UN calls for single Silk Road visa
The UN has called for a single tourist visa for countries in Central Asia, to boost tourism development along the ancient Silk Road. At the UNESCO and UNWTO-led ‘Silk Roads Heritage Corridors Tourism Strategy Workshop’, which was held in Kazakhstan earlier this month, representatives from the UN’s tourism and heritage bodies said China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan “must work towards a single Silk Road visa” if the potential for tourism growth along the Silk Road Heritage Corridors is to be fully realised. Complicated visa systems, inefficient application processes and high fees hinder the development of the Silk Road as a tourism destination, they added. To boost tourism and conservation in the region, two World Heritage nominations for the Silk Roads Heritage Corridors in Central Asia and China have been submitted to UNESCO. (Traveldailymedia.com)

International Tourism on the Rise
Demand for international tourism remained strong throughout the first eight months of 2013, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Between January and August, the number of international tourists worldwide grew by 5 per cent, driven by strong results in Europe, Asia and the Pacific and the Middle East. UNWTO’s Panel of Experts confirms this positive trend. Its evaluation of the May-August period shows a significant improvement in confidence, while prospects for the last four months of 2013 remain upbeat. In the first eight months of the year, international tourist arrivals grew by 5 per cent to reach a record 747 million worldwide, some 38 million more than in the same period of 2012. Europe (+5 per cent) benefited the most from the growth of tourism in the first eight months of 2013, with an estimated 20 million more arrivals in the region.   (Traveldailynews.com)

TripAdvisor Launches Groundbreaking New Service TripConnect
TripAdvisor has launched its innovative TripConnect service. The self-service platform, a first for the hospitality sector, allows TripAdvisor Business Listings subscribers to participate in Hotel Price Comparison and to drive direct bookings from TripAdvisor to their own property’s website. Each month, over 260 million unique users visit TripAdvisor to plan travel. TripConnect will enable independent accommodation owners to bid for this traffic, an option previously only available to online travel agents and large hotel chains. These independent hotels and B&Bs will be able to add their own room rates and availability, allowing travellers to click directly through to the property’s own website to make a booking.
