May 1 : Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has celebrated the 60 years (Diamond Jubilee) of ascent of Mt. Manaslu and Mt. Lhotse.  “The recommendations provided by experts during the conference will be important in mitigating the effects of climate change in mountain range,” says Vidya Devi Bhandari, the President of Nepal.

On the occasion, Minoru Higeta, the only living Japanese mountaineer who had scaled Manaslu six decade ago, shared his experience of ascending the beautiful mountain. He expressed her happiness in getting the chance to be a part of the celebration.  Participants put forward beliefs to revitalize the mountaineering that has declined in recent years due to natural calamities to its previous stage.

Speaking on the occasion, Sherdhan Rai, Minister for Information’s and Communications, says,” The world is attracted to Nepal’s challenging trekking routes and mountaineering.”Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prem Kumar Rai also expressed his belief that the conclusion of the conference would be helpful in tackling the effects of climate change. Similarly, Member-Secretary of NMA Ang Tshering Sherpa said, “The diamond jubilee celebrations would provide a significant help to mountaineering in Nepal.”

The event hosted 80 Japanese mountaineers and high level officers from government of Nepal. Mount Manaslu, the 8th highest peak in the world, was first scaled in May 9, 1956 by a team led by Tosiyo Imasini of Japan and Gyangel Sherpa. Similarly, Mount Lhotse, the 4th highest, was scaled in May 18 the same year by team of France led by Ernst Riss and Fritz Luchsinger. 

 The Diamond Jubilee Celebration was jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and NMA. Minoru Higeta, the first mountaineer to summit Mount Manaslu and Junko Tabei, the first mountaineer to summit Mount Everest as well as many domestic and international climbers were honored in the program.
