', 'content' => '
September 20: The World Bank has said that the decline in poverty rates has slowed, raising concerns about achieving the goal of ending poverty by 2030, although fewer people are living in extreme poverty around the world.

The percentage of people living in extreme poverty globally fell to a new low of 10 percent in 2015 — the latest number available — down from 11 percent in 2013, reflecting steady but slowing progress, World Bank data show. The number of people living on less than $1.90 a day fell during this period by 68 million to 736 million, according to the World Bank.

“Over the last 25 years, more than a billion people have lifted themselves out of extreme poverty, and the global poverty rate is now lower than it has ever been in recorded history. This is one of the greatest human achievements of our time,” World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said. “But if we are going to end poverty by 2030, we need much more investment, particularly in building human capital, to help promote the inclusive growth it will take to reach the remaining poor. For their sake, we cannot fail.”
The World Bank stressed on the need for increased pro-poor investments to meet the target.

The World Bank observed that despite the tremendous progress in reducing extreme poverty, rates remain stubbornly high in low-income countries and those affected by conflict and political upheaval.

The estimates will be published in “Poverty and Shared Prosperity 2018: Piecing Together the Poverty Puzzle,” a report to be released on October 17, End Poverty Day.

About half of the world’s countries now have poverty rates below 3 percent, but the report finds that the world as a whole is not on track to achieve the target of less than 3 percent of the world living in extreme poverty by 2030.

According to the World Bank, in the 25 years from 1990 to 2015, the extreme poverty rate dropped an average of a percentage point per year – from nearly 36% to 10%. But the rate dropped only one percentage point in the two years from 2013 to 2015.

The deceleration in global numbers stems mainly from an increasing concentration of extreme poverty in regions where poverty reduction has lagged, the report further said.

A case in point is Sub-Saharan Africa, where, under all but the most optimistic scenarios, poverty will remain in double digits by 2030, due to the absence of significant shifts in policy.

Slowing declines in poverty also reflect falling commodity prices, conflict, and other economic challenges for developing countries, the World Bank said in a statement.

The World Bank’s preliminary forecast is that extreme poverty has declined to 8.6 percent in 2018.

Two regions, East Asia and Pacific and Europe and Central Asia, have reduced extreme poverty to below 3 percent. The Middle East and North Africa region had previously been below 3 percent in 2013, but conflict in Syria and Yemen raised its poverty rate in 2015.
The international poverty line is currently valued at $1.90 in terms of 2011 purchasing power parity, which equalizes its purchasing power across all countries and currencies.
', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-09-20', 'modified' => '2018-09-20', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '8913', 'image' => '20180920023602_Clipboard01.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-09-20 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 1 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9134', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Footwear Exhibition at Bhrikuti Mandap', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'September 20: Footwear Manufacturers’ Association of Nepal has started a fair at Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu exhibiting shoes and slippers at affordable rates. These include improving the financial viability of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) as the sole off-taker; establishing a regulatory framework that is transparent, autonomous, and accountable; encouraging electricity trade; and restructuring NEA to make it easier for the private sector to compete in the energy sector, the WB said in a statement.

“The proposed credit aims to support the restructuring and market reform of the electricity sector to improve governance and performance of electricity institutions, eventually enhancing quality and efficiency in services,” the statement quoted Faris Hadad-Zervos, World Bank’s country manager for Nepal, as saying. “Our goal is to seek integration into the regional electricity market and create a competitive wholesale market.”

Despite Nepal’s large hydro generation potential, electricity constitutes of less than 5 percent of energy consumption, the World Bank said. While 95 percent of the population is estimated to have access to grade and off-grid electricity, the per capita electricity consumption of 177 kWh per year is a twentieth of the global average, and a fifth of the per capita electricity consumption in South Asia.

Nepal also relies increasingly on electricity imports to reduce the electricity shortage in the country, while large export-oriented hydropower projects are yet to materialize in spite of huge opportunities. The World Bank further said that the credit aims to implement policy and institutional measures to overcome these challenges and help bring about structural reforms in the energy sector, to ensure affordable electricity services and encourage predictability for sustainable investment.

“The development policy credit is linked to the government’s key sector goals of expanding access to electricity to one hundred percent of the population,” said Xiaoping Wang, senior energy specialist at the World Bank and co-task team leader of the project. “In the long term, the implementation of the credit will also support key institutional and policy actions necessary for the removal of binding constraints to private investment in the sector,” she added.
', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-09-19', 'modified' => '2018-09-19', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '8906', 'image' => '20180919025647_Energy Sector.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-09-19 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 8 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9126', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Partnership between Century Bank and Medicity Hospital', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'September 19: Century Commercial Bank has signed an agreement with Nepal Medicity Hospital with the motive of providing its account holders with health care facility at affordable rate.', 'content' => '
September 19: Century Commercial Bank has signed an agreement with Nepal Medicity Hospital with the motive of providing its account holders with health care facility at affordable rate.

Bijay Rijal, general manager of Nepal Medicity Hospital, and Ranjan Khadka, chief marketing officer of the bank, signed the agreement amid a recent event.

According to the agreement, the account holders and the employees of the bank will receive special discount on various health care services from the hospital.
', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-09-19', 'modified' => '2018-09-19', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '8905', 'image' => '20180919024739_medicity century.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-09-19 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 9 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9125', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Sunrise ATM in Tinkune', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'September 19: Sunrise Bank has installed a new ATM counter in Tinkune to facilitate its account holders.', 'content' => '
September 19: Sunrise Bank has installed a new ATM counter in Tinkune to facilitate its account holders.

The ATM counter was jointly inaugurated by Jyoti Kumar Begani, chairman of Sunrise Bank, and Gyanendra Dutt, Tinkune branch manager of Sunrise Bank, amid an event on Tuesday, September 18.

Ratna Raj Bajracharya, CEO of Sunrise Bank, informed that the bank has been providing modern banking service across the country with a network of 91 branches, 107 ATMs, 23 branchless banking facilities and four extension counters.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-09-19', 'modified' => '2018-09-19', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '8904', 'image' => '20180919024324_sunrise.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-09-19 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 10 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9124', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Colors Announces Dashain and Tihar Offer', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'September 19: Colors Mobile has come up with a festive scheme "Colors Happy Sawari" on the occasion of Dashain and Tihar. ', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-09-19', 'modified' => '2018-09-19', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '8906', 'image' => '20180919025647_Energy Sector.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-09-19 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 8 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9126', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Partnership between Century Bank and Medicity Hospital', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'September 19: Century Commercial Bank has signed an agreement with Nepal Medicity Hospital with the motive of providing its account holders with health care facility at affordable rate.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-09-19', 'modified' => '2018-09-19', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '8905', 'image' => '20180919024739_medicity century.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-09-19 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 9 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9125', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Sunrise ATM in Tinkune', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'September 19: Sunrise Bank has installed a new ATM counter in Tinkune to facilitate its account holders.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-09-19', 'modified' => '2018-09-19', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '8904', 'image' => '20180919024324_sunrise.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-09-19 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 10 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9124', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Colors Announces Dashain and Tihar Offer', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'September 19: Colors Mobile has come up with a festive scheme "Colors Happy Sawari" on the occasion of Dashain and Tihar. ', 'content' => '
