Due to the short of production in compare to demand along with lack of diversity in Nepali culinary has attributed rise in rice import, says Agriculture Development Ministry. The ministry points out the possibility of reduction in rice import if the countrymen consume food items that are produced in Nepal. The Ministry has implemented various programs on rice production to reduce rice import. “However, as the agriculture in the country is dependent on climate, the agricultural production could not be increased as aspire,” says Shanker Sapkota, Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry.

Increase in rice import can be attributed to the devastating earthquake of last year followed by the border blockade and decrease in rice production by 10.2 percent. “Nevertheless, the country is importing rice during the previous few years despite having surplus food items,” adds Sapkota.

“Nepalis need to change the eating habit in order to reduce the rice import. Due to the rice craving habit, domestic currency is fleeing to foreign land and increase dependency,” says Sapkota.
