January 5: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has installed an additional transformer of 315 MVA capacity at its Dhalkebar substation, the largest substation in the country. NEA installed the transformer to upgrade the substation.

The newly added transformer has been brought into operation from Monday, January 4. Now the total capacity of the transformers of the substation is 635 MVA. Earlier, the substation had 2 transformers of 220 kV and 132 kV with a total capacity of 320 MVA. NEA spokesperson Madan Timsina informed that work is also underway to add another transformer at the substation.

With the addition of transformers, an additional 100 MW of electricity can be imported from India. Currently, 250 MW of electricity can be imported through the substation.

Electricity is being imported to the substation through Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line.

A power purchase agreement (PPA) was signed with NTPC Vidyut Nigam Limited (NVVN) of India to bring electricity using the transmission line.

According to the PPA, NEA can import 250 MW of electricity from July to November and 350 MW from December to April through the same transmission line.
