November 4: The business expansion of precious stone diamond in recent times has affected the business of gold and silver. It is shown by the statistics of import of precious metals and gems through formal medium along with the statistics of custom revenue department.  According to the statistics of Department of Custom (DoC), the import of gold and silver has declined while the import of diamond has risen in the first quarter of the current FY in compare to the corresponding period of last FY.

However, the government officials cited the decrease in import of gold and silver to the control of illegal transaction and not the contraction of the market. “The import of gold and silver has declined due to Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) provision of not allowing Nepali passengers to bring raw gold while returning from abroad,” says Shishir Kumar Dhungana, General Director of DoC. He added that NRB's tighten policy, control in smuggling and surveillance of Department of Revenue Investigation has caused the decline in the import on gold and silver.

In the first quarter of FY 2016/17, the import of gold and silver has been dwindled by 27.48 percent and 45.67 percent respectively. Meanwhile the statistics reveals that the import of diamond has increased by 13.21 percent in the same period.
