April 25: The private sector has demanded a ‘bold’ budget from the government for the upcoming fiscal year for economic revival. Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) has suggested the government to bring such budget in order to revive the bed-ridden economy which had taken massive hits from last year’s devastating earthquake and the border blockade.

CNI submitted nearly three dozen suggestions on the budget of FY 2016/17 to Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel amid a program at the Finance Ministry on Sunday. Speaking at the program, Hari Bhakta Sharma, Chairman of CNI, suggested Fin Min to bring budgetary programs to promote growth in industrial production instead of import. “The upcoming budget should address the issues on establishment of Infrastructure Development Bank, establishment of autonomous Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Centre and implementation of Social Security Fund.”

Anuj Agrawal, Vice Chairman of CNI adviced the government to formulate production and employment-focused economic and fiscal policy, large infrastructure and reconstruction focused development policy.  He asked the government to include private sector and business friendly tax and revenue policy in the upcoming budget.

Similarly, CNI has submitted three dozen demands to the government. The demands include; government attention on revival of damaged small and medium industries and supply of electricity through separate transmission lines to the industries providing more than 100 employments. It has also asked the government to focus on implementing the agricultural promotion fund and allocation of at least one third budget on infrastructure sector. Likewise, it has demanded government’s approach on facilitating duty- free access to Nepali products which the developed nations provide to underdeveloped countries.

CNI has also demanded to involve the private sector on transmission and trading of electricity. Meanwhile, the private sector body has suggested minimising at least two levels of customs duty on import of raw materials.
