January 31: Transport entrepreneurs and agents of Kolkata have been staging protests in the capital of West Bengal since Tuesday following the Indian authorities’ approval to transport goods brought from third countries directly to the border of Nepal from Kolkata’s port via railway containers.

The protests were held after the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) of India decided to remove the paperwork for goods imported by Nepali traders.

The customs office of Kolkata Port has circulated a notice to remove the paperwork for goods to be transported to Nepal via railway effective from February 15. The port authorities have decided to adopt the electronic cargo tracking system (ECTS) instead of the paperwork. This has threatened the business of the local transport entrepreneurs. Hence, the middlemen who will face loss in business due to this decision took to the streets. The protests which started on Tuesday continued on Wednesday as well.

The protesters have threatened to obstruct the railway service if the CBIC does not revoke its decision before February 15.
