August 10: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, elected with the backing of the five-party alliance, has started revoking the decisions taken by the previous government.

Revoking the decisions taken by the erstwhile government led by KP Sharma Oli, the current government headed by Deuba has dissolved the Land-related Problem Solving Commission, banned the export of stone, pebbles and sand from Chure range and halted the construction of cable car from mining area to the border.

The Oli-led government had formed a commission to resolve the problems of the landless people. However, the Deuba government has overturned the decision.

Although this government is trying to reverse the decisions of the previous government, it seems that the Supreme Court is preventing the government from implementing its decisions. The Supreme Court has temporarily prevented the government from scrapping the commission formed to resolve land issues.

A single bench of Supreme Court Justice Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada on Monday stayed the government's decision while hearing a petition filed by the commission's chairperson Devi Prasad Gyawali. The Supreme Court has decided to conduct further hearing on the petition on August 17.

The Supreme Court has summoned both the parties for hearing on August 17. It will be decided whether to issue an interim order after hearing the discussions of both the parties. The government's decision to dismiss the commission will not be implemented for the time being.   The Land-Related Problem Solving Commission will be able to function until the Supreme Court decides whether to issue the interim order.

The Supreme Court has stated not to tamper with the records related to the work of the Commission, or make any changes to physical resources and other management-related matters.

The current Deuba-led government was formed with the support of the five-party alliance.  The coalition has reached an understanding to revoke the previous government’s decisions. On the basis of the same understanding, the government had stated to form a new mechanism to resolve the problems of landless squatters after dissolving the current commission in line with its common minimum programme.

Similarly, the government has announced to reverse the decisions taken by the previous government regarding the release of budget through ordinance.

The Deuba-led government has also revoked ambassadorial appointments without a hearing.

Outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has expressed dissatisfaction over the Deuba government’s move to roll back the programs brought by his government.
