When one sector developed and prospered, the other remained undeveloped. In the race of economic development, the riches went on getting richer while the poorer went on remaining poorer. Similarly, the difference of classes was clearly visible. In the context of South Asia and especially Nepal, the diversity of ethnicity and caste system was equally diverse in terms of the prosperity and level of development. So, the model of inclusive development for Nepal should be an attempt to bring such marginalised groups of people that have been in poverty and fallen backward in the process of mainstream development, no matter to which caste or ethnic division they belong to. The aim must be the economic prosperity and increased level of human development at the same time for people living in the grassroots. </div> <div> </div> <div> But, where I think the Nepali politics failed to hit the right chord is, it mostly focused on devolution of state power and territory more than on equal distribution of resources and ways to attain balanced development throughout the country. We focused more on federal models based on identity politics. The identity based federal restructuring alone cannot ensure inclusive development. It more or less takes of economic development that can reach to the majority of people. Though the inclusive development tilts more towards the social development and social inclusion, it cannot be separated from the economic development. </div> <div> </div> <div> - Pratikshya Bhandari, Shantinagar, Kathmandu</div> <div> </div> <div> <hr /> <p> <strong>Market Presence </strong></p> </div> <div> I believe Mahindra and Mahindra remains far behind Sworaj and Sonalika tractors in far western and mid western Nepal. One of the reasons behind this is that tractors from Mahindra and Mahindra are priced comparatively higher. Although this brand has worked with Agni Incorporated in Nepal, I don’t find it having aggressive and effective marketing policies compared to some of its biggest competitors. </div> <div> </div> <div> - Arjun Kshetry via website</div> <div> </div> <div> <hr /> <p> <strong>Home Stay </strong></p> </div> <div> Home stay service initiated in Buraunse, one of the remote villages of Humla district is a praiseworthy initiative to bring tourists to Humla. It would not only allow experiencing the lifestyle and culture of Humlis first hand, but also provide a source of livelihood for local people. The culture, traditions and the scenic beauty of Humla can be a perfect destination to domestic tourists, researchers and also trekkers from abroad. The home stay facility initiated by the Great Himalaya Trail there could lead to an evolution of tourism activities through replication in surrounding villages and the development of tourist friendly attitude in local people. In remote villages similar to those of Humla, people can make tourism their main source of income and create markets for local products. But the development of tourism in villages would not be possible only through local initiative. It must be backed by state policies and projects for the promotion and development of tourism activities. </div> <div> </div> <div> - Sandesh Niroula, Biratnagar </div> <div> </div> <div> <hr /> <p> <strong>Merger Movement </strong></p> </div> <div> After much talk about the merger of banks and financial institutions, it seems conversation has shifted to the insurance business. Insurance is also another sector where companies have not reached the majority of Nepal's population. First, the general public is less aware about the benefits of subscribing to life and non life insurance policies. Second, insurance companies too are failing to penetrate the market and create awareness. Moreover, insurance subscription is related to the level of disposable income as a certain amount of monthly income is allocated for insurance premiums. Likewise, in the Nepali market, non-life insurance is still infantile. Apart from large companies, it has hardly reached the consumer level. </div> <div> </div> <div> In an immature market for insurance products, the regulator has come up with a directive to raise paid-up capital for the companies. Therefore, it would be better to go for a merger and create a synergy effect to work effectively in the market. It would help to create a stronger company with wider reach and larger customer base. But there is not harm if companies choose to increase their capital through other means. </div> <div> </div> <div> - Bimala Nakarmi, Dhobighat, Lalitpur </div> <div> </div> <div> <hr /> <p> <strong>A complete package </strong></p> </div> <div> I am a regular reader of the New Business Age. The central bank’s initiative to lower the number of BFIs through mergers is a a quite welcoming attempt. Mergers and acquisitions, if well executed will result into a more effective, efficient and a stronger company. </span></p> <p> At the moment, merger is not a challenge for the financial market but the number of BFIs in the given size of geography and economy definitely is. Large number of BFIs would mean more amounts of capital accumulated in smaller chunks as fixed assets and capital of the banks that could have been invested in other productive areas. So far, we have not seen banks investing in large projects and making long term investments. This would be possible when banks with strong capital base emerge. It is highly unlikely to happen when capital is spread across more than 30 commercial banks. It is always better to have 10 large banks than having 30 small incapable ones. At the moment, number of problematic BFIs is also increasing. Merger and acquisition should ensure merger of two or more companies into one to make a single strong and capable bank. However, so far, we have not seen merger of two commercial banks. </p> <p> It is argued that if the number of commercial banks comes down, they will be involved in carteling. The central bank should keep an eye to prevent such irregularities. But, when two commercial banks merge, one of the foremost impacts is the large capital base. This makes possible to invest in large projects and create a ground for long term investment which is missing at the moment. The development so far in the merger and acquisition is encouraging but I think it should reach the next level soon. </p> <p> <em>- Sambida Sharma, Balkumari</em></p> <hr /> <p> <strong>Summer Market Trends </strong></p> <p> As the writer argues in ‘Summer Market 2013’ (Vol. 12 Issue 8 of New Business Age), growing urbanisation and popularity of nuclear families have played their part in giving certain products a boost in the market. However, I believe that these factors are not the only contributors. I think that purchasing power plays a more important role in determining consumption pattern. Fuelled by remittances, purchasing power has been on the rise in Nepal. This has driven up consumption. </p> <p> <em>- Bhimsen Bharati, Kapan</em></p> <hr /> <p> <strong>HELVETAS Partner in Sustainable Development </strong></p> <p> I went through the Development- Partner story about HELVETAS in June 2013 issue. The story revolves around the positive work of the organisation. What it is doing for the benefits of the Nepali people is really encouraging. However, the article failed to provide details about more of its activities. I would have loved to know more about the projects of HELVETAS in detail. For example, about their target areas and people and the extent of the benefits it has created and also the negative impacts it may have caused. It would make the story a more interesting read if views of beneficiaries too were incorporated. </p> <p> <em>- Sushil Chhetri, Budhanilkantha</em></p> <hr /> <p> <strong>Bit of Entertainment Business </strong></p> <p> I have been reading your magazine regularly and I appreciate your efforts to create a business-literate readership. It is good to see that your media is covering different issues related to business and economy. It would also be appreciable if you also could write about entertainment business. I think that would make the magazine more fascinating to read, and will attract young readers too. </p> <p> <em>- Santosh Dhungana, Chabahil</em></p> <hr /> <p> <strong>Century of Indian Cinema </strong></p> <p> When the Indian cinema was celebrating its centenary, it had already collected non-Indian audience base from a number of countries. The Indian cinema or the movie industry popularly known as Bollywood is one of the largest entertainment industries in terms of number of movies produced every year. Though it may have surpassed Hollywood’s annual production, it is yet to equalise in terms of revenues collected. From the South Asian perspective, small entertainment industries like that of Nepal could learn a lot from the burgeoning industry next door. But, most of the countries in South Asia have put a ban on Indian cinemas for a long time. Even Nepal had made numerous attempts in the past to ban Hindi cinema. But in absence of quality cinemas produced locally and the access to foreign movies through the satellite televisions, Internet and pirated cheap DVDs, the attempt always remained a failed one as the viewers were never ready for the ban to be imposed. Similar was the situation in other neighbouring countries. There is a huge lack of creativity in the local cinema industry, and instead of getting inspired from the neighbouring industry- the Nepali Film industry has been limited to copying Bollywood, that too badly. There is a lot to learn from a century long experience of Indian cinema and adopt the technology and techniques of storytelling they use rather than merely copying some scenes and dialogues. The neighbouring countries can learn from Indian movie industry the techniques to find a space among global audience. </p> <p> </p> <p> -<em> Prabhat Dhakal, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu</em></p> <div> <div> <hr /> <span style="font-size:11px;"><em>Mail your feedback to P O Box 14197, Kathmandu or Email to <a href="mailto:editor@newbusinessage.com?subject=Re%3AFeedback%20July%202013">editor@newbusinessage.com</a></em></span></div> <div> <span style="font-size:11px;"><em>The mail will be edited for the purpose of clarity and brevity.</em></span> <hr /> </div> </div> <div> </div>', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2013-07-19', 'modified' => '2013-07-19', 'keywords' => 'new business age feedback news & articles, feedback news & articles from new business age nepal, feedback headlines from nepal, current and latest feedback news from nepal, economic news from nepal, nepali feedback economic news and events, ongoing feedback news of nepal', 'description' => 'The number of banks and financial institutions (BFI) Nepal has, is by no means small for the size of the economy and geography. This has helped create a fertile ground for high-end and branded products. This shows that high-end consumers are increasing in the market. Likewise, it is also true that people now have more options to choose from -- depending upon their purchasing capacity. However, it is also a fact that the gap between the rich and poor is also widening. This in the market scenario implies that the people around and below the poverty line are kept away from the growing market. Living in the same society, the market that is close to rich people becomes a distant land for them. It is also because the marketers target rich people at the cost of poor ones. It is more difficult for the middle class who neither can downgrade their lifestyle nor can afford an upgrade. Living with limited resources amid soaring prices, customers are always anxious about the future. For the working class, it is even more difficult as their income growth does not match the soaring inflation. Could your magazines carry a regular feature that helps the reader to understand the difference between pursuing success and excellence? The writer said that the cult status earned by KFC can be credited to its logo. It’s not true. There are many other factors which contribute to gain cult status. Logo is a very small part of it. If you look at other cult brands like Apple or Harley Davidson, it is not just the about logo, it’s the culture, personality and some other factors which make them cult brands. And overall, I do not agree with you that KFC has cult status. We refer cult brands as those which have very strong community that defends the brand and often fans refuse to buy competitor brands. In the case of KFC, there is nothing like that. In developed countries, people go to KFC for tasty and cheap food and in country like ours, people go to KFC to have tasty food and to show off or impress their peers. There is nothing like people going to KFC are die-hard fans of KFC. Anyway that’s my point of view (maybe wrong) but I still wrote what I thought about. In the Nepali context, not only these factors have been contributing to the growing level of consumption of both FMCGs (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) and durables. The increasing remittance from migrant workers potentially goes for consumption too. Consumption is naturally the top priority for the families of the migrant workers with a humble economic background. However, it is important to note that these consumers are not considered to be brand conscious. Urban dwellers and, especially, the youths are the ones concerned and lured by the flashy brand names. </p> <p> Various well known global brands have their presence in Nepal in different product categories. The festive seasons are the moments when there is an opportunity for these brands to potentially increase sales, more than in “normal days.” Consumers also want to make festivals a special occasion by shopping new goods. The New Year 2070 seems to be the perfect occasion: customers buy more and sellers try to sell more as well. To make this happen, business get involved in aggressive marketing strategies. This is an attempt to create a win-win situation for both.</p> <p> <strong>Sangam Khadka, Baneshwor</strong></p>', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2013-05-22', 'modified' => '0000-00-00', 'keywords' => 'New Year Hues, Feedback, New Business Age', 'description' => 'The rise of the middle and upper middle class and the growing income this sector of the society enjoys definitely have increased consumeriism. I believe that the reading habit of today’s youth is oriented towards byte sized articles. Additionally, articles could be more attractive and easier to comprehend with the use of graphics. Enlivening the contents in such a manner would be a challenge for contributory guest articles, but if the magazine could offer a way to do it and the approval from the author, the suggested improvements could be achieved. </p> <p> I think that the core readers of this magazine are young executives and management students. What they really crave for is information - latest trends, developments, concepts, models… etc. I wonder, is it possible to feature an exec-summary with every issue that touches 5 to 10 important points under various categories For example, these could be latest concepts in H.R., governance, CSR, marketing, branding orleadership. Each point could be a 3-4 liner as in intro. The reader can do research by him or herself if the subject is relevant.</p> <p> I believe that any educational forum or magazine (like this one) has a dual role to play: pass on domain knowledge and also imbibe certain values and attributes that make humans better. After all, the quality of a human being defines the way he or she operates in a value-challenged environment. Could your magazines carry a regular feature that helps the reader to understand the difference between pursuing success and excellence? Is the publication group into creating experiential platforms that bring alive the various theories propounded in these magazines? Such activities would extend the value chain and would go a long way to create domain leadership. </p> <p> <strong>Manosh R. In a condition where tourism is not yet at a peak, the domestic market for aviation in Nepal is still untapped and some rural destinations can be developed that can be reached more conveniently by air than by land. Airlines have been facing problems in generating profits because of the high operational cost and inadequate capital base. In the current situation, as Manandhar suggests, it would be wise to merge airline companies. That would increase the fleet size, the capital base and the reach.
