September 10: Number of Internet users in Nepal registered a decline during the month period after the April earthquake, data from Nepal Telecom Authority shows.

According to NTA , lesser number of people used the internet in the month of Jestha (mid May-mid  June) than in the previous month (Baisakh ). This is an anomaly as the number has been increasing every month for the last few years, officials say.

According to authority, as of mid April, there were 11.48 million Internet users in Nepal. However, the figure declined by 48 thousand the following month.
Digamber Jha Chairman of NTA said, “The figures showed a 10 to 15 percent decline in the number of users. We can’t believe this."

According to NTA  Deputy Director Deepesh  Acharya ,the decline could be attributed Ncell’s submission of erroneous data. According to Ncell, number of internet users using its service in first week of April was 4.91  million, and in the next month (Jestha) it was 4.7 million.

Deputy Director Deepesh Acharya said, such fluctuation in the numbers in a short span of time was not expected. However, Ncell’s communication expert Milan Mani Sharma said that due to the earthquake (and Ncell’s bonus scheme) in April, the number of Internet users increased, and in the next month it decreased because the scheme was stopped.
