July 22: After peaking on Tuesday (July 20), the stock market witnessed a drop on Wednesday and Thursday. Following the political uncertainty in the country and the government’s decision to reduce the commission of brokers, the mood of investors was rather sober on Thursday, July 21 compared to the rage of earlier days. On Thursday, the transaction decreased by 30 percent than Wednesday dropping from Rs 2.12 billion to 1.48 billion. The share transaction had amounted more than Rs 2.14 billion on Tuesday.

Following the delay in implementing the decision on commission of brokers that was announced Wednesday, the share transaction lowered on Thursday. “Investors were reluctant to buy share on Thursday,” said Anjan Raj Poudyal, immediate past president of Stock Brokers Association of Nepal. According to him, the delay has affected the transaction as investors want to buy the shares in minimum possible prices.  He added that the strictness imposed by current monetary policy on share evaluation has affected the investors who invest taking loan in share collateral which has been reflected in the market.

According to SEBON’s Executive Director Niraj Giri, investors might be holding back their investments with ‘wait and see’ policy as waiting few time will allow them to evaluate final financial reports of listed companies of last fiscal year and expecting the decrease in commission of brokers. Listed companies have already started to publish the final reports of the last FY. “In the other hand, investors might be confused about investing in the market during the period of instability,” added Giri.

Although the Ministry of Finance had decided to decrease the broker commission averaging 40 percent, SEBON has forwarded circulars to implement the policy from Sunday, 24 July. According to Poudyal, brokers are ready to implement the directive from regulatory authority from Sunday onwards. We are engaged in the preparation and will start to work from that day by working even on Saturday,” added Poudyal.
