November 3: Minister for Energy, Water resources and irrigation, Pampha Bhusal has pledged to lower the customs duty on the import of electric vehicles. She said that discussions are being held to lower the customs duty.

Minister Bhusal made such statement while addressing the Silver Jubilee of the Alternative Energy Promotion Center on Tuesday, November 2.

“The government benefits from the customs duty of electric vehicles as well. But increasing the use of electric vehicles and increasing the consumption of electricity and displacing the petroleum vehicles seems to be more beneficial. Therefore, the customs duty on electric vehicles should be lowered and usage of petroleum vehicles should be also gradually decreased,” said Minister Bhusal.

Bhusal added that the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) used for cooking should be completely displaced as well. She said, “Electricity should replace the energies used in all sectors. To do so, the LPG in the kitchen should be replaced by induction stove as the first step.”

Minister Bhusal also announced that electricity will be provided free of cost to the irrigation sector. She said that the government aims to provide electricity facilities to all Nepali citizens within a period of two years. She expressed that no citizen should be deprived of access to modern energy. According to the minister, such goal would be achieved by providing electricity facilities through alternative energy in places where the central transmission line cannot be reached.

Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Devendra Karki said that it has been possible to provide energy to people living in remote areas of the country via alternative energy. On the occasion, British Ambassador to Nepal, Nicola Pollitt said that Nepal has made significant progress in the development and promotion of renewable energy.

The executive director of the center, Dr Madhusudan Adhikari informed that around 3.5 million households have benefited from renewable energy through the center in a period of 25 years.

President of the Confederation of Renewable Energy of Nepal, Guna Raj Dhakal said that the private sector has made a great contribution to the development and expansion of alternative energy in Nepal.
