January 3: The production of paddy, which is the major crop produced in Nepal, has declined by 8.74 percent this year. The paddy production has decreased due to the damage caused by the unseasonal rainfall as well as strong winds across the country from October 17 to 20.

Organising a press conference on Sunday, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development informed that paddy production has declined this year. As per the data collected by the ministry from across the country, the production of paddy in the current fiscal year has been found to be the lowest in the last five years.

According to the data provided by the Ministry, 5.62 million metric tons of paddy was produced in 1.47 million hectares of land in the Fiscal Year 2077/78. In the current fiscal year, 5.13 million metric tons of paddy has already been produced in the same area. This is 8.74 percent less than the previous year.

Earlier, in FY 2074/75, 5.15 million metric tons of paddy was produced. Likewise, the production of paddy in FY 2075/76 was 5.61 million metric tons and 5.55 million metric tons in FY 2076/77.

Spokesperson at the ministry Prakash Kumar Sanjel said that although the area of paddy production has increased by about 4,000 hectares as compared to last FY, productivity has also declined by 9.09 percent due to unseasonal rains and has remained at 3.47 metric tons per hectare.

According to him, the overall national paddy production has declined due to heavy losses in Kailali, Kanchanpur, Bardiya, Banke and Kapilvastu districts of the Far-western and Lumbini province due to unseasonal rains. Paddy production in the Far western Province has declined by 31.49 percent and in Lumbini Province by 18.38 percent.

The statistics of paddy production shows that the paddy production in other provinces except Gandaki has remained negative as compared to last year.
