November 8: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Pampha Bhusal on Sunday said that Nepal has already started exporting electricity to India.

Speaking with media persons, Minister Bhusal said this type of trade is one of its kind in the entire South Asian region.

She also shared that the discussions with Bangladesh for electricity trade is moving forward in a positive manner.

Minister Bhusal said that the domestic consumption of electricity should be increased as hydropower generation is gradually increasing in the country. She also added that if the electricity trade continues to improve, it would help in minimizing the trade deficit as well.

“We have a gradual increase in hydropower generation and there is a need to increase the domestic consumption as well,” said Minister Bhusal.

Minister Bhusal said that the country’s trade deficit would be reduced if the energy including the LP gas used in kitchens could be replaced by electricity. She also requested the energy consuming industries to come up with new ideas, saying that the industries can now be given as much electricity as they need.

Stating that the electricity tariff has been reduced for internal consumption, she said that a policy will be introduced to encourage electric vehicles while purchasing vehicles.
