June 19: Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) is apparently delaying the laying of optical fibres in the mid-Hill Highway. The NTA has carried out very little progress regarding the project so far. Additionally, its decision to expand the deadline has further delayed the project.

The Development Committee of legislature-parliament had directed the government to speed up the project within 18 months. NTA, however, is preparing to make three years contract without being able to select the service provider. Apart from this, the telecom regulator has not finalised an agreement with Nepal telecom (NT) regarding laying of optical fibre in the hill-way east of Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, NTA is preparing to redemand the proposal from NT that has submitted its proposal twice before. The agreement between NTA and NT was postponed due to the modification in the regulator’s plans.

According to sources at the NTA, the plan to expand the mid-hill fibre network to connect urban areas and district headquarters has been modified. According to them, the modified plan tends to increases both cost and length of the proposed fibre network. The network is being developed as the national backbone of telecommunication infrastructure that will further ease and increase efficiency of internet and telephone services of the nation.

Lately, NTA has been preparing to lay optical fibre on the basis of provincial structure. As per the plan, province number one and three will be the eastern section whereas; province number four and five will be the mid-section. However, NTA is yet to decide whether to divide province number six and seven in the western section or keep the units as a single section.

According to NTA, it will take four to five years complete the lay optical fibre throughout east to west in the mid-Hill Highway.
