Two decades ago, in 1992 AD, the tyre was rolled in the domestic market with its popular tag line “Aayo Gorakhkali Tyre”. Gorakhkali Rubber Udyog Ltd (GRUL) established in 1985, introduced the tyre in the market only after seven years of its establishment. </div> <div> </div> <div> Named after the famous temple ‘Gorakh Kali’ of Gorkha, the brand name also represents the reliable and committed services of the Gurkhas. It was introduced as a brand committed to provide quality product and service that keeps up to the expectations of the consumers and to the standards of the market. </div> <div> </div> <div> With an aim to fulfil national demand of tyres and substituting import of tyres in the country, GRUL was established on 29 December 1985 under the Nepal Company Act 2021 as a Public-Private-ADB venture backed by the Government of Nepal. The production plant of GRUL and most of its technical front was supported by China. Currently, the Government of Nepal and its entities have a majority of shares in the company.</div> <div> </div> <div> GRUL have a capacity of producing around 84000 heavy automobile and 40000 light commercial and passenger car tyres. Currently it is producing 12 types of truck tyres and 13 types of non-truck tyres that comply with ISI standards in terms of quality and technology.</div> <div> </div> <div> Bias tyres, manufactured by the company, are especially made for vehicles that run on hilly roads. This tyre gives 25,000-30,000 mileage and can be resoled twice. The company imports its major raw materials, rubbers and various chemicals, from international market. </div> <div> </div> <div> Dinesh Kumar Bartaula, Acting General Manager of the company, shares that presently the company is producing only 40% of its total capacity due to working capital constraints.</div> <div> </div> <div> He said that Gorakhkali Tyres were exported to Sri Lanka and Thailand during 1999-2000. But the exports were stopped as the company had to sell at a price that did not yield any profit. Another reason for stopping the export, Bartaula said, was the steadily increasing demand for the tyre within the country itself. </div> <div> </div> <div> Gorakhkali Tyres cost has been revisited time and again. Bartaula shares that it has been difficult for the product to sustain in the market due to steep competition with radial tyres. While radial tyres are suitable for sophisticated urban roads, bias tyres produced by Gorakhkali Tyres, are suitable for hilly roads. </div> <div> </div> <div> “GRUL once had monopoly in the tyre market and dominated it, but the scenario has changed now. It’s difficult to compete with radial tyres”, he said. “Presently the company doesn’t have enough capital to produce radial tyres,” he shared adding that it is hard for the product to compete with cheap Indian tyres, that are manufactured at relatively </div> <div> lower cost. </div> <div> </div> <div> Though Gorakhkali tyre had earned good brand reputation among consumers for more than two decade, the brand is suffering from financial losses for the last few years. Bartaula points to political intervention as one of the major reason for the company’s present standing. </div> <div> </div> <div> Despite odds, Bartaula is hopeful that the company will continue sustaining its brand image and market reputation in the days ahead.</div>', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2014-01-21', 'modified' => '2014-01-27', 'keywords' => 'the corporate weekly from Nepal, nepali corporate events – news – interviews – reviews, nepali corporate focus, nepali corporate status and news, news from nepali corporate industry, corporate happenings – events – news from nepal', 'description' => 'Gorakhkali Tyre is Nepal’s first automobile tyre. India’s Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, inaugurated the new Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) on 10 January 2014, expanding the airport’s capacity to more than 40 million passengers per year. The new terminal has four storeys and covers a total area of almost 409,000 square metres m². It will operate 24 hours a day, combining both international and domestic passenger services under one roof. Constructed in an X shape, the new T2 is designed to consolidate airport operations and reduce walking distances for passengers. Three symmetrical concourses fan out from a central area, theoretically making it easier for passengers to transfer between domestic and international flights. The design was inspired by traditional Indian pavilions. Terminal 2 also uses a special type of glass that filters the sun’s rays and controls the balance of natural light throughout the day. Skylights placed above the check-in hall will also reduce the terminal’s energy consumption by 23 per cent. The farmers are arguing that the price offered by the sugar mills is far below their cost; and demanding a higher rate. The mill owners have their take: as the sugar price volatility is high, it would be unfeasible for them to meet the farmers’ demands. Both arguments have valid underpinnings.</div> <div> </div> <div> The reference price for both buyers and sellers of sugarcane in Nepal has been the neighbouring Indian states of Utter Pradesh and Bihar. Buyers here offer the price at par to their Indian counterparts. But, this price hardly attracts the Nepali farmers as their production cost is much higher than their Indian friends. India has massive farm and input subsidies effective. In desperate situations, government ventures to buy the product. They have better mass-scale cold storage facilities to wait for off-season high price sells. On the contrary, the energy and labour prices here are higher, electricity supply and irrigation facilities are unstable, thus costly. Other infrastructures like warehousing are in acute short supply. The farmers are forced to sell their sugarcane at the price offered by the mills as they have no alternatives. Besides, the sugarcane has a huge transportation cost to explore market in greater distances. In Nepal, the government support to the farmers is almost nil.</div> <div> </div> <div> On the buyer side, the special feature of seasonality in sugar production is a challenge. They must employ all their resources in this season. High demand of workers adds cost of production and the practice of hedging the base price throughout the year is not even contemplated in our context. Nepal’s sugar pricing is largely affected by the Indian price trends. Therefore, Nepali producers’ may be sandwiched between the high prices of sugarcane here and over production and supply of sugar in India.</div> <div> </div> <div> The situation is indeed dire and warrants a lasting solution to this annually recurrent problem. In the open market economy, it is not advisable to invite an outright, continuous and equally effective government intervention. But, as long as government continues to subsidise in inputs and facilities, there is no harm that it does the same for the sugarcane as well. But, more lasting solutions should be explored from the market mechanism itself. And, there is ample scope for it.</div> <div> </div> <div> One of the bones of contention of the price rigidity of the sugarcane is ever impending sugar price volatility. This can be best addressed by price hedging of both sugarcane and sugar, at least in the yearly range. The newly developed commodities futures market of Nepal can be instrumental in it. Or, it can be made so. Implementing the already enacted Secured Transaction Registry Act and validation of warehouse receipts for bank financing can be highly supportive to this initiative. If the government can’t afford to invest to set-up sufficient warehouses, it must work to create the environment for private investment for the same.</div> <div> </div> <div> The second strategy could be market-scoping of sugar, and price-difference support. We have almost convincing data that Nepali sugar produce can only meet about forty percent of the Nepali demand. And, sixty percent of imported sugar invariably has a higher market price for obvious reasons. In such a scenario, government can easily figure out how much the country annually spends on sugar, and what price per unit for. On this basis, government can set a reference price for both sugarcane and sugar. In the year end, instead of indiscriminately subsidising on inputs or incentivizing the producers, government can choose to subsidise only the price difference between the base and market prices. This can work both ways. Even if the producers charge much higher rate than the base price and earn larger profits, it can be arranged such that some portion of it goes to the farmers.</div> <div> </div> <div> Since sugarcane is a special kind of seasonal crop, it needs special policy attention. </div>', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2014-01-10', 'modified' => '2014-01-21', 'keywords' => 'new business age from the editor news & articles, from the editor news & articles from new business age nepal, from the editor headlines from nepal, current and latest from the editor news from nepal, economic news from nepal, nepali from the editor economic news and events, ongoing from the edi', 'description' => 'The price dispute between the sugar mill owners and the sugarcane-producing farmers, like in the past years, has resurfaced, again. I have been here for the last six months. When I joined, the bank was already a name to be reckoned with. It has built a good reputation and a niche for itself in the market. My first effort was to maintain that and the second, to take it forward. So, reflecting now, I think I have been successful in retaining & enhancing the reputation of the bank. By the time I complete my first year here, the bank will have added more value to its service and reputation. </div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Everest Bank had last year started an agro-specialised branch ‘Krishi Udhyam Bikash Sakha’ in Rajbiraj. How is this branch doing?</strong></span></div> <div> The branch is doing well. When other banks were not even thinking of agriculture, Everest Bank was the first one to act and went to the extent of opening a specialized branch for agriculture financing. The branch is operating well and has made lots of finances in the agricultural sector. However, we have not restricted ourselves to that branch only. We are doing agricultural financing in other branches through cooperatives and in some cases, directly to farmers also. We understand that agriculture’s role the Nepali economy is paramount and that is why we are focusing on it. </div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>You talked about expanding agro-specialization to other branches as well. Which branches have this specialization?</strong></span></div> <div> We have already started it in Biratnagar, Narayanghat and Birtamod. We are financing it through cooperatives and they are doing very well.</div> <div> </div> <div> Your Bank had also started a scheme to provide free debit card to school children through Freedom Account. How would you evaluate this scheme?</div> <div> Our freedom account is doing very well. Besides that, we also have Nari Bachat Khata for women. So, these schemes are basically tailor-made for specific segments of the society taking care of their specific needs. All our branches are promoting these schemes. They are operating very successfully.</div> <div> </div> <div> Freedom Account is an account that requires a minimum of only 100 rupees and it gives children the freedom to use debit card. There are more than 15 thousand accounts under the Freedom Account. Overall, Freedom Account is running very well and we are planning to come up with more of such products for other segments of the society.</div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) is pursuing to implement its plan to introduce interest rate spread restriction on banks, despite opposition from the bankers. What is your stance on this?</strong></span></div> <div> As far as our bank is concerned, we are operating on the prescribed spread only. Thus, it is not such a big issue for us. There is no question of Bankers opposing any directive of the Central bank; it is just a feeling being conveyed that their profitability may be affected if they are restricted. If a bank wants to open a new branch, they have to go for additional staff for that branch. The branch will definitely take some time to come into profit. Banks open new branches to expand their reach and unless their branches are opened in all the corners of the country, financial inclusion will not take place. </div> <div> </div> <div> Similarly, all the money that the bank raises from the public is not going to be put into advance. In fact, only 80 per cent of the amount that banks raise from the public can be given the shape for advances. But, what about the remaining 20 percent which hardly earns any return, So, that 20 percent needs also to be taken into account for calculating any spread. </div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Now, the banking sector is flooded with excess liquidity. How is the latest situation in Everest Bank?</strong></span></div> <div> Due to increase in the value of US$ and also elections extra liquidity is there with the Banks. When there is any kind of instability in the economy, people don’t want to invest or expand. They look for the opportune time. That is also the reason that the credit off-take gets affected. If there is no credit off-take, it is obvious that the banks will have more liquidity. I think it will take around 2 months for the system to absorb the liquidity because by then, entrepreneurs will be confident to invest in new ventures or expand the existing business and the economy will be stable. </div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>What sets Everest Bank apart from all the existing banks in Nepal?</strong></span></div> <div> As of now, Everest Bank is looked upon as a very strong bank. The strength lies not only from the deposits we have and the advances we make, but also from our transparent decision making process. We also try to evaluate all the projects sincerely so that the incidence of default is reduced. Secondly, our staff is very friendly and courteous. They provide the best possible service to the customers and are always open for improvement. As a result of this, there is a constant relationship between the customers and the banks. Wherever I go, I find people who say that they started banking with Everest Bank since inception and that they find no reason to go elsewhere. So, that is the strength. Satisfied Customers and courteous staff are our biggest strength. It is the result of this that the bank did very well last year. We did a business of more than 10,000 crores with a profit of more than two hundred forty crores which is an achievement by itself.</div> <div> </div> <div> Another thing is our involvement in CSR activities. We provided free drinking water facility at Geta Eye Hospital in Dhangadhi and also at Janaki Mandir, Janakpur and also provided digital display and monitor at Pashupatinath Temple. We supported the flood victims of Western region and have been organizing free health checkup camps every year. Besides we have sponsored number of awards to encourage schools, colleges, sportsmen, music, culture and health professionals in their pursuit for excellence. All in all, we are very sincere and alive about our CSR activities.</div>', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2014-01-06', 'modified' => '2014-01-20', 'keywords' => 'the corporate weekly from Nepal, nepali corporate events – news – interviews – reviews, nepali corporate focus, nepali corporate status and news, news from nepali corporate industry, corporate happenings – events – news from nepal', 'description' => 'Founded in 1994, Everest Bank is one of the leading banks of Nepal. However, this increased volume in the last two months has helped Nepse as well as RSI maintain them in higher levels. </div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD)</strong></span></div> <div> The MACD is a momentum oscillator formed by using two different types of moving averages which provides specific buying or selling signals. The MACD line reached its highest point of 48.31 on December 22, 2013 and has been trending lower since. On December 31, 2013, the MACD line breached the signal line and crossed below which triggered a sell signal to market participants. In the past trading week, the MACD line has been moving towards the signal line. If the MACD line crosses above the signal line in the near future, it would present a buy signal. However, if there is no change in the current trend, it may signal further decline in Nepse. </div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Market Summary </strong></span></div> <div> <strong>(As of January 16, 2014)</strong></div> <div> <strong>Close:</strong> 794.64</div> <div> <strong>High: </strong>794.64 </div> <div> <strong>Weekly Change:</strong> 21.88 (2.83%) </div> <div> <strong>Daily Average Turnover: </strong>NPR 387.02 Million </div> <div> <strong>Total Weekly: </strong>NPR 1548.10 Million </div> <div> <strong>Immediate Support: </strong>753.17</div> <div> <strong>Immediate: </strong>806.82</div> <div> <strong>Relative Strength Index (RSI): </strong>70.60</div> <div> <strong>Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD): </strong>23.78 and 27.02</div>', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2014-01-20', 'modified' => '2014-01-27', 'keywords' => 'the corporate weekly from Nepal, nepali corporate events – news – interviews – reviews, nepali corporate focus, nepali corporate status and news, news from nepali corporate industry, corporate happenings – events – news from nepal', 'description' => 'The RSI remained in the overbought zone from November 11, 2013 to December 29, 2013 reaching as high as 92.77 on November 24, 2013. It was the highest tax payer among commercial banks for the fiscal year 2068/2069. The bank has also been awarded the Asian paints New Biz award for being the Best Managed Bank. In an interview with The Corporate, <strong>A.K Ahluwalia</strong>, the CEO of Everest Bank talked about his journey with the bank for the past six months and about the bank’s present and future status. <strong>Excerpts:</strong></span></div> <div> </div> <div> <span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>How do you evaluate your work so far in Everest Bank?</strong></span></div> <div> First of all, I would like to wish all the readers a very Happy New Year. With the business of above Rs 10,000 crores, this bank has been able to maintain 3rd position in terms of net profit.
