Trolley buses – once a major means of transportation – are now confined to the history books. The rope lines of the eco-friendly trolley buses are still visible in the core areas of Kathmandu. As the buses are dumped in the junkyard, the dream of Kathmanduities to ride trolley buses is not possible anytime soon.

The trolley bus service was started in 1975 in the capital with a grant of Rs 40 million from the Chinese government. During the initial period, 22 trolley buses operated from Tripureshwar to Surya Binayak, Bhaktapur. In 1996, additional ten trolley buses operated in different routes of the capital. But, in 2008, the service came to an abrupt end.

Knowledgeable sources say power-cuts were the main reason behind the fall out of trolley buses in the capital.

Meanwhile, the eighth five-year plan (1992-1997) of the National Planning Commission had proposed expanding the routes of trolley bus service from Tripureshwar to Kirtipur, and Thapathali to Pulchowk via Patandhoka. But the plan could not materialize.

After the unofficial blockade by the Indian government in 2015, the then prime minister KP Sharma Oli had announced to revive the bus service. But, later the government itself scrapped the committee formed to promote trolley bus service in the country.

The Asian Development Bank had also publicized a report to operate new trolley bus service in the capital.

But, the report was also not implemented.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9971', 'image' => '20190305024045__MG_0380.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10204', 'article_category_id' => '266', 'title' => 'Century Bank Conducts Cleanliness Campaign on Shivaratri', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'March 5: Century Commercial Bank conducted a cleanliness program on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.', 'content' => '
March 5: Century Commercial Bank conducted a cleanliness program on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.

All the four branches of the commercial bank situated in Chitwan conducted the cleanliness program to clean the Shiva Temple in Laurighaur of Ratnanagar Municipality on March 4.

The bank in a statement said that the campaign was a part of its corporate social responsibility.

Surendra Bhandari, branch manager of Tadi branch said that the branches in Chitwan had joined hands to clean the temple premises and distributed drinking water to the pilgrims on Maha Shivaratri.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9970', 'image' => '20190305022705_century2.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => false, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 14 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10203', 'article_category_id' => '266', 'title' => 'Kritika Upreti, Rajendra Tamang Declared The Next Face of Nepalgunj', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'March 5: Kritika Upreti and Rajendra Tamang have been declared the winners of ‘The Next Face of Nepalgunj 2019’.', 'content' => '
March 5: Kritika Upreti and Rajendra Tamang have been declared the winners of ‘The Next Face of Nepalgunj 2019’.

The duo defeated 17 other contestants to win the title of the maiden contest organised recently by The Three Cheers Events.

According to the organisers, Upreti and Tamang were selected as the winners for the use of recycled dress made of paper, plastic and other waste products.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9969', 'image' => '20190305021312_kirtika.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => false, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ) ) $current_user = null $logged_in = falsesimplexml_load_file - [internal], line ?? include - APP/View/Elements/side_bar.ctp, line 60 View::_evaluate() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 971 View::_render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 933 View::_renderElement() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 1224 View::element() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 418 include - APP/View/Articles/index.ctp, line 157 View::_evaluate() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 971 View::_render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 933 View::render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 473 Controller::render() - CORE/Cake/Controller/Controller.php, line 968 Dispatcher::_invoke() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 200 Dispatcher::dispatch() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 167 [main] - APP/webroot/index.php, line 117

But, the report was also not implemented.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9971', 'image' => '20190305024045__MG_0380.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10204', 'article_category_id' => '266', 'title' => 'Century Bank Conducts Cleanliness Campaign on Shivaratri', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'March 5: Century Commercial Bank conducted a cleanliness program on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9970', 'image' => '20190305022705_century2.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => false, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 14 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10203', 'article_category_id' => '266', 'title' => 'Kritika Upreti, Rajendra Tamang Declared The Next Face of Nepalgunj', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'March 5: Kritika Upreti and Rajendra Tamang have been declared the winners of ‘The Next Face of Nepalgunj 2019’.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9969', 'image' => '20190305021312_kirtika.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => false, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ) ) $current_user = null $logged_in = false $xml = falseinclude - APP/View/Elements/side_bar.ctp, line 133 View::_evaluate() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 971 View::_render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 933 View::_renderElement() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 1224 View::element() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 418 include - APP/View/Articles/index.ctp, line 157 View::_evaluate() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 971 View::_render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 933 View::render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 473 Controller::render() - CORE/Cake/Controller/Controller.php, line 968 Dispatcher::_invoke() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 200 Dispatcher::dispatch() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 167 [main] - APP/webroot/index.php, line 117

But, the report was also not implemented.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9971', 'image' => '20190305024045__MG_0380.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10204', 'article_category_id' => '266', 'title' => 'Century Bank Conducts Cleanliness Campaign on Shivaratri', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'March 5: Century Commercial Bank conducted a cleanliness program on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9970', 'image' => '20190305022705_century2.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => false, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 14 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '10203', 'article_category_id' => '266', 'title' => 'Kritika Upreti, Rajendra Tamang Declared The Next Face of Nepalgunj', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'March 5: Kritika Upreti and Rajendra Tamang have been declared the winners of ‘The Next Face of Nepalgunj 2019’.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-03-05', 'modified' => '2019-03-05', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9969', 'image' => '20190305021312_kirtika.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-03-05 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => false, 'in_scroller' => null, 'user_id' => '20' ) ) ) $current_user = null $logged_in = false $xml = falsesimplexml_load_file - [internal], line ?? include - APP/View/Elements/side_bar.ctp, line 133 View::_evaluate() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 971 View::_render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 933 View::_renderElement() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 1224 View::element() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 418 include - APP/View/Articles/index.ctp, line 157 View::_evaluate() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 971 View::_render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 933 View::render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 473 Controller::render() - CORE/Cake/Controller/Controller.php, line 968 Dispatcher::_invoke() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 200 Dispatcher::dispatch() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 167 [main] - APP/webroot/index.php, line 117
