In the current fiscal year, government-owned Nepal Telecom is investing the biggest amount. It alone will invest Rs 10 billion for the expansion of the network and better quality of its services targeting to bring 2.2 million people inside its network. “Around 1.8 million GSM mobiles will be distributed this year,” said Surendra Thike, the spokesperson of the company. Telecom aims to take ADSL internet to 75 districts of Nepal within a year. “Our priority now is to improve the quality along with the network expansion. For this, we are adding mobile towers and base transceiver station (BTS),” said Thike.
Spice Nepal, a private telecom company which recently changed to Ncell Pvt Ltd, has several plans on cards to take the company to the first position. “We will invest US $ 100 million in 2011 to achieve our goals,” said Pasi Koistinen in a program organized in the Valley. The company claims to have 3.2 million customers.Smart Telecom, the company with basic focus on rural
areas, is planning to invest US $ 1.7 million this year. “Our goal is to expand customer network along with quality improvement,” said Subash Bajracharya, the chief executive officer of the company. The company will install 127 BTS this year.
STM Telecom, operating in Eastern region, is increasing the coverage this year. “We will distribute 0.1 million mobile service within a year,” said Suyas Pradhan, the assistant manager of the company. STM is coming up with more than a billion of the capital.Nepal Satellite, operating in Western and Midwestern region so far, is intending to bring people of Far-western region inside its network. It is also investing more than a billion rupees this year, said the company source.
Similarly, UTL also has some aggressive plans for this year. Three Indian partners of the company who hold 80 per cent stake are investing billions of rupees. With this, two more companies are lobbying to get the license to step into telecommunication industry. Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) now allows telecom companies to operate overall services. This flexibility seems to attract investors to invest in the telecommunication industry.
