Working Class Hero

“But you’re still peasants as far as I can see, a working class hero is something to be….” reads the famous line from singer John Lennon’s song ‘Working Class Hero’. I personally feel that this sharp line in addition refers to the issues of Nepali Labors as picked in the cover story of October’s issue. The bickering and politicization of Nepali trade unions have directly affected foreign investments. It’s also the working labors who are ultimately at the receiving end due to the regular stand-off of their union leaders. As highlighted in the story, the delay in the completion of Upper Karnali Project, frequent strikes, closure of international brands like KFC and Pizza Hut etc have not done any good to Nepal Investment Year 2012/13. It was good to go through the interviews of various people as part of the cover story and learn about their opinions. However, I felt that the interviewees only managed to float lukewarm ideas to overcome the present tumultuous situation of labors in Nepal. I hope that some concrete solutions must be provided at the earliest for safe and sound progress of development activities.

Fun and Frolic at The Last Resort

buji

The adventure and thrill seeking story about The Last Resort was worth reading. Located only 100 kms from Kathmandu valley, the resort seems to be a perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the capital. This featured story in Corporate Focus column is beautifully written and also has carried informative details about the ways to get there and the activities at The Last Resort. As it is said ‘Do the things, you fear, and the death of fear is certain’, I soon wish to visit the resort and become a ‘Bungee Jumper’ myself. The serene location of the resort in the mountainous terrain of Sindhupalchowk district definitely carries high tourism potential. Besides, it makes all of us proud to know that it is listed as one of the best bungee jumps around the world. I still rue that despite being a permanent resident of Kathmandu valley, I haven’t been to the resort yet.

Made in Nepal

It was sheer delight to visit the third edition of the ‘Made in Nepal Products and Service Expo-2012’ in September. The news coverage of Made in Nepal Expo in your magazine further shed light on the importance of buying and selling Nepali products. The organizers, Nepalese Young Entrepreneurs’ Forum (NYEF), Direction Nepal and the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) should be praised for taking initiative to boost locally manufactured products and promote the service industry. At a time when foreign goods are luring the Nepali market, the expo came up with the theme ‘Our Own’, to target and promote local products under a single roof and minimize people’s attraction towards imported goods. Nepali products with high potential exports such as readymade garments, handicrafts items, footwear, carpet, and Pashmina products needs to be well advertised to the public in the coming days.

Beauty of the Brain

brain

Woman entrepreneur Seema Golchha’s courage and determination to stand tall in the male dominated sphere of business field is well appreciated. Golchha’s efforts to maintain a fine balance between personal and professional life is praiseworthy as highlighted in the Personality section of the last issue. The women of South Asia are mostly confined within the household while the business activities are taken care of by the men. And so, it was great to read a gritty story about a woman who carved a niche for herself despite all odds. It gives hope to dreamers like me to take bold steps in life and work towards becoming leaders of tomorrow.

Corrigendum

Mr Hari Karki informed that some of the facts that appeared in his interview in the September 2012 issue of New Business Age, are completely out of context. He further states that he was never involved in Universal Music Company, and it’s his partner in fasttrack.hk (a lifestyle, fashion and entertainment website) who is the ex Universal Music and EMI executive. The error is regretted - Editor
