March 13: Nepal has imported Rs 209.7 million worth of almond in seven months of the current FY. Despite having extreme potential in producing almond in Nepal, it has been importing almond from foreign countries including USA, China, India and UAE. According to the statistics of Customs Department, Nepal imported 294,800 kgs of almond during the review period.

In the year 2013, a study was conducted on technical and financial possibility of cultivating almond in Nepal. The study concluded that high mountainous region from 1,200 to 3,200 meters of various districts are suitable for its cultivation in terms of geographical structure and climate. “The almond plantation that was done three years ago in Lwangha, Kaski is still germinating,” said Kusum Parajuli, co-coordinator of the study group.

Experts viewed that due to geographical structure and favorable climate, cultivation of almond is highly potential in Nepal. However, lack of professional training and government subsidy along with higher cost of almond plant has constrained expansion of its cultivation. Almond is a rich source of Vitamin E, Protein and Calcium. It is also used on various medication purposes. Since almond is highly demanded all over the world, it can be exported if it is produced in the country, opine businessmen.
