October 18: The Social Security Fund (SSF) has started providing medical treatment facility to the contributors upon showing their identity cards at few select hospitals.
Kapil Mani Gyawali, executive director of the fund, said that the facility could be availed from three hospitals at the initial stage even though the fund has signed MoUs with more than 100 hospitals to provide such facility.
Contributors can avail the medical treatment from National Orthopedic Hospital in Jorpati, Kathmandu, Chitwan’s Old Medical College, and the Scheer Memorial Hospital in Banepa. The contributors do not have to come to SSF office and submit a bill to claim medical expenses incurred at the three hospitals.
Gyawali said that the program is ready to be implemented in all the hospitals with whom they have signed MOU within a month and a half. "We are discussing with all the hospitals. Soon, there will be an arrangement to get treatment from more than 100 hospitals based on identity cards," he said. Officials of the fund claim that the contributors can easily get treatment from the hospitals within the prescribed limits.
SSF spokesperson, Vivek Panthi, said that discussions are underway in the second phase to provide this facility to the contributors at TU Teaching Hospitals, Maharajgunj, Ganga Lal Hospital, and Bir Hospital. He said that this facility is being promoted with special priority in all the states.
According to the latest statistics, the Social Security Fund has signed MoUs with 19 hospitals in Province 1, 16 in Province 2, 21 in Bagmati Province, 8 in Gandaki Province, 14 in Lumbini Province, 10 in Province 6, and 17 in Sudur Paschim Province.
Although the signing of new MoUs have slowed down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, SSF officials say they will now move forward at a faster pace. Lately, the Social Security Fund has been trying to remove various obstacles by revising the operation procedure brought in the first phase of the contribution-based social security fund.
The second amendment has clarified conflicting and ambiguous provisions regarding retirement benefits. Earlier, there was confusion that the contributors could not receive any amount before the retirement age of 60. The provision has been amended.
According to the SSF officials, the previous provision of contributors not getting any benefit if they leave the work has also been revised.
