July 22: Ncell has supported three villages of Syangja in safe drinking water and commercial agriculture. Issuing a press statement, Ncell informed that the support has relieved the local residents especially women from the hassle of fetching drinking water that took many hours and contributed to increase their earnings.

The support which was initiated as a part of Ncell’s corporate social responsibility has been provided to 75 households of Eladi, Dipka and Thuladi villages of Syanga district.

Ncell has helped each village to install a Hydraulic Ram Pump and develop water distribution channels and tap stands to provide water directly to the whole village. The local residents used to face problems including high dependency on subsistence agriculture, poor nutrition and sanitation due to the lack of a reliable water source. With the help of Ncell, the locals are now producing fruits and vegetables in the villages as well.

According to Milan Sharma, corporate communication expert of Ncell, the local residents have been provided trainings for commercial farming and micro-enterprises. He said “The company has managed the channels to supply the agricultural products to the market. The project aims to demonstrate how new technology can be adopted in sustainable way for poverty reduction."

"The project is based on unique technology. The remote monitoring system using SIM metering technology has been implemented in order to measure the distribution of water for domestic and irrigation needs. The use of SIM card enables communities to maintain data of water supply and consumption at their end," he added.

“In a bid to make the project sustainable, a village based organisation has been established in each village based on community. As well as, community members are given training on operation and maintenance of  Hydram technology”, said Baburam Paudel, senior technical manager of Renewable World, the project implementing partner.

Ncell had launched the initiative in 2014 under the Water for Agricultural Livelihood Project in collaboration with Renewable World. The technical partners of the project are Centre for Rural Technology and Andhikhola Community Development Centre.
