conditions, the victims do not have any access to redressal.</p>

<p>Ajay Dixit, executive director of I-SET Nepal, pointed out that the social and political forces contribute to escalation and de-escalation of conflicts at such times.</p>

<p>Preeti Thapa, senior program officer at The Asia Foundation, emphasised that if the systemic roots of these conflicts are not addressed then mediations will only be episodic.</p>

<p>Some 30 participants from various organizations, including research institutions, experts, activists and development partners, participated in the event.</p>

<p>Nepal Mountain College (NMC) affiliated to TU is starting Bachelors of Mountaineering Study (BMS). According to Krishna Kumar Niraula, director of NMC, the college is taking interview of students who passed the central management admission test (CMAT).</p>

<p>NMC which was trying to get affiliation since two years got affiliation in January/February this year.</p>

<p>Started as an academic course for the first time in the world, international students have also shown interest in the course. However, due to different provision such as entrance exam, international students are not being able to join the course.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Fulfill all the criteria set by TU and visa problems are the reason due to which international students are not being able to get admission,&rdquo; Niraula said. He further said that the college will be making provision for admission of international students from next year in coordination with TU.</p>

<p>Students securing more than 45 percent in intermediate level in any faculty are eligible to join the course. The four year course is divided into eight semesters. Currently, the college has fixed the cost of course at Rs 600,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last year, NTB had allocated a total of Rs 142.5 million to promote Nepali tourism industry and to advertise in the international arena. According to Deepak Raj Joshi, chief executive officer (CEO) of NTB, this step will help Nepali tourism industry to grow, as the international media will advertise the possibilities of Nepali tourism. &nbsp;</p>

<p>This is the fifth such discussion forum organized by SAWTEE under the project &lsquo;Initiating dialogue on Post Disaster Reconstruction Experience&rsquo; undertaken with support from The Asia Foundation (TAF), reads a press statement issued by SAWTEE.</p>

<p>Mohan Das Manandhar, executive director of Niti Foundation, pointed out that the earthquake-affected areas have seen a number of conflicts related to loss of livelihood, unequal distribution of aid, issues related to ownership of land, migration and the resultant resource crunch, struggle arising from scarcity of drinking water and irrigation resources.</p>

<p>He said that cases of domestic violence have increased in the earthquake affected areas, which is also a part of increased conflict. However, the nature of these conflicts is not only issue-based, he explained, adding that these are the manifestations brought by the existing institutions such as caste, religion, identity and resultant access to resources.</p>

<p>Thus, existing legal and alternate dispute settlement mechanism needs to be strengthened adequately to address the conflicts arising during disasters.This opinion was seconded by Dr Ram Krishna Timalsena, executive director of National Law College and former registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal.</p>

<p>During reconstruction, legal and conflict-mediation experts said that there should be provisions such as free legal aid to the victims in need, prioritised handling of disaster related cases at the court, but such mechanism is not present in the present legal framework.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Moreover, lack of redressal mechanism is also stifling the conflict resolution,&rdquo; Timalsena added, citing that if a chief district office refuses compensation to the victims under certain conditions, the victims do not have any access to redressal.</p>

<p>Ajay Dixit, executive director of I-SET Nepal, pointed out that the social and political forces contribute to escalation and de-escalation of conflicts at such times.</p>

<p>Preeti Thapa, senior program officer at The Asia Foundation, emphasised that if the systemic roots of these conflicts are not addressed then mediations will only be episodic.</p>

<p>Some 30 participants from various organizations, including research institutions, experts, activists and development partners, participated in the event.</p>

<p>Nepal Mountain College (NMC) affiliated to TU is starting Bachelors of Mountaineering Study (BMS). According to Krishna Kumar Niraula, director of NMC, the college is taking interview of students who passed the central management admission test (CMAT).</p>

<p>NMC which was trying to get affiliation since two years got affiliation in January/February this year.</p>

<p>Started as an academic course for the first time in the world, international students have also shown interest in the course. However, due to different provision such as entrance exam, international students are not being able to join the course.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Fulfill all the criteria set by TU and visa problems are the reason due to which international students are not being able to get admission,&rdquo; Niraula said. <p>Last year, NTB had allocated a total of Rs 142.5 million to promote Nepali tourism industry and to advertise in the international arena. According to Deepak Raj Joshi, chief executive officer (CEO) of NTB, this step will help Nepali tourism industry to grow, as the international media will advertise the possibilities of Nepali tourism. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Mohan Das Manandhar, executive director of Niti Foundation, pointed out that the earthquake-affected areas have seen a number of conflicts related to loss of livelihood, unequal distribution of aid, issues related to ownership of land, migration and the resultant resource crunch, struggle arising from scarcity of drinking water and irrigation resources.</p>

<p>He said that cases of domestic violence have increased in the earthquake affected areas, which is also a part of increased conflict. However, the nature of these conflicts is not only issue-based, he explained, adding that these are the manifestations brought by the existing institutions such as caste, religion, identity and resultant access to resources.</p>

<p>Thus, existing legal and alternate dispute settlement mechanism needs to be strengthened adequately to address the conflicts arising during disasters.This opinion was seconded by Dr Ram Krishna Timalsena, executive director of National Law College and former registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal.</p>

<p>During reconstruction, legal and conflict-mediation experts said that there should be provisions such as free legal aid to the victims in need, prioritised handling of disaster related cases at the court, but such mechanism is not present in the present legal framework.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Moreover, lack of redressal mechanism is also stifling the conflict resolution,&rdquo; Timalsena added, citing that if a chief district office refuses compensation to the victims under certain conditions, the victims do not have any access to redressal.</p>

<p>Ajay Dixit, executive director of I-SET Nepal, pointed out that the social and political forces contribute to escalation and de-escalation of conflicts at such times.</p>

<p>Preeti Thapa, senior program officer at The Asia Foundation, emphasised that if the systemic roots of these conflicts are not addressed then mediations will only be episodic.</p>

<p>Some 30 participants from various organizations, including research institutions, experts, activists and development partners, participated in the event.</p>

<p>Nepal Mountain College (NMC) affiliated to TU is starting Bachelors of Mountaineering Study (BMS). According to Krishna Kumar Niraula, director of NMC, the college is taking interview of students who passed the central management admission test (CMAT).</p>

<p>NMC which was trying to get affiliation since two years got affiliation in January/February this year.</p>

<p>Started as an academic course for the first time in the world, international students have also shown interest in the course. However, due to different provision such as entrance exam, international students are not being able to join the course.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Fulfill all the criteria set by TU and visa problems are the reason due to which international students are not being able to get admission,&rdquo; Niraula said. He further said that the college will be making provision for admission of international students from next year in coordination with TU.</p>

<p>Students securing more than 45 percent in intermediate level in any faculty are eligible to join the course. The four year course is divided into eight semesters. Currently, the college has fixed the cost of course at Rs 600,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

The interaction titled &lsquo;Post-Earthquake Conflict Resolution&rsquo; was organised by South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE) in the capital on Tuesday, October 31.</p>

<p>This is the fifth such discussion forum organized by SAWTEE under the project &lsquo;Initiating dialogue on Post Disaster Reconstruction Experience&rsquo; undertaken with support from The Asia Foundation (TAF), reads a press statement issued by SAWTEE.</p>

<p>Mohan Das Manandhar, executive director of Niti Foundation, pointed out that the earthquake-affected areas have seen a number of conflicts related to loss of livelihood, unequal distribution of aid, issues related to ownership of land, migration and the resultant resource crunch, struggle arising from scarcity of drinking water and irrigation resources.</p>

<p>He said that cases of domestic violence have increased in the earthquake affected areas, which is also a part of increased conflict. However, the nature of these conflicts is not only issue-based, he explained, adding that these are the manifestations brought by the existing institutions such as caste, religion, identity and resultant access to resources.</p>

<p>Thus, existing legal and alternate dispute settlement mechanism needs to be strengthened adequately to address the conflicts arising during disasters.This opinion was seconded by Dr Ram Krishna Timalsena, executive director of National Law College and former registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal.</p>

<p>During reconstruction, legal and conflict-mediation experts said that there should be provisions such as free legal aid to the victims in need, prioritised handling of disaster related cases at the court, but such mechanism is not present in the present legal framework.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Moreover, lack of redressal mechanism is also stifling the conflict resolution,&rdquo; Timalsena added, citing that if a chief district office refuses compensation to the victims under certain conditions, the victims do not have any access to redressal.</p>

<p>Ajay Dixit, executive director of I-SET Nepal, pointed out that the social and political forces contribute to escalation and de-escalation of conflicts at such times.</p>

<p>Preeti Thapa, senior program officer at The Asia Foundation, emphasised that if the systemic roots of these conflicts are not addressed then mediations will only be episodic.</p>

<p>Some 30 participants from various organizations, including research institutions, experts, activists and development partners, participated in the event.</p>

<p>Currently, mountain climbing courses worldwide are provided only as training but not as academic subject.</p>

<p>The courses will start from November this year.</p>

<p>Nepal Mountain College (NMC) affiliated to TU is starting Bachelors of Mountaineering Study (BMS). According to Krishna Kumar Niraula, director of NMC, the college is taking interview of students who passed the central management admission test (CMAT).</p>

<p>NMC which was trying to get affiliation since two years got affiliation in January/February this year.</p>

<p>Started as an academic course for the first time in the world, international students have also shown interest in the course. However, due to different provision such as entrance exam, international students are not being able to join the course.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Fulfill all the criteria set by TU and visa problems are the reason due to which international students are not being able to get admission,&rdquo; Niraula said. He further said that the college will be making provision for admission of international students from next year in coordination with TU.</p>

<p>Students securing more than 45 percent in intermediate level in any faculty are eligible to join the course. The four year course is divided into eight semesters. Currently, the college has fixed the cost of course at Rs 600,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to NTB, it will pay a total of Rs 30.5 million each to both the organizations.</p>

<p>The board has already allocated budget for this purpose, and will soon sign deals with both the organizations. Last year, NTB had signed a $650,000 deal with BBC for six months, $250,000 with Trip Advisor for a year and $75,000 with Reuters for three months.</p>

<p>Last year, NTB had allocated a total of Rs 142.5 million to promote Nepali tourism industry and to advertise in the international arena. According to Deepak Raj Joshi, chief executive officer (CEO) of NTB, this step will help Nepali tourism industry to grow, as the international media will advertise the possibilities of Nepali tourism. &nbsp;</p>
