August 8: The indefinite closure of Unilever Nepal Limited has ended with a three point agreement between the workers and management of the company.

A meeting was held at the District Administration Office on Sunday between the workers, management, labour office and local political leaders which led to agreement between the two parties.  According to the agreement, the factory management has agreed to reinstate seven workers who were suspended earlier. “Moreover, further decision about providing a ‘residential fund ‘to the workers will be soon solved within one month,” said Nawaraj Aryal, President of Makwanpur Industry Association.

The meeting was attended by Rajkumar Neupane, President of Makwanpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nawaraj Aryal, Makwanpur Industries Association. Similarly,  Abhijeet Mukhopadhyaya, Manager of Unilever Industry, Sumit Dhar, HR Manager of Unilever Industry, Shyam Shrestha, Hetauda Labor Office Chief were also presented in the meeting. Likewise,  Trade Union representatives Lal Krishna Pyakurel, Jayram Dhital and Janga Bahadur Bika also participated the meeting.

“The strike ended with an agreement that the workers won’t be allowed to strike for next two years,” said President Aryal.

Earlier, the management informed about the industrial closure through a notice on Sunday morning. According to Mukhopadhyaya, it will take some time for resuming the factory to normal operation. “ We expect a direction from the headquarter by this Thursday,” he said.

The workers had been holding the strike since last 28 days blaming the management of breaking the three point agreement which had taken place on May 29.

The management of Unilever said the company has to face a loss of Rs five million in one day closure. Established in 1993, the factory produces products like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, surf. It has provided employment to round 208 workers.
