December 21: Since few years, manufacturing and sales of 'smoking pipe' is gradually increasing in Nepal. Such products are manufactured under the handicraft category, according to a source. As per the statistics of Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal, Nepal export handicraft products worth of Rs 4-5 billion annually. Smoking pipe is one of the exported items of Nepal. According to the source, its export however is not conducted through the corporate procedure.

Nepal itself is a big market for these smoking pipes. The market of these smoking pipes, usually used to consume tobacco, is of Rs 1 billion and above, opined the source. The traders assumed that the entrepreneurs manufacturing glass smoking pipes transact the amount from both domestic and international market. A small industry with only 10 craftsmen can transact over Rs 1.5 billion a year from the smoking pipes, said an industrialist.

"Previously, more than 150 companies used to manufacture smoking pipes in Nepal. However, the number has reduced to 90 after the devastating earthquake and border blockade of the last year," said Madhusudan Pandey, Vice-President of Nepal Glass Pipe Association. He added "With a decrease in number of industry, export has also decreased by 40 per cent." According to him, these industries are operating from home without registration.

The primary market of these products manufactured from glass and borosil tube and colour is America, informed the traders. Other than that, it has high demand in various countries of Europe and Japan as well. However, export of these products is not done through corporate procedure. The industrialist sends these products through courier service by contacting the buyers personally. According to the source, these smoking pipes are sent as showpieces in America, the primary market, due to the aggravating export procedure.  Moreover, the industrialist complain that the cheaper smoking pipes from India and China, lack of skilled manpower, regulatory complications, ignorance of the government  and various other factors are hindering the growth of the industry.
