April 6: The government has initiated homework to set up LPG storage facilities across the country to minimize hardships due to gas shortages in the events of supply disruptions. As per the government plan, Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) is preparing to build five gas storage facilities across various locations of the country. According to concerned officials, the facilities can supply the whole country with LPG for at least 45 days. At present, only one week of demand could be met with the gas imported by the private sector.

According to Sushil Bhattarai, Acting Deputy Executive Director of NOC, feasibility study has been conducted to build storage facilities in all five development regions. “Storage units will be constructed to store 47,500 metric tons of gas,” he says.  NOC believes that the amount will meet demand of one and half months. Regular consumption of gas stands at 30,000 metric tons per month, according to NOC data.

“We are conducting feasibility study to build storage centers in different regions depending on their supply and demand trend,” says Bhattarai. He informs that Kavre’s Panchkhal will have a storage facility with 10,000 metric ton capacity. Meanwhile, NOC is searching suitable locations in Jhapa, Janakpur, Trisuli, Nepalgunj. It has estimated to cost nearly Rs 23 billion on construction of the five storage depots. The cost does not include the expenses for acquisition of lands for the purpose. According to officials, a total of 95 bigah land is necessary to construct the projects.

NOC informed that homework regarding the budgeting is being carried to build the fuel depots. “Cooking gas is an important item for us. The recurring crisis has made us realize importance of storage facilities,” Bhattarai mentions.  Earlier, NOC had declared to build storage facilities in each proposed seven provinces to store petrol, diesel, kerosene, aviation fuel enough to meet three months of demand.
