May 30: A two day international conference on “Sustainable Agricultural Growth in Nepal: Challenges, Opportunities and Options” has started in Kathmandu on Sunday.

The conference is jointly organised by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS) and Nepal Economic Association (NEA).

Minister for Agricultural Development Haribol Gajurel, addressing the inaugural session of the conference said that investment of donor agencies do not meet the actual need of the agriculture sector of the country. On the occasion, General Director of IFPRI Shenggen Fan said that additional possibilities should be created for women and youth in agricultural sector. He said that the “3A” (Africa, Agriculture, and Adaptation) is being used for the development of agricultural sector and Asia now is in Africa’s position. At the conference it was informed that immediately after the earthquake, 80 percent of the most food insecure households lost their entire food stock and 55 percent of households overall lost at least half their food stock.

 Bishwambher Pyakuryal, Chairman of NEA  said “ the nature of food consumption is changing in Nepal. I doubt that the government would implement experts’ suggestion on uplifting the agricultural sector of the country.”

According to the organisers, the objective of the conference is to find solution of the challenges such as low productivity , high instability, immediate effect of climate change, sufficient infrastructure and shortage of investment through discussing for upcoming days. More than 100 representatives of agricultural investigators, donor agencies and private sector from Nepal, India, United States and various other countries are participating in the two days conference.
