In what appears to be a major shift from its previous intransigent stance to totally boycott the Constituent Assembly elections, the agitating CPN-Maoist party last week demonstrated flexibility to participate in the election process.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
CPN-Maoist, which had endorsed a strategy to disrupt the CA polls through its central committee meeting held in June 30 in Pokhara, expressed its commitment to join the election process if its demands, including the polls deferral for April, are met. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
During an all-party-meeting organized by President Dr Ram Baran Yadav at the Presidential Palace Shital Niwas last Friday, the poll-opposing party CPN-Maoist floated its four-point proposal as a way-out to the current political impasse. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The four-point proposal comprises convening a Round-Table-Conference (RTC) to make decisions on the basis of consensus, dissolution of the Khil Raj Regmi-led government to form all-party-government, or Regmi’s resignation from the post of Chief Justice, and deferring CA polls for four months. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Though the parties representing the High Level Political Committee rejected outright the CPN-Maoist call for deferring polls, they have termed the proposal as positive and as an indication of the latter’s willingness to come on board the election process. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
UCPN (Maoist) leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha informed the media that the CPN-Maoist chairperson Mohan Baidya requested President Yadav and leaders of other parties to not cast any doubt over his party’s intentions to contest in the CA polls. “We are ready to join the poll process,” Shrestha quoted Baidya as saying. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Emerging from the meeting, coordinator of the HLPC and president of the Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala told the media: “Discussions are heading towards a positive direction, but the election cannot be postponed to April as demanded by the CPN-Maoist.”</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Echoing the views of HLPC coordinator Koirala, CPN (UML) Chairman Jhalnath Khanal said, “Among four, only two proposals of the CPN-Maoist are positive.” </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
CPN-Maoist Secretary Dev Gurung said that other parties have taken positively to the proposal floated by his party.</div>

</div>
