President of Indian National Congress Sonia Gandhi has underlined the need for unity among democratic forces to end Nepal’s transitional period as soon as possible through CA elections, according to Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Aide Rajan Kumar Bhattarai.

At a meeting with senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal of the CPN (UML) at 7, Race Course in New Delhi on Wednesday, Gandhi said such unity would also steer Nepal towards a peaceful, democratic and prosperous future.

Leader Nepal also apprised Gandhi about the consensus among parties to hold the CA polls in order to institutionalise the achievements of the Peoples’ Movement of 2006. Chief of Foreign Affairs of Congress (I) Dr Karan Singh, UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokhrel, and Nepal’s foreign affairs aide Bhattarai were also present in the meeting. Former PM Nepal also expressed his grief over recent casualties caused by flood in the state of Uttarakhand.

Likewise, Nepal had also met Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, among other leaders during his trip.

Earlier, Congress President Gandhi had met with Nepali Congress senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba in June. However, citing her busy schedule, Gandhi did not meet UCPN (Maoist) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal while he was at India in April.
