The country’s much-maligned tourist visa processing system will be completely overhauled, in an effort to allow the country to achieve a greater share of global visitor arrivals. Announcing the decision in Delhi late on Wednesday, planning minister Rajiv Shukla told reporters; “We have decided to extend the visa-on-arrival facility to tourists from 180 nations.” This marks a major upgrade from the an original plan mooted in October last year, which suggested the VOA scheme could be offered to 40 countries, including the UK, US, France, Germany, China, Russia, Brazil, Australia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Under the expanded plan however, tourists from almost every nation on Earth will be able to apply for VOA to India. The only major exceptions are Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Iraq, which have been omitted on security grounds. Bangladesh is among the countries included. The study reveals that more than half of global respondents do not want to make a booking commitment until they read reviews and find out what other travellers thought about the property. According to the study, respondents turn to TripAdvisor on a regular basis. Twenty nine percent visit the site several times a month, 12 percent say they check the site at least once a week and 26 percent regularly use the site more than once a week. Overall, this means that 67 percent of respondents check TripAdvisor a few times a month or more. More than 80 percent say the site’s reviews help them feel more confident in their travel decisions, and help them to have a better trip. Of those polled, 93 percent of respondents feel that a hotel stay is very important to the overall trip experience. Under the headline ‘Discover the hidden secrets of Botswana’, the ad exposes Botswana’s use of glossy and contrived images of Bushmen to attract tourists, while at the same time using violence and torture to deport the Bushmen from their ancestral land in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The ad is being published in five languages (English, French, German, Spanish and Italian) and will be placed in luxury and travel magazines and newspapers worldwide. The first ad has appeared in the March issue of Wired Magazine. Botswana’s government has been persecuting its first people for decades in an attempt to drive them from their land. Banned from hunting, and forced to apply for permits to enter the reserve, they are now being pushed to the brink of extinction. The ad urges tourists to join Survival’s boycott and not go to Botswana until the Bushmen are allowed to live on their land in peace.
