U.S. Partnership For A Transforming Nepal

1 min 22 sec to read

US Ambassador Scott DeLisi has said that development assistance alone cannot improve the lives of Nepalis. Addressing a programme ‘US partnership for a transforming Nepal’ organised by Central Department of Political Science, Tribhuvan University, he said it is the private sector and not international donors that will transform Nepal’s economy and create opportunities for the Nepali youth.
DeLisi also said that when one sees Nepalis queuing up at the Foreign Ministry every day for passports, one cannot help but feel depressed by the large number of young people choosing to leave their homes to work abroad. He added, “We want to help the private sector create jobs that are so desperately needed.”
One of the USAID initiatives will invest US $ 30 million over three years to help strengthen Nepal’s trade competitiveness, expand exports and make the agricultural more efficient, he said and requested to have labour law reforms so that politicallylinked labour unions cannot cripple economic growth. Noting that Nepal has enacted a new trade policy in response to economic changes that have occurred in recent years, both inside and outside the country, he said, “This new policy is well positioned to strengthen trade ties with the United States as well as other countries because it addresses new economic realities.” The updated trade policy aims to promote new exportable goods of comparative advantage, in partnership.
