July 29: KCC Exhibit-2018 has concluded in Kathmandu on a high note on Sunday, July 29. A seminar on “Smart City for Sustainable Development” was held on the second day of the exhibition organised by Kantipur City College (KCC).  

The seminar was inaugurated by the Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology at Purbanchal University (PU), Prof Dr Subh Narayan Pathak by watering plants. Pathak said, “The exhibition has provided a platform to share knowledge and idea among students. These types of activities are beneficial to the students and should be made included in undergraduate courses.”

Senior Director at Nepal Telecommunication Authority Anand Raj Khanal also delivered keynote speech on the growing trend and importance of information communication and technology (ICT) for the local development.

“ICT is an industry in itself. The ICT sector has grown in such a way that it has become an important part of our daily lives. The government should make robust infrastructure, creating application and contents for wider expansion of the sector. Wireless service is the solution to Nepal’s complex topography. So, the government should create momentum in achieving sustainable development goals.”

Pralhad Karki, managing director of KCC, shared information about the exhibition.  “We had conducted the last edition of the exhibition in 2006. We were not able to conduct this programme in between because of various problems,” shared Karki. He further said, “We organised the programme after 12 years to build up the capacity of students to work for the society, environment and economy which are very important components for sustainable development.”

Likewise, Sanjaya Uprety, programme director at MSc in Energy Efficient Buildings Department of Architecture, Institute of Engineering at Tribhuvan University also shared his ideas, experiences and knowledge about smart city.  He said, “Smart energy is the key to smart city. There is exponential growth of urbanization around the world.  Technology will be the biggest revolution today after industrial revolution contributing entrepreneurship, industries, education and every system.”

The other speakers of the programme were Manish Pokharel, HoD of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Kathmandu Univerity, Dilip Pratap Khand, Mayor of Waling Municipality Syangia, Binayak Krishna Thapa.
