April 6: The government has decided to develop new websites, which will be in Hindi and Chinese languages, with an aim to draw in 1.5 million tourists every year by the end of 2020.

The government is developing the websites keeping in mind that the country has immense opportunities to attract Indian and Chinese tourists. The government data also show that majority of tourists coming to Nepal are from the southern and northern neighbours.

According to Rabindra Adhiraki, minister for culture, tourism, and civil aviation, the government is developing the websites to attract additional tourists from both the neighboring countries.

“Apart from developing the websites, the government will also organize different cultural events, among others to promote tourism in the country,” he said.

In the last five years, a total of 670,000 Indian tourists and 512,631 Chinese tourists have visited Nepal. Meanwhile, the Indian tourists coming to Nepal via roadway is not included in the data.

It is estimated that a total of 200 million Chinese and 50 million Indian will visit foreign countries as tourists in 2020. Minsiter Adhikari says that the tourism sector of the country will drastically improve if Nepal succeeds to attract one percent of those tourists.

However, the tourism entrepreneurs have been asking the government to increase investment in the tourism sector. According to Binayak Shah, a tourism entrepreneur, who is also the general secretary of Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN), the government should seriously work to develop the tourism sector.
