Infection of Nairobi Fly Reported with the Onset of Monson

July 10: Two persons infected by poisonous Nairobi fly are receiving treatment at Civil Hospital in Kathmandu.
The patients have shown severe skin infections caused due to contact with the acid released by the fly, said Dr Gokarna Dahal, chief of the Vector Borne Disease Control Section under the Epidemiology and Infectious Disease Control Division.
Three to four infection cases were reported in the country last year too, he said, adding that it has now been reported in eastern Nepal and Kanchanpur district.
"The infection has been confirmed in the country. It is non-communicable and does not turn into a pandemic", he added.

According to Dr Dahal, the fly seems to have reproduced in Nepal instead of migrating from foreign countries.
Although the infection has been reported, there is no need to panic, opined Dr Dahal.
The fly releases poisonous acid when it comes in contact with the human body, causing skin rashes and itchy skin, he stated.
Dahal further said "Most of the infected people get recovered without any medical treatment. One needs treatment when the problem persists." -- RSS
