May 12: Farmers have started making arrangements to acquire paddy seeds with the approaching paddy plantation season. Fearing that the seeds would not be available on time due to the prohibitory order, they have started to search for paddy seeds well ahead of the plantation season.

Farmers have started to buy paddy seeds from various cooperatives, seed centres, agro-vets, and other places. The government-owned Agriculture Inputs Company Limited has also started distributing paddy seeds to farmers from Kathmandu, Bhairahawa, Dhangadhi, Nepalgunj, Birgunj, and Hetauda. Out of its stock of 800 metric tons of paddy seeds, the company has so far distributed 500 metric tons of seeds.
Around 70,000 metric tons of paddy seeds are required annually for a total of 1.35 million hectares of arable land in Nepal. Private companies and entrepreneurs supply a large amount of seed. It is estimated that Nepali companies produce 10,000 metric tons of paddy seeds annually.
Seeds of local rice species such as Savitri, Sonamansuli, Makwanpur, and Basmati are produced in Nepal while hybrid seeds are imported from India and China. Nepal imports about 68 varieties of hybrid rice seeds from abroad annually.

According to Chhotelal Prasad Lohar, central vice president of the Seed Entrepreneurs' Association, seed traders of Nepal started to import paddy seeds from India about two weeks ago to provide them to the farmers on time amid the pandemic.
According to him, the farmers of Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Chitwan, Siraha, Saptari, and other districts are demanding seeds at present. "Farmers were not able to get seeds on time due to the lockdown last year. Therefore, the farmers have started to make arrangements for seeds quite early this year to avoid such problems,” he said.
Mitra Raj Dawadi, the outgoing president of the Seed Producers' Association, said that the farmers are also worried as Nepali seed companies have produced fewer seeds this year than last year. According to him, 8,000 metric tons of seeds were produced last year, while 10,000 metric tons were produced the previous year. Seed production has declined in Nepal due to damage to caused by certain crop diseases.
