World’s Highest Airport to Open in TibetThe world’s highest civilian airport will commence operations in a Tibetan prefecture in China’s Sichuan province from September 16, officials said today. Located at 4,411 metres above sea level, the airport in Daocheng Yading county, Garzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture will drastically cut the travel time between the county and the provincial capital of Chengdu from two days by bus to 65 minutes by air, according to the prefecture tourism bureau. The new airport will surpass the current record held by Bangda Airport which is also located in Tibet at 4,334 metres. It will be the sixth airport in the Himalayan region. The new airport at Daocheng will initially operate a daily route from Chengdu. The cost of a one-way ticket will be 1,600 yuan (USD 259), state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Routes connecting Daocheng with Chongqing Municipality, a southwest Chinese business hub and Maerkang County, capital of Sichuan’s Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture are expected to open before October 1. The 29th annual convention of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) kick-started on September 8 with a record 1,496 delegates in Kochi, Kerala. The convention with the theme Tourism – Innovation and Partnership was inaugurated by Kerala’s Chief Minister Oommem Chandy, along with Minister of State (IC) for Consumer Affairs in India, K V Thomas, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, K C Venugopal, Kerala’s Tourism Minister P Anil Kumar and other senior officials. In his Presidential address, Subhash Goyal, President of IATO talked about this year’s convention theme ‘Indian Tourism – Innovations and Partnerships’. “Indian Tourism needs special efforts to have visa relaxation, improved infrastructure, look for new markets like Brazil and Africa etc. Air connectivity and budget hotels are the need of the hour to make India competitive,” he said.
