August 10: Shyam Sundar Lal Kakshapati, a prominent restaurateur and the founder of the Nanglo Restaurant, has passed away after his long battle with cancer. He was 69.

Kakshapati breathed his last on Monday (August 9) while undergoing treatment in Bangkok, according to the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN). He had been suffering from oral cancer since a long time

Late Kakshapati was admitted to Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok two months ago, according to his family sources.

Born in 2009 BS in Palpa to father Ram Lal Kakshapati and mother Krishna Badan Kakshapati, the late Kakshapati started his business in 1973 from Cafe Day Park in Ratna Park, Kathmandu. Kaksapati, who was one of the frontrunners of the modern restaurant business in the country, played a leading role in the promotion of the restaurant business and establishing the café culture in Nepal.

He also established Shyams One Tree Restaurant in Durbar Marg.

Kakshapati started Nanglo Restaurant along with his younger brother Gopal Sundar Lal Kakshapati in 1976. Likewise, he also started the Bakery cafe in 1997 at New Baneshwor and later invested in River Side Spring Resort in Kurintar. He also provided employment to differently abled people in various outlets of Bakery Café.

He also was the director of Shubhatara School in Sanepa. 

Kakshapati, also the former president of the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) is the founding president of REBAN.

HAN in a statement released on Tuesday has paid heartfelt tribute to Kakshapati and expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

He was associated with HAN since the foundation of the association and was its president from 2012 to 2014. He was conferred the title of Prabal Janasewa Shri Manpadavi by the Government of Nepal. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
