August 18: The destruction of roads and bridges due to floods and landslides during this year's monsoon has caused an estimated loss of around Rs 3 billion. According to the preliminary data of the Department of Roads, the damage to roads and bridges has been estimated at Rs 2.20 billion and Rs 800 million, respectively.

During the period from mid-June to mid-July, various road sections and 26 bridges across the country were partially or completely damaged. Spokesperson of the department, Shiva Prasad Nepal said that roads and bridges were severely damaged due to floods and landslides this year. According to Nepal, the department is working to repair the roads in the places where there urgent need to resume transportation.

However, he said that it would take time to rebuild the roads and bridges which have received substantial damages. The department has been demanding a separate budget for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads and bridges damaged by the floods and landslides, but no arrangement has been made.

Nepal said that the department has been constructing such damaged structures from the regular budget and the budget coming for periodic maintenance. At present, the department has provided Rs 110 million to various road division offices. The department has informed that this budget has been made available for emergency maintenance. The budget is available to temporarily operate the roads that need to be operated immediately and to build the bridges in the same way.

According to the department, roads in 169 places across the country have been damaged so far. Of them, nine road sections have been blocked and the number of roads operating one-way is 104. There are 56 roads operating through both lanes. Various road sections in Manang, Sindhupalchowk, Lamjung, Nuwakot and Rasuwa are still blocked.

Manang is the district where most of the roads have been blocked due to floods and landslides. Six places in the district are blocked so far. The floods and landslides have washed away Bailey bridge and road tracks.

Due to the floods and landslides that have damaged road sections of various highways, vehicles are now operating unilaterally in most places. The flood-damaged roads in Palpa, Bajura, Baitadi and other places have been operating unilaterally.
