Far West is going to get its first ever medical college. This government owned medical college will be established at Geta VDC of Kailali district, Under Secretary at Ministry of Education (MOE), Dr Tulsi Thapaliya informed.  The government had allotted a total of Rs 10 million for implementing this project in the fiscal year 2007/08. Similarly, the government has allocated 120 million rupees in the next fiscal year for the Far Western University and the medical college projects. Dr. Bhim Singh Tingkari, Executive Director of Geta Medical College Development Committee said that the project could not be implemented due to government's inability to allocate the total approximate budget of Rs 5 billion for the project.

Dr. Tingkri said that the new committee formed in 2012 under the chairmanship of Chetraj Panta had started working on the project with an objective of opening the medical college within three years for public service. He said that land needed for the medical college has been acquired and environmental impact study of the project is underway. He further added that "Building Design Authority" has been assigned with the responsibility to prepare the master plan including project implementation and cost and time frame analysis. Dr. Tingkri said that the master plan will be ready by January and additional work will be carried out accordingly.

The dedication shown by the new committee has brought hopes in the local people. This fiscal year the government has allocated 45 million rupees for this project. The budget has been utilized in conducting environmental impact assessment, in constructing fences around the project site and in preparing the master plan. However, if the project is to complete in time, the government should ensure that adequate budget is allocated in the coming fiscal year, Dr. Tingkri said.

Back at the ministry, Under Secretary Thapaliya said that this medical college project is in government's priority list and expressed confidence that it will receive adequate attention in the coming fiscal year’s budget. The ministry is aware that the Far Western Development Region is in need of a fully government owned medical college, Thapaliya said adding that the ministry will therefore provide full support in completing the project.

Depending on the availability of budget and the fulfillment of the commitment expressed by stakeholders, the project could be completed in three years, Dr. Tingkri said. The medical college has initiated process for Expression of Interest at the ministry, the ministry informed.

Guru Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham of India had taken initiation for constructing a medical college in Far Western Region, way back in 1999. Following the initiatives taken by the committee presided by him, the government had handed over 51 hectares of land for the college. However, the project remained in limbo due to budget shortages and a corresponding delay in the implementation.
