A meeting of the Technical Committee of the Trade and Export Promotion Centre (TEPC) on January 1 decided to recommend the names of 36 exporters, importers, investors, employers and entrepreneurs to the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies (MoCS) in order to recognize them with the CIP hounour within the month of January. According to TEPC Executive Director Ishwari Prasad Ghimire, a minister level decision will be taken at the earliest possible to honour the industrialists and entrepreneurs.</div> <div> </div> <div> According to the Guidelines for the CIP honour, entrepreneurs and companies with controversial background will not be awarded with the honour. It is because of this provision that the list of the entrepreneurs and firms to be hounoured was pending at the In-land Revenue Department (IRD|) for a long time for investigation. “That’s why it took a long time to finalise the list,” a source said. Now the IRD has given its go-ahead, it is learnt. There are eight categories of the entrepreneurs and companies to be awarded the CIP honour - 13 Nepali exporters, nine foreign importers of Nepali goods, eight business chambers and commodities associations, two from the tourism sector, one highest taxpayer, one highest employment creator, one highest investor in manufacturing sector, and one from the remittance sector. Those awarded with the CIP honour will get high priority to meet the Prime Minister and ministers. Similarly they will get VIP privileges at the Tribhuvan International Airport. The project titled “Strengthening the National Rural Transport Programme”, which has received USD 100 million intends to enhance the availability and reliability of transport connectivity in 33 districts. They are Arghakhanchi, Banke, Bara, Bardia, Bhojpur, Dang, Dhading, Dhanusha, Gulmi, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Kapilvastu, Kaski, Mahottari, Makwanpur, Nawalparasi, Nuwakot, Palpa, Parsa, Pyuthan, Rasuwa, Rautahat, Rupandehi, Salyan, Sakhuwasabha, Saptari, Sarlahi, Siraha, Surkhet, Syangja, Tanahu, Tehrathum and Udaypur, according to a press statement from the Bank. Talking to journalists at Bharatpur on December 25, Jha said the country witnessed 15-hour power outage a day last winter. “But, this time it will be limited to 12 hours a day,” said Minister Jha who had reached there to inspect the Narayani river embankment. He added that the government was preparing to import 200 MW of electricity from India to keep the load-shedding duration below 12 hours a day.</div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Biratnagar Golchha Office Gutted</strong></span></div> <div> An estimated property worth over Rs. 50 million was destroyed when the Biratnagar office of Golchha Organisation caught fire on December 26. It took firefighters one and a half hours to douse the fire which was detected at around 9 in the morning. According to sources, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the third floor of the building that housed the account section of the office. The fire is said to have destroyed office equipment, furniture and important records of the office. Out of them, only 835,921 households (21.81 per cent) have availed agro loans. This means a whopping 2,995,172 households do not have access to bank loans. The Report says that of the total farm households, 42 per cent have said that they need agro loans.</div> <div> </div> <div> President of Nepal Bankers’ Association and CEO of Citizens Bank International, Rajan Singh Bhandari informed The Corporate that though banks have increased their investment in the agriculture sector, the banks have not been able to take financial services to all farmers. “The commercial banks lack the capacity to take financial services to all the farming households in the country,” he said.</div> <div> </div> <div> President of Development Bankers Association, Nepal, and CEO of Kaliash Development Bank, Krishna Raj Lamichhane accepts that the agricultural loan flow from the BFIs at present is not enough. “We need a special policy to increase farmers’ access to financial services,” says Lamichhane.</div> <div> </div> <div> The latest census shows that of the farmers who have taken loans for agricultural purpose, 34.57 per cent have borrowed from their relatives. A government team comprising representatives from the finance, energy and law ministries and the Department of Electricity Development (DoED) will head for Saudi Arabia in the third week of December to hold the talks, according to a source at DoED. “The Saudi Fund has shown interest to invest in the Budhiganga Project. It has already agreed to provide a soft loan of around USD 20 million and has already forwarded a draft proposal for the same. We will be discussing the same proposal,” the source explained. The first round of talks between the two sides was held in Kathmandu a few months back. The source further added that a team of the Saudi Fund will come to Kathmandu “soon after” the second round of talks to hold the third round of talks. “We are supposed to sign the loan agreement during the third round of talks,” said the source.</div> <div> </div> <div> •The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has collected Rs 49.5 million in fines from those found guilty of corruption and abuse of authority, according the latest annual report of the commission. Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki presented the Commission’s 2012/13 report to President Dr Yadav at a function held at the Rastrapati Bhawan on December 9. The report says that the CIAA had received 11,298 complaints in the year, of which 6,672 were resolved. Over 440 cases were registered in the regional administration offices, of which 145 were resolved. The CIAA filed 96 cases, including 16 that carried over from the previous fiscal year, at the Special Court. The Commission won 76 of these cases. In this year’s Corruption Perception Index published by Transparency International, Nepal has climbed to the 116th position from 139th in the previous year.</div> <div> </div> <div> •The government on Dec 12 decided to provide a loan of Rs 1.65 billion to the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC). The NRB has set the target of keeping the average inflation rate within 8 percent in the current fiscal year. As a coordinator of the Consultative Group of the LDCs at the ongoing WTO conference in Bali, Indonesia, Nepal has raised its voice to demand a larger space in international trade for LDCs. Also, with the country itself facing barriers aplenty in international trade and a skyrocketing trade deficit, Nepal tried voice its concerns on existing multi-lateral and bilateral trade issues. Though developed countries have pledged Duty-Free-Quota-Free (DFQF) market access to 97 percent of the goods originating from LDCs as per Hong Kong Ministerial Conference in 2005, only around 80- 91 percent of the goods are enjoying such facility. The collected revenue is 20.87 per cent higher compared to the amount of the corresponding period of the last fiscal year. </div> <div> </div> <div> •Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has begun buying an additional 30 MW of power from India in a bid to ease the chronic power shortage in the country during winter. The Power Trading Corporation of India has sold the power to Nepal at a rate of Rs.3.75 (NRs.6) per unit. The additional power import takes Nepal’s total import from India to 165 MW. Nepal has been requesting India to provide at least 250 MW to meet its increasing power deficit. The NEA is aiming to bring down load-shedding to 12 hours this winter by getting more power from India. Currently, there is a shortfall of 350 MW to meet the requirements as existing capacity is just around 700 MW.Measures are being taken to reduce power demand, including operating some multi-fuel plants and revamping existing power plants. According to TEPC Executive Director Ishwari Prasad Ghimire, a minister level decision will be taken at the earliest possible to honour the industrialists and entrepreneurs.</div> <div> </div> <div> According to the Guidelines for the CIP honour, entrepreneurs and companies with controversial background will not be awarded with the honour. It is because of this provision that the list of the entrepreneurs and firms to be hounoured was pending at the In-land Revenue Department (IRD|) for a long time for investigation. “That’s why it took a long time to finalise the list,” a source said. Now the IRD has given its go-ahead, it is learnt. There are eight categories of the entrepreneurs and companies to be awarded the CIP honour - 13 Nepali exporters, nine foreign importers of Nepali goods, eight business chambers and commodities associations, two from the tourism sector, one highest taxpayer, one highest employment creator, one highest investor in manufacturing sector, and one from the remittance sector. Those awarded with the CIP honour will get high priority to meet the Prime Minister and ministers. Similarly they will get VIP privileges at the Tribhuvan International Airport. Talking to journalists at Bharatpur on December 25, Jha said the country witnessed 15-hour power outage a day last winter. “But, this time it will be limited to 12 hours a day,” said Minister Jha who had reached there to inspect the Narayani river embankment. He added that the government was preparing to import 200 MW of electricity from India to keep the load-shedding duration below 12 hours a day.</div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Biratnagar Golchha Office Gutted</strong></span></div> <div> An estimated property worth over Rs. 50 million was destroyed when the Biratnagar office of Golchha Organisation caught fire on December 26. It took firefighters one and a half hours to douse the fire which was detected at around 9 in the morning. According to sources, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the third floor of the building that housed the account section of the office. The fire is said to have destroyed office equipment, furniture and important records of the office. Out of them, only 835,921 households (21.81 per cent) have availed agro loans. This means a whopping 2,995,172 households do not have access to bank loans. The Report says that of the total farm households, 42 per cent have said that they need agro loans.</div> <div> </div> <div> President of Nepal Bankers’ Association and CEO of Citizens Bank International, Rajan Singh Bhandari informed The Corporate that though banks have increased their investment in the agriculture sector, the banks have not been able to take financial services to all farmers. “The commercial banks lack the capacity to take financial services to all the farming households in the country,” he said.</div> <div> </div> <div> President of Development Bankers Association, Nepal, and CEO of Kaliash Development Bank, Krishna Raj Lamichhane accepts that the agricultural loan flow from the BFIs at present is not enough. “We need a special policy to increase farmers’ access to financial services,” says Lamichhane.</div> <div> </div> <div> The latest census shows that of the farmers who have taken loans for agricultural purpose, 34.57 per cent have borrowed from their relatives. A government team comprising representatives from the finance, energy and law ministries and the Department of Electricity Development (DoED) will head for Saudi Arabia in the third week of December to hold the talks, according to a source at DoED. “The Saudi Fund has shown interest to invest in the Budhiganga Project. It has already agreed to provide a soft loan of around USD 20 million and has already forwarded a draft proposal for the same. We will be discussing the same proposal,” the source explained. The first round of talks between the two sides was held in Kathmandu a few months back. The source further added that a team of the Saudi Fund will come to Kathmandu “soon after” the second round of talks to hold the third round of talks. “We are supposed to sign the loan agreement during the third round of talks,” said the source.</div> <div> </div> <div> •The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has collected Rs 49.5 million in fines from those found guilty of corruption and abuse of authority, according the latest annual report of the commission. Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki presented the Commission’s 2012/13 report to President Dr Yadav at a function held at the Rastrapati Bhawan on December 9. The report says that the CIAA had received 11,298 complaints in the year, of which 6,672 were resolved. Over 440 cases were registered in the regional administration offices, of which 145 were resolved. The CIAA filed 96 cases, including 16 that carried over from the previous fiscal year, at the Special Court. The Commission won 76 of these cases. In this year’s Corruption Perception Index published by Transparency International, Nepal has climbed to the 116th position from 139th in the previous year.</div> <div> </div> <div> •The government on Dec 12 decided to provide a loan of Rs 1.65 billion to the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC). The NRB has set the target of keeping the average inflation rate within 8 percent in the current fiscal year. The inflation rate which remained in single digit for three consecutive months of the current fiscal year reached double digit (10 per cent) in the fourth month. The Power Trading Corporation of India has sold the power to Nepal at a rate of Rs.3.75 (NRs.6) per unit. The additional power import takes Nepal’s total import from India to 165 MW. Nepal has been requesting India to provide at least 250 MW to meet its increasing power deficit. The NEA is aiming to bring down load-shedding to 12 hours this winter by getting more power from India. Currently, there is a shortfall of 350 MW to meet the requirements as existing capacity is just around 700 MW.Measures are being taken to reduce power demand, including operating some multi-fuel plants and revamping existing power plants. According to TEPC Executive Director Ishwari Prasad Ghimire, a minister level decision will be taken at the earliest possible to honour the industrialists and entrepreneurs.</div> <div> </div> <div> According to the Guidelines for the CIP honour, entrepreneurs and companies with controversial background will not be awarded with the honour. It is because of this provision that the list of the entrepreneurs and firms to be hounoured was pending at the In-land Revenue Department (IRD|) for a long time for investigation. “That’s why it took a long time to finalise the list,” a source said. Now the IRD has given its go-ahead, it is learnt. There are eight categories of the entrepreneurs and companies to be awarded the CIP honour - 13 Nepali exporters, nine foreign importers of Nepali goods, eight business chambers and commodities associations, two from the tourism sector, one highest taxpayer, one highest employment creator, one highest investor in manufacturing sector, and one from the remittance sector. Those awarded with the CIP honour will get high priority to meet the Prime Minister and ministers. Similarly they will get VIP privileges at the Tribhuvan International Airport. The project titled “Strengthening the National Rural Transport Programme”, which has received USD 100 million intends to enhance the availability and reliability of transport connectivity in 33 districts. They are Arghakhanchi, Banke, Bara, Bardia, Bhojpur, Dang, Dhading, Dhanusha, Gulmi, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Kapilvastu, Kaski, Mahottari, Makwanpur, Nawalparasi, Nuwakot, Palpa, Parsa, Pyuthan, Rasuwa, Rautahat, Rupandehi, Salyan, Sakhuwasabha, Saptari, Sarlahi, Siraha, Surkhet, Syangja, Tanahu, Tehrathum and Udaypur, according to a press statement from the Bank. Talking to journalists at Bharatpur on December 25, Jha said the country witnessed 15-hour power outage a day last winter. “But, this time it will be limited to 12 hours a day,” said Minister Jha who had reached there to inspect the Narayani river embankment. He added that the government was preparing to import 200 MW of electricity from India to keep the load-shedding duration below 12 hours a day.</div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Biratnagar Golchha Office Gutted</strong></span></div> <div> An estimated property worth over Rs. 50 million was destroyed when the Biratnagar office of Golchha Organisation caught fire on December 26. It took firefighters one and a half hours to douse the fire which was detected at around 9 in the morning. According to sources, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the third floor of the building that housed the account section of the office. The fire is said to have destroyed office equipment, furniture and important records of the office. A government team comprising representatives from the finance, energy and law ministries and the Department of Electricity Development (DoED) will head for Saudi Arabia in the third week of December to hold the talks, according to a source at DoED. “The Saudi Fund has shown interest to invest in the Budhiganga Project. It has already agreed to provide a soft loan of around USD 20 million and has already forwarded a draft proposal for the same. We will be discussing the same proposal,” the source explained. The first round of talks between the two sides was held in Kathmandu a few months back. Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki presented the Commission’s 2012/13 report to President Dr Yadav at a function held at the Rastrapati Bhawan on December 9. The report says that the CIAA had received 11,298 complaints in the year, of which 6,672 were resolved. Over 440 cases were registered in the regional administration offices, of which 145 were resolved. The CIAA filed 96 cases, including 16 that carried over from the previous fiscal year, at the Special Court. The Commission won 76 of these cases. As a coordinator of the Consultative Group of the LDCs at the ongoing WTO conference in Bali, Indonesia, Nepal has raised its voice to demand a larger space in international trade for LDCs. Also, with the country itself facing barriers aplenty in international trade and a skyrocketing trade deficit, Nepal tried voice its concerns on existing multi-lateral and bilateral trade issues. Though developed countries have pledged Duty-Free-Quota-Free (DFQF) market access to 97 percent of the goods originating from LDCs as per Hong Kong Ministerial Conference in 2005, only around 80- 91 percent of the goods are enjoying such facility. The Power Trading Corporation of India has sold the power to Nepal at a rate of Rs.3.75 (NRs.6) per unit. The additional power import takes Nepal’s total import from India to 165 MW. Nepal has been requesting India to provide at least 250 MW to meet its increasing power deficit. The NEA is aiming to bring down load-shedding to 12 hours this winter by getting more power from India. Currently, there is a shortfall of 350 MW to meet the requirements as existing capacity is just around 700 MW.Measures are being taken to reduce power demand, including operating some multi-fuel plants and revamping existing power plants. A meeting of the Technical Committee of the Trade and Export Promotion Centre (TEPC) on January 1 decided to recommend the names of 36 exporters, importers, investors, employers and entrepreneurs to the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies (MoCS) in order to recognize them with the CIP hounour within the month of January. According to TEPC Executive Director Ishwari Prasad Ghimire, a minister level decision will be taken at the earliest possible to honour the industrialists and entrepreneurs.</div> <div> </div> <div> According to the Guidelines for the CIP honour, entrepreneurs and companies with controversial background will not be awarded with the honour. It is because of this provision that the list of the entrepreneurs and firms to be hounoured was pending at the In-land Revenue Department (IRD|) for a long time for investigation. “That’s why it took a long time to finalise the list,” a source said. Now the IRD has given its go-ahead, it is learnt. There are eight categories of the entrepreneurs and companies to be awarded the CIP honour - 13 Nepali exporters, nine foreign importers of Nepali goods, eight business chambers and commodities associations, two from the tourism sector, one highest taxpayer, one highest employment creator, one highest investor in manufacturing sector, and one from the remittance sector. Those awarded with the CIP honour will get high priority to meet the Prime Minister and ministers. Similarly they will get VIP privileges at the Tribhuvan International Airport. A government team comprising representatives from the finance, energy and law ministries and the Department of Electricity Development (DoED) will head for Saudi Arabia in the third week of December to hold the talks, according to a source at DoED. “The Saudi Fund has shown interest to invest in the Budhiganga Project. It has already agreed to provide a soft loan of around USD 20 million and has already forwarded a draft proposal for the same. We will be discussing the same proposal,” the source explained. The first round of talks between the two sides was held in Kathmandu a few months back. The source further added that a team of the Saudi Fund will come to Kathmandu “soon after” the second round of talks to hold the third round of talks. “We are supposed to sign the loan agreement during the third round of talks,” said the source.</div> <div> </div> <div> •The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has collected Rs 49.5 million in fines from those found guilty of corruption and abuse of authority, according the latest annual report of the commission. Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki presented the Commission’s 2012/13 report to President Dr Yadav at a function held at the Rastrapati Bhawan on December 9. The report says that the CIAA had received 11,298 complaints in the year, of which 6,672 were resolved. Over 440 cases were registered in the regional administration offices, of which 145 were resolved. The CIAA filed 96 cases, including 16 that carried over from the previous fiscal year, at the Special Court. The Commission won 76 of these cases. In this year’s Corruption Perception Index published by Transparency International, Nepal has climbed to the 116th position from 139th in the previous year.</div> <div> </div> <div> •The government on Dec 12 decided to provide a loan of Rs 1.65 billion to the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC). The NRB has set the target of keeping the average inflation rate within 8 percent in the current fiscal year. The inflation rate which remained in single digit for three consecutive months of the current fiscal year reached double digit (10 per cent) in the fourth month. This ban is not only a major setback to Nepal’s tourism industry, but to the country as a whole. Although none of the Nepali carriers make flight to the 28-nation bloc, the consequences could be seen in the tourism and economy from the travel alert on European travellers to not use Nepali carriers. </div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div> •Ninth WTO Ministerial Conference has concluded at Bali adopting a five-draft decision declaration and the 10-document full Bali Package that addresses the Doha Development Agenda. The last-minute deal would lower trade barriers and speed up the passage of goods through customs. Analysts estimate that over time it could boost the world economy by hundreds of billions of dollars and create more than 20 million jobs, mostly in developing countries. As a coordinator of the Consultative Group of the LDCs at the ongoing WTO conference in Bali, Indonesia, Nepal has raised its voice to demand a larger space in international trade for LDCs. Also, with the country itself facing barriers aplenty in international trade and a skyrocketing trade deficit, Nepal tried voice its concerns on existing multi-lateral and bilateral trade issues. Though developed countries have pledged Duty-Free-Quota-Free (DFQF) market access to 97 percent of the goods originating from LDCs as per Hong Kong Ministerial Conference in 2005, only around 80- 91 percent of the goods are enjoying such facility. Nepal has been getting this facility for 81 percent of its exports to developed countires while some other African LDCs have been enjoying this for 91 percent of their total exports to developed countries under the DFQF. </div> <div> </div> <div> •The government has collected Rs 94.32 billion revenue in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. The amount is Rs 140 million higher than the target. The government had collected Rs 78.3 billion revenue in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year. The collected revenue is 20.87 per cent higher compared to the amount of the corresponding period of the last fiscal year. </div> <div> </div> <div> •Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has begun buying an additional 30 MW of power from India in a bid to ease the chronic power shortage in the country during winter. The Power Trading Corporation of India has sold the power to Nepal at a rate of Rs.3.75 (NRs.6) per unit. The additional power import takes Nepal’s total import from India to 165 MW. Nepal has been requesting India to provide at least 250 MW to meet its increasing power deficit. The NEA is aiming to bring down load-shedding to 12 hours this winter by getting more power from India. Currently, there is a shortfall of 350 MW to meet the requirements as existing capacity is just around 700 MW.Measures are being taken to reduce power demand, including operating some multi-fuel plants and revamping existing power plants.
